Modern Warfare: Reflex / Modern Warfare Side By Side Comparison

Gamervision: "The Wii usually receives ports of big title games, but it has taken a full two years for Infinity Ward to bring its blockbuster franchise Modern Warfare to the console. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex promises to bring the truest version of Modern Warfare to the Wii, but sacrifices have been made. Watch for yourself and see just how the two titles compare."

It's not as bad as I could imagine. I'm certainly getting a Wii soon and will probably buy this COD as well, what annoys me is that it's the same good ol' COD4, not a new campaign, so I may feel like gnawing it to the bone.

Too bad this game will be overshadowed by its successor.

Its also a shame that it comes 2 years late and has been downgraded due to wii's graphical capabilities.

But I guess its better late than never. Right?

this game had 30 people and 6 months to do the port id say that isnt no where near enough time to make the best of the wii god the 360 wouldnt even get this far with 6 months and 30 people so the wii is a strong platform that activision/EA keep under using the graphics MP3 corruption smokes this in graphics and that is 60fps this is 30fps but thiere isnt anything in that video that couldnt have been sorted with 6 more months and more than 30 peop;e to work on the game its a big game and what activision have done isnt fare but if the wii can do this in basically a quarter of the time really needed to do such a game imagine a ground up call of duty with this engine improved wow it would stand right next to the best looking shooters out there all day long easy not seing a big difference in graphics on that video

Infinity Ward didn't bring it over, Treyarch did.

I think people need to stop being foolish about "what the Wii is capable of." Its exactly as you can expect: a lack of lighting effects and shaders, and lower-resolution textures. The biggest difference is the ocean and lightning. And, this doesn't even seem to be a very solid port effort when you compare the graphics to the likes of Metroid and some of the effects in Conduit- I'm sure that developers can get a lot more out of the Wii but it is at least exciting to hear all of the "technically possible on Wii" talk as of late such as with Resident Evil 5. It's about time the "HD" developers got over themselves- all they do is use the same engines over and over again.;

quantumriian -- You're right about developers pushing the Wii with games like Corruption and Conduit. But those are ground-up affairs. A game is always going to look better when it's built specifically for one console and plays to that hardware's strengths.

This was a port, with code intended for much more powerful hardware. All things considered, I think Treyarch did a very good job.

Also, this game has a LOT more going on than Conduit. There are more maps, the maps are much bigger (some of Conduit's maps could comfortably sit in one of Reflex's and only take up half the space -- or less), air strikes are constantly being brought in, and the overall architecture is much more intricate.
[Plus, the online is far superior. Even without voice chat. You don't spawn off the map or in walls. Nor do you wait 7 or 8 minutes to get a match going.]

Corruption looks better and runs at 60 FPS, but for the most part, it's about exploration, not combat.

All of that said...damn, what I wouldn't give to see Treyarch get the keys to the car and build something specifically for Nintendo's console.

Agreed. In other posts I mention the unfortunate state of game developers and/or publishers who are unwilling or unable to develop their own game engines. This is especially damaging for the Wii- but I believe it is due more to a lack of developer ingenuity and publisher willingness than a crippling deficiency in hardware power on the Wii's part.

Why can't developers get better than PS2-level graphics out of the system? Where is the variation in software? Real-time strategy and third-person shooters might be better fits for the Wii remote than even FPS' are. Not since gaming came to home consoles was there such great opportunity for controllers- and subsequently, for game-types that require the precision afforded by a mouse.

I think part of it was that developers expected Wii to fail. They moved on and made their investments in upgraded game engines for the HD consoles. They could squeeze more out of each console last gen when the hardware was similar.

Now, they aren't building with that in mind. They're building up to the standards of the 360 or PS3, then porting down for the Wii.

OTOH, a developer like Retro is building UP only; they're not starting with a far superior graphical engine and cutting it down. They're starting with PS2/GC/XB-era tech and supercharging it. You can clearly see the difference in a game like Corruption. It looks similar to the last gen efforts, but it's gotten smoother and more polished.

MWR would've looked better if the game engine was from super polishing COD2-era graphics, not porting down COD4-era graphics.

You're on the money with TPS and RTS, IMO. The possibilities are so much greater with the Wii remote. But developers mostly aren't going back to their old tech. They'd rather port down. And it does make business sense, because it's cheaper.
