Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
SINGLE PLAYER:
By now who hasn't heard of this game? Modern Warfare 2 is the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. 2 years ago Infinity Ward shocked the world by delivering an experience that very few games offered. The presentation and storytelling in the Single Player while brief was worthy of an Oscar in Modern Warfare 1. The same does not apply to Modern Warfare 2. The style and story is delivered in the same fashion as MW1, but in MW2 the story is void of epic moments that made the first one so great. Returning players from the first games will have more surprises in store then those playing this series for the first time with Modern Warfare 2 as the story is a direct continuation of the first title with "Soap" returning with a sidekick of his own named "Roach" (American Campaign is all new because they all died in MW1). Also just like the first game the story is delivered by two world forces the Americans "Rangers" and the English "Taskforce 141". While the first game balanced the thrills amongst both campaigns fairly evenly the second does not. It appears that IW paid more attention to the returning cast member in Soap because the Taskforce campaign is where the user will experience most of the new gameplay elements such as Ice Climbing, hill sliding and snowmobile driving. While the Ranger Campaign (American) will feel just like Modern Warfare one with very little in terms of new content, in a way the Ranger Campaign felt a lot like the campaign in Resistance 1 instead of a Call of Duty game. So in order to get the full effect of Modern Warfare's 2 story I would recommend playing the first Modern Warfare. Game length just as in the first game is brief I was able to complete the game on Veteran difficulty in about 8 hours and that mainly to the fact this game still suffers from gameplay issues of the first. Such as "Jesus Bullets" that will find thier way into your forehead after the briefest of peaks from cover, A.I. Companions that will shout orders at you and tell you "I got you covered" only to find out they are full of lies and you will die if you believe them, last but not least is the enemy A.I. that for some reason will only focus on you no matter what your distance is from them. They will totally ignore your A.I. friends even if they are in closer proximity to them. While these may seem like small issues these issues artificially expand the play time since there will be a few areas of the game where one will suffer from cheap deaths and frustration from these issues.
But in general if you like the Modern Warfare Saga this game is worth the rental if only to see where the story will take you.
Multiplayer:
The MP in Modern Warfare 1 was the meat and potatoes of the experience where user spend 100's upon 1000's of hours fraggin there buddies and strangers. Modern Warfare 2 MP will satisfy the most hardcore but may leave everybody else wanting more. The gameplay is largely unchanged from the first with the exception of some new perks and larger maps. I view the MP as a huge let down. The new perks are a welcomes addition but those who don't fight other clans online will run into the same 2 perks from the first game "Stopping Power" and "Juggernaut", I would've hoped that IW would remove these 2 perks altogether to promote variety in their MP but as is you'll get MW 1.5. The maps are larger as well but unfortunately the player caps remain the same, which will leave a lot players wondering around the map looking for a confrontation that will last all of 5 seconds depending on how many enemy contacts are made. The larger maps would've made more sense had they expanded the player caps or used dedicated server to support the massive user base this game was bound to have. The map and style of the MP reminds me a lot of Killzone 2 but with no Dedicated server support, the low player cap hinders the experience greatly.
CooP:
A new addition to this game is Spec Ops which will allow you and a buddy to play through several levels of MW2 and MW1. This expands the time and experience one will have with the game but I just didn't feel the need to add a whole new gameplay type when the time spent could've been spent fixing single player issues and making sure MP was better. Allowing me play an altered version of the SP campaign in CooP with a buddy from beginning to end would've made for a better experience.
Sound:
Sound design in MW1 was great and MW2 expands that area 10 fold to make the experience more captivating.
Graphics:
MW1 with slightly upgraded graphics. There are tons of bland shiny textures with a lighting systems that causes tons of jaggies while playing. The Ranger campaign suffers more than the taskforce 141 campaign in graphics due to level design.
BOTTOMLINE:
The experience found in MW2 will vary greatly depending on how your past experience with the franchise as a whole. If you play this game for the single player the single player will be loads better for users that have played MW1 than those who have not, since there are tons of insider plot points that only make sense if you played MW1.
The multiplayer experience will vary greatly amongst preference, if you loved and still played the original MW1 up until launch of MW2 then you will eat this game up as there is more of what you like but expanded. If you were one of those who liked it for about 2-3 months and then moved on to something else then this game will be a pass because its more of the same of what you liked and have moved on from.
The original Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 games have been drawing players back in
I really hope we get other activision games on GP soon. My dream would be Scarface but I know the license probably expired
None of those games had dedicated servers on console in the first place? Were always player hosted. Did something change?
Modern Warfare 2 fans have taken to Reddit to mock Call of Duty for reusing skin designs in the BlackCell pass ahead of Season 4 launch.
not surprised i trued playing the new cod it still very hard for me to find the game 2days ago on pc i clicked the exe watched a cutscene could not skip 5 store ads then spent 10min trying to find were to play the game.
There is more store ads/directories than anything so why not reuse stuff its 80% mt's 20% video game now
Does anyone know were the single player went? never finished it can not find how to launch it on pc
After numerous missteps, Call of Duty, after a good long while, is finally on the right track with Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0.
nice review
i totally don't agree!
I'd give it somewhere between and 8.0 and 8.5 simply because it's more or less (in regards to MP) the same game with more thought. The maps are definitely a whole lot better than those on Modern Warfare and I haven't found one I dislike.
As for "jaggies" the reviewer is talking about I haven't seen any glaring mistakes/errors as of yet.
