User Review : Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Ups
  • Gives a great GTA IV rendition in 2D{Minigames are great
Downs
  • People not comfortable with 2D wont like it{Story is disappointing

Doesnt live up to the hype but turns out to be a good game

Grand Theft Auto is a series which everyone has definitey heard of, if not played it, Rockstars long running criminal franchise has been a favorite among critics and gamers. The series has progressed from 2D to 3D and changed it styles of yet, but not here. GTA Chinatown Wars goes back to the Franchises roots by giving the gamers an oppurtunity to re-experience the classic in the latest generation. Before being released it was wondered whether the game would be good seeing that everyone now are used to the 3rd person view gameplay. Chinatown Wars although not being an awe inspiring game, does enough to silence the previous doubters but the extra hype, which the game is now being surrounded by, shouldnt be believed.

The Game has the traditional GTA Story of a criminal in the lower ranks rises gradually while the plot matures slowly. Players will play as Huang Lee, a rich and arrogant thug whose father has just been killed and now has to carry on the family work. Huang has to do the usual GTA errands given by multiple crime bosses, although the concept of the story is the same, this has to be the worst storyline of the series so far. The Characters are all very uninteresting with the same attitude basically always taunting Huang for no real reason. There are just 2 types of attitude in them, either some characters are very angry and bossy all the time while the others are cocky, pervish and
cowardly. The story is one of the lower points of the game and so its better of not to have many expectations as it will get uninteresting after some time.

Chinatown Wars utilizes the top down rather than the standard third person view gameplay, it may have some getting used to at first, for instance knowing when to turn around the car, or going through the city without any mishaps. There are the usual weapons in the game, to view and choose them the Select Button has to tapped which then displays the inventory. Missions are almost always out in the environment and only on occasion do they take place inside a building. There is an easier way to go aroung the city by calling a taxi which drops Huang off to the desired location. To make some money, drug dealings play an essential role by buying and selling them regularly to make profits consistently. Huang is summoned to his missions by recieving emails from his bosses, while latest drug dealing alerts are also recieved this way. Fending off Police and the Wanted level has been enhanced now, to reduce the wanting level police cars have to smashed which crosses of the stars but the more stars attained the more cars have to be crashed.Cars cant be hijacked automatically, to do so minigames have to be played which display hotwiring the car, other minigames use much of the same format where the analog has to be pointed the way it is required or numbers have to be dialled in.

Seeing that the game is in 2D format, people dont talk in cutscenes, only the subtitles are displayed but the in game sound is great. The radio songs are good as well as the normal things like shooting, driving cars or killing people. It isnt your average GTA Game if there wasnt messing aroung in the city, so there are a lot of minigames to played. Huang can do some work for random people on the street like taking a girl on a date or planting a bug on a cheating wifes car, buying lottery tickets to get rewards or drawing tattoes to earn extra money.

Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars gives a 2D presentation of GTA IV but is very good game in its own right. Rockstar has produced another worthy title in the GTA series although it may not bring in fresh fans it is sure to please its long loyal fans and is a must have for all PSP owners, old and new alike but a tip for all, dont believe the whole hype or this good game just might end up being a dissapointment.

@Snookies12

Worth every $ and some more ;)

Also Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable $8.00

HammadTheBeast3407d ago (Edited 3407d ago )

Oh man that game was amazing. I was thinking of replaying it. Anyone know how much of the game was left after beating the Heart boss?

Kal-V33407d ago

why in the would would you get disagrees? lol

Eidolon3407d ago (Edited 3407d ago )

Because this is the internet. Also, Persona and games like it are not everyone's cup of tea.
I'd be into it, but I haven't played the other Personas or even a Shin Megami game, I'm in the middle(but stopped because of stuff and other games) of Devil Survivor.

Muzikguy3407d ago

I just might do that thanks for the advice! :)

Heyxyz3407d ago

Isn't that just common knowledge!?!?!?!

Letthewookiewin3407d ago

That's awesome, I'd still buy it for 40$. Fantastic game.

Xof3407d ago

I'd totally buy another copy of three if Sony gave us Steam-like gift inventories.

scark923406d ago

That feature would be fantastic, I am sure they missing out such a feature.

Ozmoses3407d ago

I snatched up DA: Origins.. I've been hooked on Inquistion so I wanna start at the beginning.

The DLC is still rather expensive tho. $19.99 for The Awakening on PSN. I should of just went to see if GS had the Ultimate Edition new or pre-owned but I couldn't pass up $5 for a digital copy.

the_dark_one3407d ago

Is europe getting the same? Sure hope so

Yi-Long3407d ago

I hope so, but I doubt we'll get sales of the same proportion, price-wise. Usually we have to pay quite a lot more than US-gamers.

For example, I believe they already had Tomb Raider for sale for only 15$ a few months ago, while the cheapest sale we've seen for Tomb Raider in our EU PS Store was 20 euro, 1-2 weeks ago.

Eonjay3407d ago

Another massive sales. Some really good deals in this one.

NegativeCreep4273407d ago (Edited 3407d ago )

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver!!! It is now time to dust off that gem of a game! I haven't played that game since I rented it from Blockbuster Video way back when it first came out.

*Sobs* Good Old Middle-School Memories...

Muzikguy3407d ago

That was one of my favorite PS1 games! I tend to forget about it because of all the gems during that time, but it was such an awesome game! The game just had such a great feel to it and I haven't seen it since

Monduu3407d ago

The dreamcast version had even better graphics :)

_FantasmA_3407d ago

Easily in my top 10 games of all time. So many good memories. I've never beat the game but I've started it from the beginning like 10 times because I've played it on my PS1, PS3, PS2, PSV, PSP, and PS One.

spacedelete3407d ago

a better way of celebrating 20th anniversary would be giving us a PS1 and 2 emulator. even if its download only just give us. so many classic games fading into history.

Shineon3407d ago

I played that game so much as a teen.I had it on both ps one and Sega dreamcast!

nitus103407d ago

I preferred the original "Legacy of Kain" however it did have one annoying feature and that IMHO was the loading times when you opened doors and there were allot of doors.

This is not to say "Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver" was bad IMHO it was an excellent game and IMO well worth the purchase, however I preferred the original over the sequel.

ab5olut10n3407d ago

Agreed. I still have my original copy. No lid on the case, no instruction manual, and it looks like crap on my TV but still....amazing amazing game.

We Forgot One Of The Greatest Grand Theft Autos Ever Made

You’ve already forgotten about it.

You’ve forgotten about time spent on the train, hunched over a stylus, frantically car-jacking getaway vehicles. You’ve forgotten high speed chases, weaving in and out of traffic. Cop cars in your wake colliding bonnet first with trucks on the freeway, their sirens spluttering and wailing. You’ve forgotten how rewarding that feels.

Gamesgbkiller3896d ago

That game was really good.

I prefer it over GTA IV.

I hope R use some of the game features someday.

darren_poolies3896d ago

Agreed, it most definitely better than GTA IV, the drug running was addicting! I would actually go as far to say that it is my second favourite GTA game after SA.

Venoxn4g3896d ago

wow, you just wrote what i wanted to wrote :)) anyway good game :)

JakemanPS319943896d ago

doctorstrange3896d ago

I didn't forget about it... Stop trying to read my mind, Kotaku.

Enigma_20993896d ago
