Gears of War PS3 rumour squashed

Rumours have been flying fast and furious since 1UP's speculation on a number of podcasts that Epic Games had plans to extend the Gears of War franchise onto the PlayStation 3. Understandably, the comments made in the podcast created somewhat of a storm in a teacup, with many Xbox 360 fans rather unhappy with Epic's apparently lackadaisical approach to exclusivity.

However, Epic's Mark Rein recently contacted PSX Extreme to clarify the situation.

Get UTIII out now!

I doubt they'd put a BRAND NEW PS3 EXCLUSIVE out...if it were set in the GOW universe. That's the DUMBEST thing I've ever heard. They just said it would be a GOW-like game. That probably means Third Person Shooter.

Then again, they could put GOW2 on the PS3. That'd be nice. You know, of course, that MS doesn't own it in the least bit. They helped produce the first one, but that doesn't mean Epic is signed on for anything. Even with the MS name on it...they could revamp it on the PS3...possibly with a good draw-distance, more enemies on screen, and less glitches. Yeah...like Oblivion. That was a NIIIIIIICE port! I love when developers care!

Seriously though, you can't see GeOW2 on the PS3??? Why not? It's a great franchise and I can see it selling well on the 360...but NOT as well as the first one did. The second one will be competing with Halo 3, UTIII, Haze, and everything else! It was innovative at the time, but I don't know how long it will last amongst the gaming masses...who are hooked on Halo. I still haven't figured out why...but they are. PC gamers are STILL in talks of why Halo got so big. It's pretty much a mystery to the pre-xbox gaming community.

EDIT 2: Show me again...where it says a PUBLISHER owns the rights to ANY game??? Ubisoft published DMC3 and RE4 for the PC. They can't do SQUAT with those franchises though.

Where did you see that MS bought the rights to GeOW??? According CliffyB...in an interview...Midway owns the rights to the franchise. Midway, who owns Epic now. Did no one bother to look ANY of this up? You heard rumors LAST YEAR that MS purchased the GOW franchise. Not true.

Midway DOES NOT OWN EPIC. They are licensing the rights to unreal only. Epic owns Epic. Just like Atari licensed unreal prior. Microsoft AND Epic went in to CREATE GOW so they both own the IP. Just like he said, it's up to MS because they make the other half of the duo.

Actually Microsoft does not own anything in the GeOW series except the rights to the first two games. GeOW 3 could be on any of the other platforms.

By the time Gears of war 2 comes out, Haze, Halo3, UTIII and "everything else" will be old. And Epic would've learnt all the new stuff they need to put in their game. 4-player co-op, save films...I just hope they fix the network code.

were for a Gears like game.

I am pretty sure that Micro has secured the rights to the first 2 Gears of War games or anything dealing with the Gears Universe.

And seeing as how the first one is published by Micro there isn't a way for it to appear on PS3.

With Gears being so successful and selling 360s I really don't see Micro letting this one ever go. I could see them paying up to keep it always exclusive.

These sites just want to get some extra traffic on their sites so they come up with these irrational rumors. Face it Gears will not go to PS3 and MGS4 will not come to 360. Both the devs are clear on that. Maybe games based on that IP might become multi but not the same games. I seriously dont see any drought of games on either systems (well for ps3 there is dry patch till 2008) so no point in fighting over these franchises. If you're that desperate for a particular game then go and pick up that console.

Microsoft did allow Halo and Fable to be published for Mac after all, even though Apple has always been such an ass to Microsoft, Microsoft has always treated Apple with tolerance and kindness.

(Heck, Microsoft even bailed out Apple in 1997 by injecting cash into a dying Apple back when Apple was almost bankrupt and all other buyers were just interested in taking apart Apple and selling it piece-by-piece.)

To be honest, that was more about saving themselves. Had apple gone under, it would have been deamed nigh on impossible for a competitor to enter the market and MS would have been labeled as a monopoly, and probably forced to downsize or split up it's operations. It was the lesser of two evils.

Back on topic, considering it was published by MS, it was never going to come to the PS3. As for a game in the GoW universe... while possible, I don't think it will happen. I'd rather see a new IP for the PS3 anyways, and Epic is the type of company to run an exclusive IP on each console, which can really show off each one's strengths. But I just want them to get UT in spanking condition first so I can give my PC a real run through the mill!

very well put. Saying Epic can make any of Gears of War available on the PS3 is equivalent to saying Guerilla Games can make any Killzone available on the 360. Its all Bollocks. So stop useless console fanatic bull already. Esp to that subset of PS3 fans, I don't know why you would want GeOW so badly instead of a totally new IP set in an entirely different place(hopefully a vibrant and living one).

And I got like 18 disagrees for saying one word which was true "Dreams". A Droids life is all dreams, all day. people keep saying that MS only has the rights to 2 GOW games, thats not true!! they made a deal with EPIC for a TRILOGY( 3 games) not 2. just like they got with mass effect(trilogy, 3 games) an too human (trilogy, 3 games) they also have the option after the 3 games are done to have first rights to keep it exclusive, an you guys KNOW MS aint gonna let that game go anywhere around the PLAYSTATION!!

But this article is somewhat nonsense. Their is no "Gears of War on PS3" rumor. Thats an old lame wives tale. The Podcast from 1UP hinted towards a Gears of war like I.P. That could of just been a 3rd person shooter with a gears of war like cover system and rodey run or maybe even similar weapons/environments. That would not merit the game being Gears of War or even an extension. Correct me if im wrong. Either way I think people have this a little worked up. NO gears is not coming to PS3 fact. And I dont think anyone with a PS3 wants gears as bad as people think they do. I may be wrong on that but my view is. If you havent played Gears of War yet wether you own A 360 or not and your waiting for it to come to PS3. Then you are the true definition and prime example of why people should not be fanboys.

This article still leaves the question open...What game will Epic make after UT3? If Epic can develop two games simultaneously (UT3 and GEars of War) then they could be working on Gears of War 2 and UT3 now: but UT3 will be released in September, so what would there second games be? Or go straight onto making the next UT game?

these rumors are coming right from X360 fans and Microsoft itself, don't see why PS3 players would want this game (I personally don't). I admit its great game, since I've seen it playing in a couple game stores, but why want this? which that leads me to X360 and Microsoft trying to hype the game, so more people get X360's or the pc version to play it.

I bet there will be rumors soon about Halo3 coming to PS3...
