1 - If Sony would work on speeding up their browser they wouldn't need a Facebook app.
One of the few flaws of the PS3.

I don't think the inclusion of the FB app has anything to do with that, though faster net is something Sony should look into.

On the 360, you need a gold membership (which requires payment) in order to use the FB feature. Sony are clearly only adding it because the PSN is free: they are basically trying to 1up MS in regards to community features.

yeah... even i think the browser should be more solid. i use PS3 to browse most of the time. who does not want to browse on a HD tv.. q:

but i don't mind FB integration. i don't mind Yahoo chat too. more reasons for me not to switch on my already crippled computer.

I rather the work on adding features to make online gaming better or easier. The PSN is great but could be better. Facebook is a good addition but most people want more for PSN like Cross Game Chat.

I doubt it's because of the browser . they just integrated it , since people seems to think it's an edge on the other side , and like to pretend it's a service that's worth paying access for ...

Let me guess, next year when Microsoft announces Hulu integrated into the Dashboard, it would be worthless and pointless as the PS3 "has a browser", until a month or 2 later when it's announced for PS3!? It seems the PSN is always a step behind XBL but don't worry, whatever Microsoft implements, rest assured Sony will play follow the leader and implement months later. Sony's strategy for PSN is basically, "let's see what Microsoft does and do that". I'm really waiting for that one feature that's added to PSN that sets it apart from XBL, not "try to get it one step closer to being on par with XBL". Oh wait . . . it's free, right? Bring on the hate.

1.6 - @solidt12......Just out of curiosity, is "cross game chat" the only feature that you feel PSN is lacking?
I'm just curious on your take.

What else do you want out of PSN that you feel it is lacking in?

Seriously who wants facebook on the xmb? I'd really be pissed off if a facebook icon clutters my xmb. Hopefully this rumor is gonna stay that way.

So you're complaining about the app?

It's certainly a feature I will probably never use,

But you're not going to hear me complain that it's there......not for free.

I'm not complaining about the app. I'm reflecting on the attitudes of fanboys. Microsoft does a lot to try to make social networking of it's community easier and they take many risks and take a lot of criticisms for it; Netflix and Facebook are a few examples. It seems when these features are added to PSN there always seem to be some way of justifying it and the justification usually is, it's free. Sony has to take a step towards leading, not playing catch up. Offer users something XBL doesn't. As much as they want to retract, it's clear HOME is no longer a priority and it was the one thing they really were innovating with.

Sony- anything you can do I can do better!
XBL losing value every day, how can they still get away with charging? Cross game chat is the ONLY reason?

1.13 - Ok...
Speaking as a PS3 owner and fan, I implore the other PS3 fans to NOT be hypocrites and say this is a great addition to the XMB after saying it's a useless feature and ragging on XBL for it. The XMB doesn't NEED Facebook, it's a useless feature especially since the PS3 has a web browser. This feature is a waste of time and money. And you all know it's true, so don't pretend that now that Sony has it on the XMB that it's suddenly a great feature.

http://www.gamesindustry.bi... facebook IS confirmed. I know it already had a browser so this point is moot but this should once again devalue the proce of GOLD 360 subscribers now all the pay for twitter and erm....? £50 a year for twitter YAY!

My main excitment came from this announcement "Facebook integration, the ability to change your gamercard colors and more are coming to PlayStation 3." Gamercard customization on your PS3 is gonna be cool and using your facebook photos as avatars is a rumour! meaning you can in theory have anything for free! Unlike MS charging you. You can even have in theory if true A Master Cheif Avatar.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But IMO it doesn't matter WHEN you announce something. It only matters when you deliver it. MS might have announced Facebook back at E3, but if Sony brings their FW before MS then that will be quite embarrassing.

Trust me, I agree with you 100%. I don't have a facebook account and I won't be making one any time soon. I am only excited to hear about this because it is just one more reason why XBL is a waste of money. Any features at all that the PS3 steals from XBL gold is a win for us and a loss for them. I seriously don't understand how people are willing to pay for XBL.

2 - Facebook integration will be good!
I think FB integration to XMB will be good... Although PS3 has a web browser, and it works good most of the time, however, still there are lot of stupid people who can not use PS3 browser with an ease. FB integration should be somehow linked to the games status, picture uploads, and browsing etc.

Sony is working on a webapps for PS3, where developer can develop apps based on (HTML 5 + AJAX + Flash) technologies - very similar to iphone apps.

It is so exciting to see that this generation has lot competition and therefore lot of innovations come up, which benefits to customers in the end. The only problem is when companies try to use their $$$ to put down their competitor. Of course this does not exclude Sony or Nintendo, but Microsoft is really worse in this game. I hope they didn't make any $$$ agreement with facebook like netflix to block PS3...

Webapps is gonna rocks and they are gonna be PS3 only as MS would never allow there "walled garden" to allow something like them. It seems this is Sonys replacement for Linux.

My bet is that Facebook+Netflix+Cross chat is their master plan for the holidays . With already a lot of good exclusives and those options it would be hard to justify , besides platform or exclusive preferences , getting a 360 over it then .

I agree we could use it on the browser if they improved but the app saves us the troubles and you know what? I will not complain

I suppose it's better than nothing, but there are other features Sony could implement.

Not even big ones either-- how hard is it to make trophy leaderboards for example.

6 - Don't really see it that important.
I mean, how many people you think will trade the "management" of their facebook from the pc to ps3? Well, I thing very very few people will do it.

I, personaly, don't even use that app, aswell as other related like hi5 and so.

Like someone said above, I'd rather see ps3 browser improved although I don't use that often.

8 - This is where the competition benefits the gamers
Sony has done a lot of things with the PSN to respond to MS Live implementations, trophies is an example. I like to see Sony up in their toes to counter act to MS moves, this is good for the business.

8.3 - How is this good?
It's just Sony's turn to copy something the 360 did. The both of them are just playing catch up with each other. What would be REALLY good is if Sony would be proactive instead of reactive. Implement a feature that the 360 DOESN'T have, think about the future and implement new features the 360 isn't going for but that people would love. This "Oh the 360 has netflix so the PS3 should too" or "FACEBOOK FOR TEH XMB IZ TEH PWNZORS, COMPETISHUN FTW!!!" is lame.

You don't get it, do you ?

Sony is trying to push on MS by having what they have just to let people know you don't have to pay to get those things.

@CimmerianDrake Sony give you all this free MS charges you its not about catch up I mean sure you could say Sony are copying MS but MS copy Sony they both take the best ideas from each other it's good business sense and its needed in the modern day market. However like I said Sony give it you free and if Sony give you EVERYTHING MS gives you but free MS will find it really hard to get people to fork out their live subscriptions every year.

The only thing I don't want to see is the XMB cluttered up with constant flavour of the month applications, only for people to move on to something else.
Which we all know they will,Myspace anyone?

That's funny I thought that the PS3 already had access to facebook through its browser.

Mind you that's what browser are for. So there's nothing new here. However for anyone that is looking for a more streamlined version on their PS3, then I guess it's good for them.

I see it as sony and microsoft hitting on the women. Think about how many girls like to game and they have to share a system with their brothers. I know for a fact 3 of my female friends on the PS3 and 360 will use this feature like crazy. I'm not a big fan of it, but teen girls and young women are BIG fans of FB and Twitter. So it's a good move for those two as far as sales.
