Why?

TheSixthAxis: 'Every once in a while I lose faith in gaming. There isn't any particular reason, I can only assume it's because I'm male and, as a result of my penis, have a fear of commitment to anything. When I say 'lose faith' I don't mean 'fuck the industry', I mean more like 'what in the point of this?'.
Have you ever considered your gaming habit – I mean really considered it? Let me outline it for you.'

I've questioned why ive spent all the hours ive put into gaming, but then i thought "what the hell else do i have to do, work...fvck that". It is a money consuming hobby but most are, if you really only play a game maybe once or twice then you should be renting games and not buying them. Usually I only buy gasmes right when they come out if they have great multiplayer or it is something i just cant wait to get my hands on (GoW3).

1.1 - Thats the way it goes...
Been playing games since I was about 5 years old, now i'm 30.

As time goes on, you tend to appreciate a bit of originality in your games, something that really engages your interest. I mean to say I started FPS gaming on Wolfenstein, been through Half-Life, Doom, Quake, Unreal etc etc. Eventually it grinds on you, picked up COD5:World at War the other day, it was ejected from my PS3 about 10 minutes later...*yawn*

Your interest in gaming will peak and dip over time but its something you will never truly fall out with. Fallout 3 pretty much made me lose a week of my life, something a game hasn't managed to do since Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES about 15 years ago!

I too sort of lost that spark that I used to have in my tweeny days. I remember always buying games day 1 very anxious of playing the game in one full session. I just recently bought KZ2 and I've only played 2 levels. That was like a month ago. I don't know why really. Guess I found other finer things in life than staring at a TV screen all day.

This can be said about anything. How often do you read the same book more than once or watch the same movie more than 3 times. Even buying a new car that you love you'll end up just thinking its a car in a few weeks, the novelty wears off and the feeling of i've already done/seen this sets in. That's what gives multiplayer its replay value cause of humans unpredictability you never for sure know the outcome. Not saying playing the single player over is pointless/boring, but nothing can beat the nostalgia of the first time you played through it or achieved something.

I started gaming in the mid 80's and up till High School I maintained a constant enjoyment of various genres of games. I bought all the new systems on Day1 and anxiously waited outside stores for the newest games.

Now I'm in my late 20's and I pretty much only engage in RPGs when it comes to consoles and FPS/RTS for PC.

8 - I look at it this way:
Some guys spend their time watching football, or riding motorcycles, etc. I play video games. At the end of the day, that football game has been watched, that motorcycle has been ridden, that video game has been played, and we have all enjoyed the time we spent doing something that could be called pointless.

This applies to everything in life. Not to sound too cynical but it is all pretty pointless.

I think the author needs to start renting games. I play alot of games I would never buy and if I don't like them, they go back in the mail within a day or so.

I just looked back at my rental history and counted 32 games rented in the last 12 months. I have a 3 game plan for $30.00/month and rent games for the whole family (we have all the consoles and handhelds in the house). That amounts to $360.00 in rental expenses. If I had bought those 32 games and let's say the average price was $50.00/game, it would have cost me $1600.00.

If I do want to keep any of them, the "keep it" price is very reasonable.

I also have no qualms about getting a game and returning it the next day if it is a stinker.

12 - this might be my last gen of TRUE gaming
right now it seems like im going through a mid gaming life crisis. I dont think ill have the energy to put in or as much time when this gen ends. Im enjoying it now whilst i still have the drive but the flip side is my kids like gaming and will probably love gaming kinda keeping me in the loop. We'll see anyhow Im more than happy with what the ps3 is giving me at the moment....i left pc gaming while back so this will probably be my encore.... it kinda worries me:(

That's how I sorta felt with last gen. This gen has some amazing games, but the heavy emphasis on realism, and shooters sorta turns me off this gen. Even the PS3 has this problem, but not as badly as the other console. I personally am just taking gaming at short burst these days, as that is as much as I can give for now.

Mate, I'm in my late thirties(and no that DOESN'T mean I'm 40 next time up!)and what you said seems so much like I felt a couple of years ago.

My kids were too young(overall) to do much gaming with them and took up so much of my leisyre time that I rarely found a game suitable to those pooped out private moments at the end of the evening. The PC would need buying into shape for Crysis(and I THOUGHT future releases-like a fool!)and my PS2 was at the edge of dying while the xbox existed on a diet of Halo2 and scraps-don't ask about how I felt about the GC at that point!

Thing is, though, as the kids get bigger and less demanding in time terms(or at least more manageable in general), start gaming themselves AND start playing real sports while you play less the table turns. Sure, you might never return to the heights of onsession from your younger days but I, at least, started enjoying things a lot more when I could both game with the kids and then with the missus and mates after they'd finished, gone out or gone to bed.

I play R&C,SMG,LBP and even, if I've had a beer or two, Singstar with the kids these days and opften pass the pad on campaigns in shooters/actioners with the older two. My eight year old and I play all sorts of RPGs these days as well-helps his reading loads and got me back into a genre I thought I'd never have the time for again and as I'm with him I feel safe enough playing a few which he wouldn't be old enough for alone(not meaning 18s or anything but I can edit 12 or 15 games for him or explain anything iffy and besides anything risque goes over his head!).

So don't get to down about it as things often turn around without you thinking. Honestly-even when I vecame too ill to work the gaming community and such like was a big help. Have some downtime from, it-just don't write it off as it can find it's own way back into your life in unexpected ways.

13 - Gaming
It's a hobby. There's no real point to it. It helps and hurts in different ways.

I play games like I watch a movie or I go swimming, skateboarding, socializing, etc. It's all to keep me sane and out of the "work is life and life is work" mentality. Money is a lot (and I mean, A LOT) of things, but not everything. Therefore, gaming is my way of keeping the idea of constantly doing something in life that will get me somewhere, and putting it in my pocket for a later time.

My gaming state of mind has changed these days. With video games getting more expensive and innovative titles being rarer on retail, I sometimes wonder what to do? The closest library of titles reminiscent of the PS one era are on PSN, but I'm still not quite warmed up to exclusive online purchasing just yet. I find my gaming life at a current standstill, as I look back at the past two generations when gaming actually held more meaning. The emphasis on realism, "badassery", and shooters in general wasn't that heavy then. Titles like Jumping flash, and Tomba were aplenty.

One of the best things this guy should do for now is, perhaps, rent more games, and if you really like that particular title then buy it. Demos help as well, but there aren't to many demo titles for downloadable games it seems.

its probly because its a progressive industry, i dont meen to generalise but it seems most of us buy a game and less than a week latter a new one comes out so we drop the old one and move on and then less than a week later again another game comes out, its a continues pattern but without this pattern the gaming industry would grind to a halt because no one would be making anything new, unfortunatly this does leave us with some games never being completed but we can usualy find some borring part in the year to finish them, as for getting to the point of being bored with gaming it may have alot to do with generic games, it can be said that once youv played one FPS youv played them all, obviously this isnt entirly true but alot of games can seem like the same old thing over and over again, however i do know when i play a very unique and fun game that all my enthusiam and excitement for gaming comes back.
