Console price cuts "not enough," EA says

TVGB: "During the company's fiscal Q2 earnings call earlier today, EA CEO John Riccitiello said the recent console price cuts, while driving hardware sales, are "not enough to get the industry back to flat software sales for the calendar year.""

excuse me mister 'just got rid of a third of our games in development to cut costs' how about you worry about your own company going back to it's old ways of nothing but yearly updates.

I think consoles should be free, you know you should be able to go into a store and pick one AND Sony, MS, NTD should give us 100$ so we can buy ONLY EA games....ahh you know what make it 200$. I wonder if that would make EA and Activision happy OR should we ask for 300$ pffff tuff question....have to sleep on that one.

It might have been the consoles, before the price cuts, but it's your fault now. Stop producing sh!t and expecting people to gobble it up. I'll give you my money, if you give me a quality game.

4 - The legendary Bob Marley once sang.
"Give them an inch they take a yard. Give them a yard they take a mile. Once a man, and twice a child, and everything is just for a while, but is seems like total destruction is the only solution... Emmm... no use, no one can stop them now."

Real situation - Bob Marley.

OT:

I swear EA CEO John Riccitiello said the complete opposite a few month ago when the Slim launched, he praised the price drop and said this was the shot in the arm that the industry needed.

Go tell Microsoft and Nintendo to drop their prices more, Sony did their part and made their sacrifice for the industry...

The slim release and the subsequent price cuts didn't move the needle much in September and October so maybe he has a point. Software sales were still below expectations even though all the consoles had a bump in sales.

@StanLee

September PS3 slim sales were beyond expectations and octuber figures arent known yet. Probably is the xbox figures the one falling behind dont you think? or the Wii sales dropping continuously.

4.3 - The problem is not console prices, it's game prices.
This gen all games begin at $60 whether or not it's worth that much. Last gen games came in three prices, $50 for the AAA, $40 for average games, and $30 for "movie based games". This encouraged gamers to buy more games due to the "$100 mentality".

When we walk into the game store, we tend to semi-consciously assume we have a max of $100 to spend on gaming. At last gen prices we would likely buy 2 or more games and still walk away with change after taxes. Today, One game will set you back $65-$100 with ease, so we tend to purchase fewer games. Or like many gamers such as myself, we wait until the game is a few months old and just get a used copy for around $30 or less.

If publishers really want to get the industry running again, they are gonna have to start pricing games accordingly. If not, they will continue to sale 75%-50% of what they did last gen. Especially in this economy when everyone is much more prudent with their hard earned money.

8 - Rittecelo doesn't deserve to be compared to Kotick
Because he wants to revisit some of EA's old franchises?

Look, he and Kotick are NOT the same

Riccitiello GAVE the public NEW THINGS. He tried very hard to have his company innovate. Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Boom Blox ring a bell. Even now the new Madden is FINALLY worth something for once and not just simple rehash like past versions. And look at how he tried to have Need for Speed go in a new direction. This man worked HARD to make positive change within EA.

The problem is people haven't BOUGHT the games enough. Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, and Boom Blox didn't say anywhere near what they should have. And even Madden's sales number are oddly lower than they normally would be.

So can you REALLY blame him for wanting to make money and revisit older franchises. He tried to change EA for the better DURING a recession. People should have bought into innovation more. Don't blame the man for wanting to make some cash

KOTICK on the other hand ONLY wants to milk the customer dry and doesn't have ANY intention on innovating or progressing the industry

Those last years, I had started to like EA, kinda... but now... damn, does Riccitiello really need to act like Bobby Kotick ? 1500 people fired ? 1/3 of the games cancelled ? Focus on already known franchises... *sigh*

this dude is a total a$$hat......how about lowering the price of your games to what they should be...60 + bucks is way to much and stop crying about development costs, your team is an overbloated pig..You milk franchises to death, with incremental upgrades, BUT still charge full price...
its always the other dude...how frigging transparent this suit is

12 - Cut the price of games.
That would solve a lot of problems. 70 bucks a game is freaking ridiculous. Yet, the game giant wants more price cuts from the console guys, who cut the price down....weird!

Game publishers, Wada, Kotick and now this guy either just need to keep quite or say things where gamers can't hear them.

I tend to shy away from EA games when they release with a few exceptions like Dead Space & Dragon Age. Why? Because for the most part you know on day 1 there will be like 4 or 5 100KB unlock keys being sold on XBL & the PSN for content being withheld that I already paid for. So the way I see it is if you want to sell me 3/4 of a game, I will wait for the price of the game to come down so I can spend the extra money I save on the DLC to make it a complete game for my 60 bucks. What is it 10 bucks for the hard mode in Madden? GTFOOH with that!!

I also can get there games for like 20 bucks but it is only like every 2-3 months when the person I know goes out to the California HQs for company meetings.

15 - So let me get this straight...
You think consoles need to lower their prices and cut into profits even more for you to sell your product?

How about lowing your product price from $59.99 to $49.99 and making a better product and I guarantee you will make more profit.

Don't blame a bad economy or anything else except yourself.

Bottom line if people want your product, they WILL buy it.
MW2's sales figures pretty much prove that with the same economy and current console prices. ;)

I agree completely. Lower game prices if you want to increase sales, don't rely on hardware price cuts.

How about creating more quality games that people want to play? Why cancel a dozen games? Why buy out smaller companies so you (EA) end up having to support more employees?

Why lay off 1,500 people and turn around and donate $1 million to help jobless vets? You're throwing people out while trying to help people in the same situation! See the irony? How about the hypocrisy? That million dollars could've went towards better severance pay. EA wants to look good helping veterans but gives a bunch of people the shaft at the same time. Way to go!

I stated in another article that EA was evil and I got a bunch of disagrees, but the fact is, they're not doing anything to help the employees they already have. They're producing too many crappy titles to stay afloat. EA should break up into smaller separate companies and call it a day.

1) The vets thing is Activision

2) You cancel games that will probably not sell well because...well they won't sell well. If facebreaker 2 has to go so I can get more Dragon Age DLC then good on them.

3) You buy out smaller companies to gain assets like, IP, employee, and most of all money. Its the way the world works. The Bioware/Pandemic buy worked for them. The Playfish thing might too and get them more money to focus on their good games... old (sports titles) and new (Dead Space, Mass Effect and the like).

Ha, well I guess some jerkoff submitted an incorrect article. Funny thing is it was reported as a duplicate article, but was never reported for incorrect information. I read the story but was thinking EA the whole time because of whoever submitted that false article!

It is just a case of reality check. The game business had been in their economic bubble for while, but as the economy has reacted to all these bubbles, they are now deflating. For a while they felt insulated from what is happening to the world economy, but that was unrealistic. It was only a matter of time before entertainment oriented businesses will also feel the results of fewer dollars people have in their budgets to spend.

Not worth a penny more tbh.
