Never had an interest in this game, and then the fateful day of losing a bet with a coworker arrived. The terms being I had to play this game with a guy on the cover who looks like a knock of Commander Shepard from another game I could care less about. If it wasn’t for that stupid bet, I wouldn’t have found my prime candidate for 2009’s Game of the Year.
I like sandbox games for the most part, and InFAMOUS is just exactly that. I enjoy the freedom of choosing mission upon mission based off my own preferences and willingness to get involved in such sequences. However, very few games have the ability of combining such a format with an amazing story line. That’s what got me hooked straight from the get go. The game opens up with a massive explosion in Empire City (original name…) and suddenly your controlled character, Cole, has the ability to static shock people to death at his will. Now the game takes you through the motions of trying to find out just exactly what happened to you and your fellow citizens, all the while you’re constantly upgrading your powers throughout the game. It’s a classic gaming concept that usually I’d sit here and tear apart for its unoriginality, but it’s how developers Sucker Punch tell the story that makes this game stand out alone and even raise the bar.
Some games have the unfortunate knack of just throwing everything at you at once and just allowing you to complete mission after mission to satisfy the needs and wants of the games plot. However, InFAMOUS is very subtle in letting you in on the thick of the plot and forces you to find out for yourself. This tactic left me begging for more at times, salivating at the lips as I strained to game on further and further into Empire City to learn of its sadistic roots. I would pick up the controller intending to play for a little bit, maybe half hour max, and suddenly I just missed my 3:50pm accounting exam in downtown Providence. Only Bioshock has been the only other gaming title to captivate me this way, and the mere fact that halfway through the game I was readying myself to play it again.
Like predecessors such as Fable, Bioshock and Mass Effect and other titles that give you the “moral” edge of how to approach your gaming, InFAMOUS was the exact same way. You can either become a hero in the eyes of the Empire City citizens by reviving the fallen with your electrical abilities or become, as the title claims, infamous for your dastardly deeds. First time through, I always choose good guy in any scenario, just in case the big man upstairs is watching me, I want to prove I’m good at heart. Then I go back and kill the innocent and set fire the world!
From storyline, to unique characters and even the magnificent way Cole scales a building with agility and ease, InFAMOUS has much more to offer than just a quick scan at the rental shelves. People ask me for PS3 advice on games and what’s “good” in the world of Sony, and InFAMOUS has definitely claimed its stake in the annex of top games to be played on this console. If you haven’t picked it up yet, I highly recommend it, especially with a dropping price in the market. Worth every penny you have.
The inFamous games are an important part of PlayStation history, but the series is in limbo and playing older entries isn't exactly easy.
Would like remasters of 1 and 2. I enjoyed them much more than Second Son.
1 & 2 had more of an emphasis on climbing and the traversal requires a bit more effort in a good way. It was rewarding. Second Son made climbing mostly obsolete so they put little effort into it. The traversal was just great in inFamous 1 & 2. There's a reason Sunset Overdrive copied and improved upon the induction grind mechanic.
Reminds me of how I felt about the decline of parkour and the well designed tombs (basically Prince Of Persia levels) that we saw in the Assassin's Creed games.
The story and atmosphere were also much better in 1 & 2.
Electricity is just a brilliant superpower for an open world city. It perfectly fits just like webslinging does in New York and it has many applications.
Wouldn't the onus be on the consumers? If they bought the Infamous games, then we'd have more games from that series.
I would love to see a new game but a feel that would get a response similar to Saints Row.
Loved all 3 of them. I couldn't get on with the vampire spin off though. Wish they didn't move away from cole but I didn't mind the other character.
Nixxes' Remaster focus could set the stage to resurrect many obscure titles like the karma-centered, superpower-fueled sandbox of Infamous.
Infamous remaster? How about an Infamous re-Boot! This is one game that doesn't need a remaster, it needs either a proper equal of a reboot of the original. And since Sony is currently in development with Marvel, i can totally see them having guest marvel characters to appear in Cole's world.
I'd like a Killzone 2 Remaster.
Keep the visuals style as is ... just improve the LoD and the resolution
There is a lot of the PS3 era that I would love to see ported/remastered. But, unfortunately, they are probably not commercially viable and I have no idea who owns the rights currently. Stuff like Sire: Blood Curse, White Knight Chronicles, Tokyo Jungle, Folklore, etc.
Infamous on the other hand was never a series that I found good or interesting. Especially when compared with other contemporaries like Prototype. But, given how bare the subgenre is right now, I would dig a remaster.
Infamous, Resistance, and killzine are so ripe for a remaster, I wish Sony would make it happen.
From Xfire: "For a company with a three-decade-long history in gaming, Sony has done a crappy job at preserving its legacy. "
All the mgs games, all the ape escapes, silent hill 1-4, croc 1 and 2, legend of dragoon, tekken 3,tenshu, bushido blade, vagrant story, okami, ico, crash bash, gt4.
Thats just off the top of my head that i would play immediately, still so many more though that id love.
Folklore. It was such a unique and beautiful game. Great soundtrack. I still have my PS3 copy
Infamous 1 & 2 probably will get remaster for PS5/4 at some point as for the others in that article idk
Good Score, I thought this game was a little underrated myself. As I played through it I didn't find myself complaining about anything.
I loved this game so much, was hooooooked. It was always, "ok...I just do one more mission...one more, ok really, just one more"
best sandbox ive ever played. Sequal please. Good cole should continue the story.
