Carmack Briefly Discusses Rage and DOOM 4 during Podcast Interview

Eh, Carmack was interviewed not long after the PS3s release and when he was asked which console was more powerful he deflected by saying that they were about equal in power and that the PS3 only had a higher theoretical performance that he didn't think would be reached. He also commented on his thoughts about why the PS3 was made more difficult to develop for. Initially, I used this guy as a reference for many of my defensive arguments for the 360 being as powerful as the PS3. Now, I am disillusioned. How could this guy be so wrong? It reminds of the time Ben Stein (acclaimed economist and monotonous teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off) was asked about how sub-prime mortgages could affect the economy in the coming years (and he was asked this like a year before the crisis) and he said that we had nothing to worry about, that sub-prime mortgages were a "small blip" in the market and that the stocks would rise very high by the next year. It just goes to show that even an expert in his field can make mistakes.

So PS3 get's two good looking games in 2009 and all of a sudden it's more powerful? Sorry but there's still no proof Carmack was wrong and I'm sure soon enough he will be correct when it's said and done. Reach and Alan Wake will both be 2 very pretty games.

I'm sure Alan Wake and Reach will be pretty but how pretty, sure Alan wake is looking impressie but it's not KZ2 impressive nor Uncharted 2 impressive and no that doesn't make the PS3 more powerful but it certainly does showcase that power very well.

Yo Lowcarb, I don't really want to argue about this. I have spent a fair share of my time saying that both consoles were about equal in power based on the statements of both Carmack and the guy who designed the hardware for both 360 and PS3. Still, I feel obligated to say that until Microsoft gets some proprietary game engines up and running, many people on this site are going to either concede or they're going to argue to the death that the PS3 is more powerful. I have no opinion on this matter except to say that I think Carmack was wrong about the theoretical peak performance not being reached. I think that Sony's ICE team is always looking for better ways to pull power from the SPUs, and if it's possible to have the Cell working in tandem with the RSX, then I see little to no reason for there to be bottleneck issues. The 360 is not a weak console, but it's not being tested correctly, and if it's true that it's physical make up causes it to fail, then I don't think developers will want to use its true performance lest it overheats.
