Ups
  • Better story with better characters{Great locations and even more exhilerating moments than the original{New killstreaks are great and can be designed to suit most play styles
Downs
  • Multiplayer is a mess, exploit after expoit is discovered and then fixed{Co-op is poorly implemented and is very limiting{Has gone from an strategic game to an arcade shooter

Don't trade in Call of Duty 4 just yet

It would be an understatement to say that Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) was one of the most anticipated games in recent memory. With Call of Duty 4 (COD4) being one of the most critically acclaimed games of this console generation and with COD4 being a permanent fixture as one of the top Xbox Live games since it came out, the hype train was in high gear leading up to MW2’s release. Unfortunately this sequel could not live up to the expectations that its predecessor left us with.

Modern Warfare 2’s story is in a similar format to COD4’s. You play as a couple of different soldiers with the focus of the story being on the S.A.S. Similar to COD4, you are hunting a terrorist which will lead you to multiple locations including some very eye opening engagements in the United States. I don’t want to spoil any moments but let me suffice it to say that MW2’s story is more engaging than COD4’s was and has some great twists along the way.

Probably my favorite thing about MW2 is the way in which I wasn’t let down during the entire experience. With expectations so high it is often challenging to impress the audience with those “holy sh!t” moments. Infinity Ward through out all the stops and there were plenty of great moments throughout MW2’s campaign. When you get into the online elements of MW2 all you really need to know is that it is basically COD4 on steroids. What I mean by this is more guns, more kill streaks, more customization and Infinity Ward through in some co-op to top it all off. The new kill streaks are cool and they definitely add some more customization to the gameplay.

While playing MW2 online I felt that everything added, although intended to enhance the experience severely unbalanced the game. New weapons and perks are great but not when they so obviously hinder the overall experience. Unless you live under a rock you are well aware of the issues that MW2 has been plagued with. It seems that every time Infinity Ward fixes something a new exploit is discovered. From akimbo shotguns, to Javelin glitches to care package exploits, etc. etc. Modern Warfare 2 feels as though it would have benefited from an extensive open beta. Even the co-op wasn’t fully thought out. If you don’t have any friends online willing to play co-op well then you’re just out of luck.

In general I feel that MW2 was a step back for the series. What should have been a great sequel has turned into a huge mess. I wouldn’t say this game feels rushed but I definitely believe that it would have benefited from some more testing. If you are a big COD4 fan then you may just want to stick with that, but if you are feeling adventurous then MW2 does have some things to offer. Just don’t be surprised if you don’t end up putting in the amount of hours you did with COD4.

Score
9.7
Graphics
If you liked COD4 you will feel right at home.
9.8
Sound
Frame rates are always solid and the visuals will at times blow your mind.
9.4
Gameplay
Voice overs are done very well and the sound effects are great but the score is forgettable.
8.6
Fun Factor
As long as you remain in single player or co-op the game is a lot of fun. Venturing online is a crap shoot.
7.8
Online
This is a hard score to give but there are just too many annoying glitches, too many cheaters and too much explotation.
Overall
8.2

I really hope we get other activision games on GP soon. My dream would be Scarface but I know the license probably expired

P_Bomb299d ago

Love me some Scarface! I even bought the comics. Yeah, licensing would probably be an impasse.

4Sh0w299d ago

hmmm, coincidence? Either way this is a good sign for gamers after the ABK deal.

porkChop299d ago

I played through Scarface again last year and it still holds up. Such a fun game. I would love for Xbox to get the rights back to remaster Scarface and make a sequel. It sold well and they had plans for Scarface 2, 3, and 4. With how long it takes Rockstar to make games the market is wide open.

TheColbertinator299d ago

That game was so much fun. Expected a cheap GTA clone but it was a good drug empire building game.

shinoff2183299d ago

They didn't just have plans but there's actual gameplay out there for scarface 2

neutralgamer1992299d ago

Seriously man we need games like

True crime
Sleeping dogs
Watch dogs( more like original not legion)
And proper saints row

GTA can’t be the only option we need other games

P_Bomb299d ago

@neutral
Gun was Activision as well. Nice open world Wild West there imo.

neutralgamer1992297d ago

Gun is such a underrated game

None of those games had dedicated servers on console in the first place? Were always player hosted. Did something change?

Rutaprkl298d ago

Older cods like Mw, Mw2 and WaW were way better than Call of Dutys nowadays

GoodGuy09298d ago

Make activision remaster mw2 (2009) multiplayer please xbox.

Activision Might Have Unexpectedly Fixed Some Old Call of Duty Games’ Matchmaking

Many players on social media are now reporting unannounced matchmaking fixes have been put in place by Activision ranging from Call of Duty 3 to Modern Warfare 2 to Black Ops 2, on Xbox 360. Players are reporting that player counts are updating, lobbies forming, and matchmaking times have been reduced. Neither Activision nor Microsoft have commented on the matter when reached out to at this time. This is currently impacting both 360 and BC versions of the games. PS3 is not affected at this time.

Multiple users coming forward saying the games are finally working again after years of server issues. Note that not all issues such as player counts are totally fixed at this time however matchmaking is fully working again. With legacy Call of Duty games releasing on Game Pass within the next 2 years, it does make sense for these servers to eventually be corrected. Good to see the preservation of these legendary games. Hopefully PS3 receives the same treatment for these legacy titles!

Blashted301d ago (Edited 301d ago )

I can confirm the Call of Duty 2 through Black Ops 2 are fully working now and matchmaking is very fast. Player counts are still messed up on MW2 but all other games work perfectly fine. BO1/2 community theater has been disabled so hackers are pretty rare now as infections cannot be distributed. I have not run into any modders on MW2 or BO1 yet. Good bit of people on WaW and MW3 as well. Call of Duty 3 is also back up and running after some years. The games are also currently on sale for around $10 a piece on the Xbox Store! Cheers and Happy Friday!

@Blash I took advantage of that deal and bought MW 2 , matchmaking is quick and it feels like 2009 all over again I’m having a blast !

Abear21300d ago

Next COD to integrate seamlessly with MW2, wonder if there’s a correlation?

“Activision Unexpectedly Fixes Old Call of Duty Servers, Just One Day After FTC Verdict”

Imagine that.

wiz7191300d ago

I think maybe MS had something to do with that , the servers getting fixed then all of the older CODs are on sale on the Xbox store ..

ritchi45303d ago

Conspiracy theory: MS have been planning on purchasing ABK for a long time. They let Sony outbid them for having console-exclusive CoD stuff/being first for certain dlc so the PlayStation player base would increase.
Years later, MS buy ABK, with plans to make CoD either exclusive/platform exclusive features etc with the release of a new console (Xbox Series X2?) So the established CoD player base migrates over to their platform, taking a huge percentage off Sony?

Wild theory

purple101302d ago

Yeh your in to something. See the bigger picture.

I also think to addd: Sony in a loose loose situation with the 10 year thing. I thought that from the start. Reason being they would technically be doing free marketing for COD. Any expose is good exposure and furthering the 'brand name'. So although sony would get profit for a while in the big picture they would be doing the dirty on themselves.

The Japanese execs obviously are not dumb and realise this too and that's why they fought so hard.

In general though this whole thing leaves a bad taste in the mouth with everyone's lies being out in the open and I think a lot will call it a day with cod. I know I've brought my last one.

slate91302d ago

Aint nobody leavin CoD bc of this merger or lawsuit brother 😂. Gotta get off twitter.

Blashted301d ago (Edited 301d ago )

Would not be surprised if MS fully restores old CoD on Xbox including patching mods and fixing player counts and lets PS3 versions rot away, nostalgia is a drug and Game Pass release of the old games pushes them to fix it as they would be the only Game Pass titles that are hacked/modded.

shinoff2183301d ago

I just can't fathom someone having nostalgia for cod. Blows my mind. So many better games out there

sertz301d ago

Nostalgia for COD is definitely a big thing. I have many a time found myself reminiscing about an older COD title that became a hacked mess. Primarily Black Ops 1 and 2. Also Modern Warfare 2. There was a certain "je ne sais quoi" about the original games that no remaster can touch. I'm so stoked the older titles have their servers fixed... I will definitely be re-living some memories from years ago that I never thought I would have again. And some new frustrations no doubt... But hey. One thing at a time.

shinoff2183301d ago

I don't think as many are gonna migrate as ms would like.

ActualWhiteMan301d ago

If this is true, I’m buying an Xbox rn.

wiz7191300d ago

Lol I see two ppl are upset , I got MW 2 for $10 and jump right into games immediately
