this doesnt do anything. heres why,

They make a dual format player, Warner's titles still sell 2:1 on blu-ray but at a higher volume. they still have the dilema of going exclusive to one format or another.

also the pricing is very important. if this dual format player costs more than 800$ i can guarentee it wont do anything to the format war.

If anything this will help the Blu-Ray format.. having a dual format is good for the consumer but BAD for the Studios. Creating two different format costs them more money. The Ps3 is the deciding factor, as it's sales pickup companies will start to go BD exclusive.

Unless, Xbox 360s start pumping out HD-DVD enabled systems, or the Wii decides to go HD-DVD there is nothing else that can hinder the growth of the format.

Scrillakilla. Anywayz back to the topic, Warner Bros. will make an announcment as to whom they will support exclusively at CES 2008. They are watching stand alone sales not add-on or PS#3. The most growth for a format is thru stand alones their sole purpose is to play movies. I mean the PS#3 has been outselling HD DVD players all year but it is still 2-1.

While I pray for this war to end soon, I don't think a dual player could end the war. Plus, it's really expensive and those that had the money to go HD already have their BD or HD player and those that were waiting for lower prices and such, won't go for that $800 thing, at least IMO.

When are people going to learn it's not about the hardware... It's about the disc based media that consumers buy? It's movies that are available. So, yeah... a Blu-ray/Hd-dvd player would go along ways in helping consumers decide which format to buy and they ahve the luxury of owning both... but it still speaks volumes when consumers are buying blu-ray 75% over Hd-dvd. So, even with this it's likely to not change what really matters... the actual movie sales.

If anything at all... this would only make the war go on longer, cause people would have a choiuce of buying 1, the other or both now. Most people go with one player and odn't look back so it's not an option. You give them the option of playing all yoru hd-dvd movies and blu-ray movies on 1 player and well... consumers start buying more of everything, but that also means stand alone players would be obsolete and people/consumers would lose again.

all it would take is one more major electronics manufacturer to back either blu-ray or hd-dvd and that'd be the end of the other. right now it is sony with blu-ray and toshiba with hd-dvd, if samsung (or any other major electronics manufacturer) decided to go exclusive with either one that'd be the end of the battle. it doesn't even have to be an electronics company, even one of the big six film production companies...paramount/dreamwor ks, 20th century fox, disney, or universal studios.

I get it when it comes to exclusives in the videogame world, but now we have to deal with the same B.S. when it comes to formats and which movies are going to be on each respective machine?

I for one an completely content with my 360 and my stand alone DVD (NOT HD) player, and I refuse to choose a format until this thing plays out. A deal needs to be struck. One format needs to go away, and I'm guessing that just isnt going to happen for some time yet.

If you're buying a 1080p HD DVD player it's only 100$ less expensive. People keep talking about the HD-a2 and HD-a3 because they sell for 100$-200$... They are so cheap because they are 1080p players... Why spend all that money on a new format and not take advantage of it??
btw my math is like this, toshiba hd-a30 = 299$ + samsung blue ray player or ps3 = 399$ so total you would spend 700$, still cheaper.

However, I have been saying for a couple of months now, that if they come out with a cheap combo player then the format war will be pretty much over. Everyone will buy the 400$ or less dual format player and let Sony and Toshiba have their slap fight forever if they want. (400$ is the price i decided it would have to be in my head to make it the obvious choice).

This is why I'm glad to be a gamer though. I have a PS3 and an xbox 360, so if i went out and spent 170$ I would have access to both formats, thus putting me in a situation of not having to take a side.

The current consumer market shows that dual-format players are only bought by people seeking to play last-generation's media.

Such as VHS / DVD combo players.

I'm pretty sure there were Betamax / VHS players when they came out....but that didn't stop VHS from winning.

So whoever wins (blu-ray, most likely) will definitely advertise that while playing newer high-def movies, their device can also play all of their original DVD movies, of which some people have thousands.

I can guarantee you that the general consumer isn't going to want double of a thing they're unsure of (high-def formats).

This DF player is NOT going to affect the format competetion.

I know a lot of you would like this competetion to end up in sunshine and roses, but there WILL be a winner and loser.

That's how most of the world's economies work. One succeeds where another one fails.

But not for a while.

DVD is still holding strong.

Once the Ps3 sales start to skyrocket at end of 2008 - due to another price drop, AAA exlusives, two year library of games - then it will be game, set and match for BD.

It would be silly to buy a stand alone player worth US$200 when for an extra $200, you get a next gen gaming console as well.

So it's all just a matter of time.

800$ for a dual format player. Or Take that 800 and get yourself a 80ps3. A couple of games,import a dualshock3,the eye, and a bag of herb... hmmm i wonder which is the best buy.

Speaking of best buy. Sony lowered their Blu-Ray player to 399$ and it comes with Spider-Man 3 Blu-Ray...

All the more reason to buy a PS3... Sony is winning the Format, and System war slowly but surely
