Darksiders - Copycat or Innovative Beast?

Darksiders: Wrath of War is set in a post-apocalyptic war-torn earth. Humans are dead, and you, War, must find a way to fix what went wrong.

Without spoiling much, there are nine seals that lead the way to a rebirth of the world. You and the other horseman were supposed to "answer the call" of the seventh seal. However, it seems poor old War is framed, and so begins his epic journey to prove his innocence, and set the score right with the Destroyer, the games menacing enemy. It's basically anything any fantasy or lore fan will drool over, but is it more than just another piece of fluff to go down in the ages?

Being an action adventure game, deeply engrossed in mythology, and wielding over-the-top weapons, comparisons to God of War are all but assured. The gameplay in Darksiders is bloody, adrenaline pumping, in your face action - for the first 30 times you press circle or B to finish an enemy. The game gives you a large variety of normal attacks to use, but because the finishing moves are a strategical element, allowing moments of invulnerability, you are forced to see the same animations over and over again because each enemy model is the same. They just have more health, and the color pallete gets changed. The boss battles on the other hand, are far more interesting (with the exception of Silitha). They are puzzles in themselves, but are also more than puzzles, requiring you to think outside the box to take down your massive foes. Usually this involves using your latest gadget, but it can still be tricky.

Speaking of tricky, the game's puzzles are all reminiscent of Zelda, and are pretty elaborate at times. They won't have you sitting on the couch for hours wondering what you're supposed to do next, but they will have you scratching your head.

The game's environment reaches from decaying city streets to flowering....city streets? It's all based in one city, and it contains a variety of elements. The game's music and bosses put in each of these areas reflects the areas very well. You may find yourself wishing there was more emphasis put on this though. Darksiders does this well, but does it sparsely.

The graphics in Darksiders are not necessarily impressive, but they are pleasing. Much like the popular game World of Warcraft, it draws from a more comic book feel. The world and character models complement each other in a way that games trying to achieve photo-realism can't do. Plus, it provides a less depressing feel to the urban decay and constant ghoul-slashing. The weapon enhancements you get really change things up just because there isn't much change at all in War's decor.

All in all, Darksiders is the best experience you will get until God of War 3. It's a great game, but it pulls from the best, and innovates nowhere. Furthermore, the replay value is quite low, considering the only things you have to go back for are enhancements and one new weapon and armor set. However, a good game is a good game, and copying the best was done right with seasoned developers like THQ behind the wheel.

Wondering if I should buy this. I have always wanted to try it but there are so many good games coming out soon.

Honestly, I think you should rent it if you are looking for other games as well. You'll get about 15 hours or so of playtime out of this game.

I enjoyed the story and the characters, I think they could've done a lot more out of the graphics, and the gameplay got very repetetive at the end of it. The final puzzles before the last boss got pretty boring. But other than that a pretty good game. I would give it around 7.5.

I was more of a jerk in destroy all humans, sleeping dogs and just cause but yeah gta v has to be up there and skyrim I got bored and used to rampage.

Mutant-Spud3382d ago

Being a jerk in Fallot 3 seems worse though because everyone is basically just clinging onto life, it's kind of like running amok in a refugee camp or something.

WizzroSupreme3382d ago

Yep, jerks are everywhere these days. In our games and on our streets. Jerks suck.
