Modern Warfare 2: PS3 vs. PC comparison HD

Take a look at this batch of Modern Warfare 2 comparison screens that show the PC and PS3 versions of Infinity Ward's potential Game of the year. All the shots were taken with a professional grabbing system in 720p, with both Full RGB and Superwhite enabled on the PS3. The PC screens have been taken in highest settings with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 (scaled down to 1280 x 800 for comparison)

Which version do you prefer?

Looks identical. But then again, I am not looking at the screen shots through fanboy glasses like the 360 fans.

PS3 = PC = 360. Good for Infinity Ward for doing it again.

PC version looks too crisp?
You do realise it's running at a higher resolution right?

The smoothed out slightly faded look of the PS3 is what makes it look worse than the 360 version which is a bad thing but you compare it to the PC and all of a sudden it's a good thing?

edit: the PC version was running at a lower res?
I'm not too keen on these comparisons since you can't properly compare the two without knowing what effects are running on PC.

Unlike it's PC-ish counterpart, the 360, the PC will always have superior graphics due to the fact that you could have the same gaming PC with changeable parts such as the graphics card and update when the latest one comes out.

But that is both a strength and a weakness.

-I'd still buy the ps3 version-

Now they've really screwed up! It is difficult to tell those apart! The PS3 actually has more junk littered about in some shots.

The PC community should be really upset!

Question; Did it ever occur to anyone that when developers make the game, they keep the fact that most PS3 owners have RGB turned on full, and that if they made the game for the limited range, the game wouldn't look as good on the PS3 full range? People who are incapable of putting the RGB to full probably have a television where the difference would be unnoticeable. As I have a Wega and a Bravia, and the Wega always looks washed out! This is in reference to the PS3 vs 360 comparisons where they use the out of box settings.

1.15 - Here's what I see
This game was dumb downed for consoles so the PC version doesn't look any different from the console versions beyond higher resolution it seems. That being said, I like how the particle effects on the ps3 look better (in the flames). That's just an opinion and doesn't construe the ps3 version being better

Good thing Iron Sheik posted a link that proves me right, so I wouldn't have to do it if Thanatos decided to man up and try and prove me wrong.

Only thing that's sad is your fanboyism! I posted a good topic of discussion, with no fanboyism involved and didn't even say anything bad about any console. I even backed it up with the basis for my opinion, which is having two televisions, one that supports RGB and one that doesn't!

I'm not even buying this game, like I never bought the last one or any COD ever; So I don't even care, all versions can suck if they want!

@The Woopiman: All PC games are dumbed down for consoles. That is why there are stark differences between PC exclusives(Crysis) and multiplats. That is why I feel sorry for the PC community; All that money for upgrades and the best they can get is higher resolutions!

PC version obviously has higher res textures and better particle effects and I'm sure shown at their highest resolutions the difference would be rather obvious.

But that's no disrespect to the console (PS3 in this case) versions, they all look great especially when you consider they're running at a good 60FPS, something people seem to forget when they compare it to other console games running at 30.

5 - Poor comparison
The whole point of Pc gaming is that you can turn up the resolution and the anti aliasing and filtering. So in this comparison, they scale PC to a low resolution, and have NO AA enabled clearly. Errr why??

PC version looks massively superior on a 1080P HDTV. This is a fact of life. On consoles the game is running a pathetic 1024 x 600 with just 2 x AA. On a full HDTV its a blurry mess, foggy and muddy from being upscaled more than THREE TIMES to fit the screen.

Really its difficult to explain the massive difference unless you see it first hand. Considering 50 pounds worth of graphics card like an 8800GT will max this, and manage to run it 1920 x 1080 4 x AA you have an idea of the gap between console and Pc better. You could match the console settings like for like with a low end card and still have more resolution. Easily.

5.1 - You're right
Whoever disagrees has never played a pc game.
I would like to see the honest comparison instead of scaling back the pc version to give PS3 a chance.
1920x1080 at 4xaa or 8xaa (PC)
vs the 1024x600 at 2xaa (PS3)
and I would like to see the video too, showing frame rates.
120+ fps (pc) vs 30fps, or maybe 60? (PS3).

Only difference I can see is more lighting effects on guns and certain other models from the PC version (bloom effects, I suppose). There's also more foliage in some of the shots. But that's about it. They did a good job ensuring it looks the same across platforms, but I actually wish they'd take advantage of the respective platforms' capabilities, as opposed to playing the "safe card" and hedging their bets.

11 - Seriously
For a PC game, this looks like trash.
But then again, they REALLY scaled back the resolution for this comparison.
But the shadows, and shaders look terrible (for a pc game).
Still better than the PS3...but geeze guys. A little effort.

PS3 is probably blurry from a mix of sub 1080p resolution and the fact a lot of picture quality is almost always lost when taking screenshots from consoles. Hence the PS3 screenshots appear blurry.

The PC screenshots are obviously taken at a low resolution with no AA, which is why it looks "too crisp" to some people by comparison.

Resolution, AA and AF aside, the only differences I see here are slightly different geometry and vegetation LOD biases/values.

They are very good devs. Game looks great on all platforms. Even though I'm not a huge fan of COD series I always pick up thier games because I know what I'm getting, and that's a solid fun game.

14 - shows how little love the PC got
Its an old engine, and even with my PC elitest glasses I could barely tell the diffrence.

this just shows the PC was a port of the consoles, and they didnt want to put more love into it.

IWnet; no servers
no mods
no graphical improvements for those with better hardware.

I really wonder why they thought PC users would buy this?

your right about what little love they have for PC ( even though PC made them successful) and that its the same engine as CoD: 2 may be CoD.

"this just shows the PC was a port of the consoles, and they didnt want to put more love into it."

The game is made on Computer (the same as PC) then ported to consoles.

"no servers" there will be dedicated server whether IW support it or not.
"no mods" it is impossible for the game to be mod free.

"no graphical improvements for those with better hardware"

This comparison was most likely done at 1024 by 768P (4:3 aspect ratio) or 1280 by 720P (16:9) on medium setting with 2xAA or No AA

Should of been 2560 by 1600P with highest setting with 16xQ AA and AF x 16 minimum.

I really wonder why they thought PC users would buy this?

well there is hundreds of thousands of people on steam at the moment playing or waiting for the Digital version to be released.

It should be 2560 by 1600P (16:10) on highest setting with 16xQ AA and AF x 16

That's a real comparison, all games maxed on all platforms.

I want to see the PC version at 7680 by 1600P (48:10) with 16xQ AA on ATI Eyefinity or 2560 by 1600p (16:10) with 16xQ AA forced by Nvidia control panel.

Scaled back gimp shots, the jaggies are everywhere plus CoD: 2 looks just as good in comparison to these screens

Those PC screens look like crap. They must be playing on a three years old entry level Dell system. Where is the high res and AA screens? This is Call of Duty we're talking about here, most gaming PCs can play this game completely maxed up with all the trimmings at over 100 FPS.
