Nintendo is a bigger risk taker than Microsoft or Sony

Nintendo is one of those companies that refuses to bog down no matter how tough the times are or no matter how difficult the predicament. Dominating the scene with the NES...

That is true. Just look at the Wii. Nintendo could've went under, if the audience didn't catch on.

@ above

Nintendo doesn't have a freebie marketing (razor blade) business strategy where you lose money on consoles and make it up on software. Nintendo makes profit from the get go. Nintendo still would not have "went under" even if the Wii hadn't struck the chord it has with the non-customer.

@1.1 agreed.
Nintendo has being playing it 'safe' all the way.
With farming old IPs with their popularity.
Though the console was 'innovative', hence the risk.. there were no really financial risks involved.

I agree with Product. Nintendo wasn't in danger of going all Sega on us. They have a firm base of titles that a certain number of people buy their consoles for. They could've done exactly what Sony and Microsoft did, ended up in third place again, and still would've survived.

What I find funny are the people who choose to get pissed now at Nintendo for stuff that they've always done.
There are always big delays in Zelda games (and a LoZ release is always a rare occurrence by industry standards).
Mario is always in a bunch of mascot games.
Nintendo consoles have always had better first-party games than third-party ones.

But now since Nintendo is on top of the "console wars," they get the most hate. It comes with the territory, I guess. Sony got a lot of crap last gen that they didn't deserve, either.

Anyway...was the Wii a risk? Sure. But I don't think it was as big a risk as others make it out to be. If motion controls didn't catch on, they just would've gone back to the drawing board.

How to put an old gamecube tech with a new controller in a single package is called "Risk"? come on the Wii cant even output 720p. It's being sold for a profit since day one and "Ninty" has made billions. I bet you to make games for the Wii is extremely cheap and even so, a Wii game cost around $50. Not to mention the lack of first party quality titles. Absolute zero risk.

Sony priced the PS3 a lot lower than its manufacturing cost, in return they lost billions, while on the other hand Nintendo came up with a last gen hardware with gimicky controls then priced it higher than its manufacturing cost, so yes Nintendo is a great risk taker /sarcasm.
I think Nintendo has a good business strategy but definitely not a bigger risk taker than MS or Sony.

I am sorry what? Wasn't it Nintendo that wasn't ready accept CD has the new format and wanted to stick with the catridges back in N64 days? Besides of the motion tech, what has Nintendo done to innovate stuff? No, sorry, not going to fall for this. Nintendo is not a risk taker and by all means, they should start taking risks now. They can learn a thing or two from Sony. First CD, then DVD, now BluRay. Sony takes risks. A bunch of new IPs combined with the old ones, they have a huge library. The first thing that you Nintendo reminds you of is Mario or Pokimon and that's it!

@Evil,
Even though they could have survived, their reputation would go to hell.
Even though " hardcore " gamers claim they dont like Nintendo anymore, everyone would just say they failed hard, even the Nintendo fans.

" They can learn a thing or two from Sony. First CD, then DVD, now BluRay. Sony takes risks. "

Thats not a risk, its an instant success, even if it wouldn't sell on the console it would still sell with standalone players.

On top of that to developers Discs are relatively cheap to them.

Sony has been doing it for 3 generations now, how is that a risk?
They know what they are doing.

If i recall correctly the reason Nintendo didnt go with CD's was due the whole mess between them and Sony( aand Phillips..)...and i think they didnt want loading times.

(Btw going over budget is not a risk, its just stupid, just so you know XD)

Lol krazy Ken got fire for the risks and failure that you now call the ps3 then a well respected buisness book was wrote about how not to be Sony.

Motion controls where a risk because no one backed them eve factor 5 left them. That just proves you should not listen to fanboys.

While g4and other people went hd happy nintendo catered to the new comers and people that left gaming. Notoriouly the hardest to sell games to or gimmicks. Then they constantly go against what the hd crowd wants lol. They may also be the only company with a new console coming out.

It is a lot riskier to not ride the gfx whore train and give into the fps zombie gamer syndrome.

Nintendo only can lose consumers, but if we talk about the console as a commercial product, no way, they make money with every console sold and make more profit with First Party software, just take a look at these:

·Super Smash Bros. Melee (7.09 million)
·Super Mario Sunshine (5.5 million)
·Mario Kart: Double Dash‼
·The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
·Luigi's Mansion
·Animal Crossing
·Mario Party 4
·Metroid Prime
·Mario Party 7
·Pokémon Colosseum

SSB Melee is the best seller game on GC, even the RE exclusives (REø- REmake - RE4 timed) couldn't sell as much as the first party games, N fanbase always expect those franchises but gamers expect more than that, that's why the only thing N lose always are consumers

You will see my point when the N console comes out and the "oh Revolutionary motion Control" Crap it'll be already established as Standard (sadly)

HA! this article comes from wii4gamerz.tk lol

I don't agree. I will always respect Nintendo because they were a big part of my childhood, but I think it is pretty obvious that Nintendo takes the fewest risks of the three console manufacturers. They stick close to their few core franchises (Mario, Zelda, Metroid), the don't really invest in much new IP, their consoles have very conservative specs and design, they were the last to get on the online bandwagon, etc, etc.

Microsoft came into this industry when there were two strongly established players...that was risky. Creating a unified online gaming service for consoles had never been done before and certainly carried with it some risk. New IPs like Gears of War, Crackdown, Alan Wake and Fable also shows more risk taking that Nintendo has done with their games. Powerful, but expensive hardware that they originally have to take a loss on, with the plan that they will eventually become profitable through game sales and reduced production costs on the hardware side is also risky.

Sony, too, takes a lot of risks. New IPs; new disc formats; feature-rich, but expensive hardware; Home; Etc. Sony has taken some of the biggest risks over the years.

I think that Sony and Microsoft have taken the most risks to push gaming forward. On the other hand, back in the 80s Nintendo brought gaming back from the grave and for that I will always have respect for Nintendo.

Man do I hope ms and Sony listen their fans and do every thing they say next gen. I really do because experienced gamers have been here before. Yeah the xbox is going to be like the dreamcast next gen. Only ms money will keep the zombie green machine running and more poeple are pissed off by the hyped hd games than any thing else.

Hey but you guys are not using logic you want nintendo to fail simply because they STILL make games that kids like also. You see most of you don't hate nintendo you just don't want to relive your youth or loose your respect. Well just know you gain nothing online and it makes things worst to see you guys act so lame when it is not nintendo that holds you back. People will respect you reguardless of what you play you guys do realize this right.

Man imagine if all those adults came online just to dump on your hd consoles? Hey but what adult would do that? Only imature people do that.

I'll enjoy what I enjoy and these hardcore will eventually leave gaming once it is not cool. Which is the deffinition of a fad. I mean do you notice how ms petrock is better than sony's? Yet they will both stall the same way the xbox currently is because they both lack traditional console games.

At this point it would be better to have a platformfor all 3rd parties with out a 1st party one console yet that would be a pc. Isn't that ms main goal?

Lol pc are at the door and they want their adult gamers back.

Also you guys don't hate nintendo you hate sharing with kids lol.

Nintendo actually didn't take that big of a risk because they intentionally under-produced the Wii during launch. That's why there was a major shortage. All of the ones in the shops were sold out, and this increased demand. As supply decreases, demand increases based on the psychological reasoning that a rare product is a good product. Nintendo probably didn't manufacture a lot of Wiis from the get-go because they didn't want to be stuck with a bunch of consoles in case the Wii didn't catch on. The real risk takers are the companies that mass-produce their products from the beginning with the confidence that the quality of the product alone will sell it, not its rarity.

Luckily they have FAAANNNBOOOY!!! to save the day. FAAANNNBOOOY!!! will defend sending a console in five times for repair! FAAANNNBOOOY!!! stands up for truth of knowing it will break after the 3year warranty, and they will have to repurchase(no option for repair, since it will just break again in 3 mos).

Not only that, but FAAANNNBOOOY!!! will risk everything recommending shoddy merchandise to their friends and loved ones! WTF is that!

Sony released a $600 console with an unproven format (Blu-Ray) and hardware that was almost too powerful for developers to handle.

Microsoft released a console with no HDD and launched it knowing it had failure problems to begin with just to get out before Nintendo and Sony.

Nintendo..... releases enhanced games from the 1980s that were already popular, and tries to appeal to an audience much bigger than theirs (non-gamers).

I think out of the three, Sony and Microsoft risked the most. All Nintendo did was release something that either did well or not. They flopped with Virtual Boy, so doing something like that is nothing new. They just got lucky this time. Risks.....

well with what i knowb(only nintendo's side. never owned a psp, ps1/2/3, or xbox/360) the way they changed their handheld ,gameboy, to the touch-screen gem that is the DS it was a risk changing the formula....but, they werent sure if it wud succeed so they said it was a seperate item no a gba2 persay. so they took a risk making it touch screen but still took the safe way saying gb wasnt dead...yet that is until the ds was became a money printer. i mean thats why they added the gba backwards compatibility (to be a 'backup plan') with the dsi it was already proven that ds sells so they didnt include gba slot DUH

Well lets start in the beginning. There wouldnt even be a video game market if Nintendo didnt take a risk and release the NeS after the Atari crash, Analog sticks are thanks to Nintendo, cant have dual analog without analog first. They gave us Rumble too. Oh and touch Screen gaming, and motion sensing gaming which is so gimmicky that Sony is falling over itself to copy it in almost every way.

Now that isnt to say that Sony doesnt take risk. they used their PS fanbase to push a movie format through, they risked their audience going somewhere else andm most did but thankfully they have millions of uninformed gamers who had no problem supporting a movie format that did nothing for games.

Don't give credit to Sony for things they didnt do though kids. Cd and DVDs were used by PCs. All Sony did was copy that.Seems many SowhiNY supporters think copying is innovating. Sad really but then again they buy movie players for consoles and think Rumble is a last gen feature until Sony puts it out for 60.00 then they rush out to buy it.

7.2 - Hey
One thing, before Sony, DVds weren't that popular, in Japan, ppl heard about the PS2, but watching dvd movies was something absolutely new to them, and it was a real selling point for Sony, and the DVD format was also used for big budget games.... Controllers were pressure sensitive. And u have to thank Sony because the eyetoy is also based on motion sensing if u didn't know... If that was a technology Sony copied, then nintendo copied touch screen from cellphone companies, and analog sticks from arcades and Atari, Sony may have copied it, but made it better by having 2 analog sticks and rumble technology built in only one controller, nintendo only had the rumble separated!!!!

Microsoft first attempt for online gaming on consoles started with Sega Net for dreamcast, and now it is better known as Xbox Live for both xbox and 360, even that they screwed up with the hardware, at least they make good software.... Sega risked more than nintendo, even that Sega went bankrupt.... Only thing that's saving Nintendo mostly is Mario, then they bring their other good franchises, most of nintendo games are low budget like wiisports but they're money printers, Without Miyamoto, Nintendo is lost!!!! I agree Nintendo brought the market back after Atari, but Sony and Microsoft made the Market more extreme and popular, at the level of Hollywood film companies!!!!

Why oh Why, That's 3 paragraphs of truth and obviously you are just upset and crying because you cant prove ANY of it wrong.

Tito08, Dude, systems had motion controls all the way backto 2600. Eyetoy proves nothing. Why is Sony copying the basic design of the Wii remote if the EyeToy is it? Because it isnt and obviously you do not know what you are tlaking about. Also Analog sticks came about around the time of the N64, the ones used by arcade games are not analog.

Take 10 minutes to go learn what you are talking about then come back and see how wrong you are.

Lol at fanboys. Adult gaming as you call it still is not cool actualy it has made even the gamers who are hardcore enough not to care what others think respect these gamers less. You know the ones should be playing pcs rather than consoles. I have never meet a girl or relative that thought hd gaming was for adults.

The only console accepted by adults right now is the wii. If my gamer friends come over the vc console along with Sam show down collect demon blade and nmh etc has no problem entertaining them. Yet when others or women come over they have no problem with wii fit or resort.

Yet if some one has to watch you struggle threw an HD game they mostly don't even want to play it next. I don't even see people trying out hd games in public any more it really is sad.

Yet nothing is lamer than the fanboys online right now. They can't even admit they don't like consoles. I'm sorry all of my friends love the vc and what the wii does and it is only the you get fanboys that need gaming to be justified and protected by them.

Look at it, if Atari came with motion sensing, so that means Nintendo copied from them, and don't say that Eyetoy proved nothing cause it really did.... See project Natal, Even Hideo Kojima got excited about it... Nintendo is a great company, but they don't innovate on everything, so please get ur facts straight.... Natal is motion sensing, so that means Eyetoy is also motion sensing.... They make the same games, low budget while the others make new franchises, third party games are making new franchises, high budget, not like nintendo where 95% of third party games are basically wack and doesn't sell, only nintendo titles 1rst party tittles sells....

With Sony and Microsoft, both parties sells, Nintendo doesn't support 3rd parties as much as Sony and Microsoft does, and yeah, u're right about the analogs, but is it N64 controller dual-analog and rumble like the dualshock, I don't think so....

If Motion sensing came from Atari 2600, how come Nintendo brings that idea back 20 years later????

Yeah Sony has done its part, but that what you talk about is not as pretty as you make it out to be.

Soda you are on the money there. With out an new optical format that peopl want Sony is dead in the water. On top of that they pushed the half backed cell on to programmers hoping this would support lame blu rays and keep devs from porting to the xbox. Lol new comers forget we wanted cd player before ps 1 we wanted DVD player before ps2 but no one needed blu Ray and we still don't. And if we do need we are adult enough to buy a real player.

I don't know many people that though the ps3 was worth it's price then or now simply because it is not wanted including their games. Yet their fans still love these games. I'm sorry Sony is an ok addition to gaming yet they will never be the reason I play video games simply because they don't understand what real gamers want. This is why ms a new comer can steal their thunder because they never really had any thing to keep them on top.

Once ms learns from nintendo only then will gaming get better becuase Sony is only here to milk the hardcore. They have made this very obvious.

I think that it was the DS v PSP sales comparison that would have encouraged Nintendo to create the Wii. Although hisotry actually showed that any handheld was very unlikely to sell more than a Nintendo handheld, the PSP would have had the best shot at it purely because there are so many PS2 gamers. But maybe it's partly because the PSP seems so close in screenshots to the PS2 that more people didn't see the need to get one. The Wii, on the other hand, does clearly have better graphics than the DS. So Nintendo concentrated on showing this quite retro NES family gaming philosophy - nothing to shock the traditional non-gamers (or people who hadn't played for ages) that it was trying to capture - it basically seemed to want to show them that gaming hadn't really changed that much since the days of Pacman. They belatedly reaped the rewards of creating the Gamecube system, that relatively underperformed in sales, by selling a Gamecube version 1.5.
