Wii overtakes Xbox 360, becomes fastest selling console ever made

According to the report, total Wii units sold stand at 10.6 million, slightly more than the Xbox 360's estimated 10.5 million. Since its release, the Wii has outsold 360 by a margin of more than 2 to 1.

1.1 - A valid argument

An equally valid argument: Give the Wii HD graphics and it would sell like crazy x10.

The truth is that neither point is valid; the PS3 and 360 wouldn't be that cheap and keep their attractive graphics and the Wii wouldn't have HD graphics and keep its attractive price point.

So stop saying that stuff and let's face that Nintendo, thus far, is doing quite well.

Europe is torn but the 360 is leading the way there thusfar in total sales.

At E32007 Microsoft announced that they were selling slightly less than the Wii since the Wii's launch and selling 2 to 1 over the Ps3 since its launch.....But the most impressive stat of all was that the xbox 360 has sold more games than the Wii and the Ps3 combined since their launches.....WOW....

Its all about the games....

But the Wii is SELLING MORE in the US. The 360 isn't really the only king of the US because, eventually, it could be beaten by the Wii.

Oh, LOL, hardware numbers don't propel your "360 is winning" point, so you switch off to software. Saying "its all about the game" actually avoids the article and goes into a new topic.

And don't give me that "slightly less" sales crap. The 360 has taken almost 2 years to get barely higher where the Wii got in 9 months.

Well, that's not really the point of the article.

But hey, that's OK, I think most of the people understand. There's a kind of silent oath on N4G that as long as people keep dissing the Wii its sales are invalid.

You and I both know that the Wii's attach rate is probably low because of all of the non-gamers that have picked it up and just can't get enough of Wii Sports. I say that if the 360 or PS3 had been so non-gamer friendly then you'd see very much the same story.

It's between 4 and 4.5, so its not really low.

No one reports it, though, so you have to calculate it for yourself, and that means using different times, most likely, so you can't get an exact answer, but it should be in that area according to the numbers I saw.

I used numbers from wikipedia and vgchartz, so accorting to MS and sony fanboys, the attach rate is actually higher.

That's a choice :) you don't have to buy it if you don't like the games...I'm guessing the casual crowd doesn't mind it only having one purpose, as the hardcore nintendo fans get their franchises, as well as the 3rd parties get a piece of the install base.

12.2 - Hmm how can I put it

This probably isn't the best way to describe if you'd like the system or not. But if you've play Singstar, Eye toy, Buzz, are into a lot of the party games that where on the PS2(mini games, Olympic games etc etc). Or anything that has quirky controls that worked real well, like on the DS, Eye toy. Then I would defiantly recommend it. Thats why I got a Wii, because I knew heaps of games like that would be coming out for it.

Oh yeah and its quite a social console, so if you play a lot of games by yourself you probably won't enjoy it much.

13 - Whatever the case, I'd bet a dime to a dollar that the Wii

will be the top dog by the end of the year. It's gonna be a hot commodity this Christmas(as if it isn't already), and I wouldn't be surprised to see the user base in the neighborhood of 14-16 million by the years end. Amazing how the momentum has not stopped or reached it's peak just yet. We're all saying how well the PS3 and 360 will do after price drops...imagine what happens when this thing hits $175.00.

One word: Pandemonium.

My hats off to Nintendo. If I could ever find one I'd get it, but I guess I'll have to wait until either production gets ramped up or the craze dies down a bit.

I think a Wii price drop is a long way off. The thing holding back sales now is production. By the time supply starts meeting/exceeding demand it'll probably still be the least expensive new system so they won't need to play the price-point card just yet. I could see it at $199 by holiday 2009.

The other possibility is that the hype will die down, sales will slow and they'll have to cut it to motivate them. I just think the Wii "fad" will last well into next year.

wii will overtake the 360 very soon, if not already.

I however believe that people will move on from the wii as it's essentially a gamecube with a new controller. The online play still sucks the big one, which is something that should have been ready before launch. the "mii's" got lame pretty damn quick. I think
most will likely get a 360 and ps3 shortly after. most people I know with a wii are already bored of it, and plan on getting 1 of the 2 consoles this xmas.

I was planning on getting a wii, but I think i'm gonna pass, my money will be better spent on rock band and guitar hero 3.

of course I still think its a gimmick console with about 1 days worth of fun factor before you are thinking, "OK thats it, whats next"= but you know what my opinion doesnt mean shiii= the masses are lovin it and its kickin 360 and ps3 @ss EVERYWHERE, ha ha if it hasnt passed 360 already= vgchartz is wrong, either way its just a matter of time before the Wii grabs the lead. Still if it sold 200 mil until it has graphics and games that I like I wouldnt buy it, but I know alot who did buy it and now say its boring= which is why I think the Wii is only suited for those who arent serious gamers, the casual kind that play board games, and cell phone stuff and I guess that market is huge, kind of like how your grandma would see someone playing Wii sports and say "hey let me try that" but wouldnt even touch a 360 controller to play an amazing game like Bioshock= so Wii's market is very different but I dont want to downplay what Ninty has done and they should get credit for tapping into that HUGE nongamer market. hey Ninty I tip my hat to you, good job. Now you want to talk 360 vs PS3 then bring it on, cause I think micro has the upper hand when it comes to knowing what the base gamers and hardcore gamers want to play.

sheesh - sounds like the Wii may not be the console for you. The only Wii game I have any interest in at the moment is Zelda, but it's just not enough for me. We'll probably pick up a Wii eventually, but for the moment I hardly have enough time to play all the PS3 and 360 games I want to - which will only be more so in the next few months.

Anyway - they do need to bring it with the games. They've talked about more/better 3rd party titles, but I haven't seen or heard anything that makes me believe it.

I think, if they can get enough Wii's shipped, Nintendo shouldn't have too much trouble surpassing the 360 in total units sold. 360 has Halo 3 coming which should move some units, Nintendo had several of it's big IPs on the way - so who knows how their respective paces will be affected by that. One thing that's certain is that the Wii has been selling a lot faster so unless that changes it's going to be in the lead fairly soon.

Honestly at this point I still hold my opinion that the Wii is a gimmick console. All it offers is a fun diversion for when you have a group of friends over and want to play some mini games or Mario Party type games.

People are going to realize that the Wii isn't going to be offering many deep gaming experiences like the other consoles can. Sure it had Zelda, but you could have played that on Gamecube...since then though the Wii hasn't offered much in deep gaming. And we will never really see games like BioShock or Oblivion on the Wii.

Wii's are selling fast because they are cheap and a unique diversion. But once the whole gimmick wears off, I think people will go buy a 360 or PS3.

but dude- that is the entire point of the Wii - it in general offers no depth to it - it is pick up and play for a while and leave it be, that's how it has got the non gamer crowd - that and a controller that does not look as intimidating as the generic two stick gamer pad. It is a combination of those things tht makes the wii appealing - while I will say that maybe some of the players of the wii will then move up to a 360/ps3, the majority will be happy with the pick up and play for five minutes type games - they have no desire to get into the more intense side of gaming.

And once that wiifit thing is released, I think the Wii will be even more in demand from the casual gamer crowd - all those alpha moms queing up for it - I can honstly see it now.

Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil UC, No More Heros, Battlion wars 2, Dragon Blade, Red Steel 2, Mario Kart, Fire Emblem, Dragon Quest, Nitro Bike, Fanal Fantasy, Zack & Wiki, NBA Live, Madden, Fifa, these games arent going to give deep gaming experiences? But anyway you obviously dont have a wii so you ignore all of the good games coming out for it and of course like most wii haters to dont make a effort to know ALL of the games coming out for the wii. But anyway, Nintendo is making great decisions like the Sony did for the PS2. The games on the system appeal to a wide fanbase (Like PS2). The dev time is fast and profitable (like PS2). Solid first party software (Like PS2). Good Third Party support (Like PS2). Innovative with fresh ideas like, you guessed it the PS2. Now i dont think the wii will sell as much as the PS2 but i do think it will sell well over 30 million consoles easily, and if they do that Nintendo will be in so much money Bill Gates might get a little scared.

These chart arguments are useless. They are always slanted to prove what ever bias point the person is trying to make. You can slant the charts to make it seem like any of them are winning.

What about the difference in console price?
What about the difference in time of releases?
What about waiting until all consoles release their system movers (big games)?
What about ratio in which sales are increasing/decreasing?
What about known trends?
etc. etc. etc.

The Nintendo consoles are aimed at family and kids, the image and style of Nintendo isn't for me those types of games don't need horsepower.

Most can careless what Nintendo's doing; to me its in a market between Handhelds and and next-gen.

They're putting Wii's in retirement homes and Wii is the new crazz for good clean fun and simple too! WoW I thought it would flop.
