The reason the update "fails" is that people don't read the information provided in the PSN Store before they install the new game mode. It clearly says that you need to start the game and go "online" to get the 1.2 patch before installing "Time Trial". If people mess up then they can easily fix it by deleting "Game Data" (not saves) and download the patches before installing Time Trial.
