Reggie: Modern Warfare 2 may have trouble maintaining sales while NSMB Wii will sell consistently
34
Following his comments last week, Nintendo's Reggie Fils Aime believes Modern Warfare 2 may have trouble sustaining sales and has made a comparison between the sales of the title and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

I have to agree that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is going to have long legs. New Super Mario Bros. (DS) is still selling very well to this day and that was released in 2006. Besides, Mario titles always perform very well.

I agree. MW2's sales will drop off by a ton fairly immediately, while NSMBWii will keep its long legs and sell very well for a very long time.
Still, I think that MW2 will probably have more lifetime sales.

@ Smacktard - It's possible. Modern Warfare 2 is off to a good start already. Should be interested to see how Mario Bros. Wii sells in its first month.

I'm not too sure about that, Super Mario is a lot more famous due to how long the series has been running and the amount of games (Even flash online games) but the gameplay is very repetitive... but then again, the repetition also applies to Modern Warfare 2. :?

They will maintain constant sales due to their core audience.
People you like MW2 (like me) have been waiting for it. We knew the launch date and were counting the days for it to arrive. WII owners dont do that.
They will be like:
"Hey! Thats a new Mario game! We should get it!"
MW2 croud is more like:
"I already got it!"
The casual gamer buys a game by going to mall. Hardly they pre order or reserve a copy with such anticipation like the rest audience.
My 2 cents.

Super Mario Bros (except Sunshine....) > CoD.
At least, that's how it is for me. I'm a hard Sony supporter but I can't get enough Mario.

Haven't played a Super Mario game since new super marios on the DS. But most likely will play this one with my niece and nephew since it's 4 player co-op.

Already played NSMB.
It's ok.
As a long-time Mario fan...I'm very disappointed though. The reviews were making me think it would be AMAZING!!!
It's like what LBP would be like if they gave you maybe half of the story levels...and NO user-created content. So...not all that great.

4.2 - I was checking out LBP user created content
And the users have become very talented using the LBP tool, i played an amazing level that got me thinking how many games are released as full games and are so poorly develope, LBP community is producing some nice gems, Sony should made an effort to give the user content popularity in the " What is New" in the XMB, that would be sweet

Gaming...you COULDN'T be more right. I often play LBP with my lads online and some of the levels they'be made are cool for how old they are but some of the better ones these days are incredible and really go put the official ones a little in the shade.
It's part of the reasons behind why I still play UT3 with a bunch of mates every other tuesday. We choose a cools mod and import it to PS3 and have a vall. Had IW allowed the dedicated servers and mods like Epic and Sony did for that game(which in many ways is a flop I suppose)we could all have had some amazing experiences online with MW2 and it''s vast number of players, no? It adds to the game, gives it longer sales legs as well but IW just don't want DLC that we don't pay them for even if it DOES benefit them AND make their product perform and sell better. It's also partially why the 360 version of L4D isn't worth half of what the PC version is while we actually pay a lot more for it! Why MS and Valve won't allow it is beyond me and shows a lack of respect to us, their gamers imo.
As for Reggie-well in one way he's got a point but it won't outsell MW2 overall so why open his trap? Even hje only thinks it will outsell ONE or the other console versions!
Also agree with Leon there about SMBW-the fawning reviews are misleading and some of the more level headed ones written from a non "OMG 2D MAZZA! We're not worthy!" are more sensible, imo. Kotaku's is a joke, imo. Th levels, from what I'v playedd instore, are EASY and relatively dunbed down pastiches of former glories. Yeah, the bostalgia is cool and all but after a while you just wish it did something OF IT'S OWN and made better use of the relative gorsepower boost the Wii offers. The lack(IIRC) of a classic controller/GC pad option also wrankles with me as the waggle parts aren't that accurate and in a game like this that's really a little sad.
Don't get me wrong it's a good game, just not a great one and for a 2D Mario it's a bit easy, a bit too in awe of it's history, has dodgy motion controlled bits and playing with 4 is just too crowded and frustrated me after about 20 seconds. I sound like I'm being really hard on it but after so many fawning reviews I expected greatness and it's not there-it's not as good as it's DS cousin, imo, and while it's prolly a better game with two of you playing the lack of trad controls was a real downer for me. Just a rental I think, for me, and I'll wait to see how the 2D Sonic turns out-surely they're DUE a success, no?
Whatever, I just hope they do much better with DMG2 and they haven't rushed it. AND where's our Zelda? Don't they realise we know we haven't had one built FOR the Wii yet? They've had an age to do it considering it's going to be similar in style to TP, no? Plus that game was finished WELL before Wii launched so what exactly is the massive hold up?
I'm starting to get frustrated with Nintendo now and them failing to publish Fatal Frame 4 in the west didn't help when I'd veen looking forward to it for ages AND it actually looked like a GOOD Wii survival horror game. Bah!

I don't think Activision cares that their sales will taper off. They made so much money in the last couple of days, they probably can't hear any news from the outside world with all the cash insulating their offices.

5.1 - long sales legs are overrated
infinity want quick sales all at once so there are loads of people to sell them all DLC in a few months to give them even more paper to choke on in there office

does it really matter and does IW really care, when your game sells 5 million copies in what, 2 days, i really dont think they are sitting around scratching their heads thinking hey, will this thing still sell in 4 months.
I gather that so far mw2 has done more then 360mill, nothing to worry about reggie now go play with your wii.

Not in software sales no. The sad thing is, Ifeel, that they've kept this too easy for just that reason. It should be a REAL challenge to complete the levels(and with a real controller FFS!-it's a2D Mario platformer, who wants motion there?)but the ones I've played were pi55 easy and I'm no great Mario player.

When the wii first came out, I knew about 7 people (myself included)who were in love with the wii and that it would revolutionize the industry. Today every one of those people's wiis lie in a corner gathering dust, and have been replaced with ps3s and 360s. Reggie needs to realise that no one really cares anymore, and that (for the most part) the people who buy games for the wii are not the ones who are into actual gams

15 - Biggest NO $*%&! Comment yet...
As tired of Mario games as I am, I'll still buy this and Mario is an EXTREMELY attractive purchase prospect for family-centered gaming. This will be the perfect pairing for Holiday Wii purchases, and honestly...if you aren't buying Mario games on you Nintendo machine, you might as well stop buying Ratchet or Uncharted on your PS consoles, Halo and Forza on your Microfost consoles. First Party titles are why we support these platforms are they not?
