As of August 2009, it is the best-selling console of all time, continuing to move units years into this current generation. More than three years after the launch of the PlayStation 3, the PS2 has had plenty of new releases, which cannot be said of its former rivals, the Gamecube and Xbox. Both Nintendo's and Microsoft's last-gen systems seemingly ceased production not long after their next-gen counterparts launched, but the PS2 has continued to have strong sales. True, this was aided by a shaky PS3 launch that failed to win over a lot of previous Sony system owners, and the slim model and agreeable price certainly made the PS2 a nice choice for impulse buyers. At any rate, it's undeniable that the PlayStation 2's performance over the last nine years and counting is impressive. However, looking over the new releases planned for this year, it seems like the PS2 could be in its last days."

Resident Evil 4 Takes Crown in a Showdown of the Decade

Rely on Horror writes: "Looking at review scores in magazines isn't always the best way of telling if a game is for you. However having been the bastion of them for as long as I can remember they probably are still the deciding factor when it comes to what people go out and buy.

Nonetheless the folks over at Kotaku have conducted research into the best games of each year from the past decade purely based on review scores from well known aggregate review sites GameRankings and Metacritic. I feel many of us have been betrayed over the years, by many of those in whom we trust, or feel we do. I own Steel Battalion, a game many would not have paid 200$ for at launch. Though I still own an original Xbox, the game will never be backwards compatible because of the controller connection, will only match an original Xbox, and I wouldn't expect a company to release an adapter for an extinct product line."

PS2's last RPG Summon Night Granthese: trailer, 57 images

A new trailer and 57 screens and art shots of what many are calling the PS2's last RPG, Summon Night Granthese.

Final Fantasy XII - Star Wars Comparison

At the onset of Final Fantasy XII, gamers could not help but feel a strong sense of deja vu, as the Square-Enix-developed JRPG held a great deal of similarities with the famous series of science fiction films.

Overall VGChartz Game of the Year Awards 2009

"On the final day of 2009 we present you with our picks for the best games of the entire year!"

Top 10 most visually impressive games of the decade (2000-2009)

VGArabia: You need more than amazing graphics in order to make a great game. But at the same time, no one can deny the fact that great visuals do make a good game even better. A year later, the PS3 launched with a graphics synthesizer chip installed specifically for full-on PS2 software compatibility. Said chip also contributed to the exorbitant $600 price tag of the console. Meanwhile, the Wii was fully backwards compatible with all GameCube games. Fast forward to the present, and Microsoft is – more or less – done with adding titles to the forward-compatibility list (old games you play on a new system are forward compatible, whereas systems that play old games are backwards compatible), while Sony actually took a step in the opposite direction, losing back compat. Have they dropped support for the feature simply because it's not worth the effort? More important, does anyone care about backwards compatibility?
