BBC: The HD format battle rumbles on

"The advent of High Definition TV has spurred a minor boom in the sales of screens on which to watch such gorgeous images. But buying a HD TV involves making a difficult choice about which of the two competing HD formats you back."

This report overviews the three major differences between the two competing formats: supporting consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360), player prices, and the special features interfaces (BD-J vs. HDi).

Same here. Even if HD-DVD manages to survive the coming battles, it will probably never assume the power it once had. Unless something drastic happens again, like them offering to offer a really large cash payment for one of the Blu Ray or neutral studios to cover the losses of switching to HD-DVD, this format war is just about over.

On a side note, IGN will probably be the main game review site now that GS probably lost its last few ounces of credibility.

7 - Definitely not rumbling on for long.

Blu-ray already has 72% of the North American market (and basically all of Europe and Japan), and its market share over HD-DVD keeps increasing. Microsoft has pumped too much money into HD-DVD to allow it to die off, but it'll inevitably lost support from its exclusive supporters (of which there are very few). In fact, one of its largest supporters is only exclusive for one year, and then it gets to support Blu-ray again, which is quite humorous.

BDA exposed. Best Buy gave away a free movie with the purchase of the PS#3 an 11 month old movie Open Season. The number 2 sell High Def movie last week was Open Season. Free movies should not be counted. Real ratio 61% Blu 39% HD.

7.2 - Well, both sides count movies that are given away.

And I don't really understand why, but it helps them boost their overall numbers and helps gain exposure to consumers. If that many copies of Open Season were given away for the PS3 by Best Buy though, makes you wonder how many PS3s they shifted within just that week from one retailer.

Ya. HD-DVD camp is also guity of double standard. Not counting the PS3 as a standalone player when statistic does not work in their favor, while includung them for ratio of movie disc sales per player.
Come on. Both sides are giving free movies.
But to me, HD-DVD is a struggling format. Sooner or later...Dead.
Stop dreaming only in the north american market where is still struggling. ELSEWHERE the format is already put to the sword.
I feel sorry for the consumers who are being "tricked" into buy the cheap HD-DVD players only to last them a short time.
While we often say...short term gain, long term loss.

10 - Its too far to tell

Theres more Blu-Ray players out there and more Blu-Ray movies being sold. But its important to remember that the HD DVD attatchemnt rate of a player is a lot higher.

I believe that the time we will find out who will win is when HD DVD players match up to Blu-Ray.
If HD DVD then keeps it attatchment rate and has the same numeber of players as Blu-Ray then it will win. But if it doesn't Blu-Ray will win.
