VGChartz Top 20 Original Soundtracks in Gaming (20-11)

VGChartz writes: "This was not an easy list to come up with. Indeed, what started off as a top 10 soon mushroomed into a top 20, and could have gone much higher still, but limit ourselves to 20 we have. It was certainly enjoyable though; listening to some of these soundtracks made us want to replay some of these often classic games."

I'm hoping to see Sonic the Hedgehog or Final Fantasy somewhere in the top 10.

Also, I doubt it will make it on this list at all, but the old Crash Bandicoot games had some memorable songs.

Starcraft, it's been years since I've heard that. Good good times.

Nice list so far though, curious to see #1.

I don't remember the Crash Bandicoot music really.

But I always say it for these articles. The game soundtrack that deserves recognition yet never gets it is Max Payne 2.

This sets the mood so perfectly for the game.

Videogame music is definitly a great art and it makes videogames themselves an even greater artform. It not only helps to keep you entertained and your adrenaline flowing... but for me it helps to imagine myself in those situations aswell.

QUAKE 2.

Enough said. Kill ratio made me wanna get up and shoot things outside of the game. The game's soundtrack tore my ears off my head when I first played it. Nowadays I tape them on the sides of my skull so they don't fall off. I blame Quake 2 for that though.

Too many awesome tracks in that game.

Quake 2, best soundtrack ever for a game. Ever! Here's a couple tracks.

Kill Ratio: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Descent into Cerberon: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Gravity Well: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Crashed up Again: http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Anywho. Best soundtrack to a game ever.

I would give the original Nightmare Creatures game the second place spot. Badass boss fight music..

Some of the old Commander & Conquer games had some sweet-ass tunes as well. But Quake 2 like I said, was the BEST.

Is anyone else with me when I say Castle Crashers deserves a spot on that list? Also, if Super Smash Bros Brawl is not in the top 3, then this list isn't valid. SSBB has music from pretty much every Nintendo game ever made, as well as Sonic and Metal Gear Solid.

Assassin's Creed had some great tracks. Flight Through Jerusalem was an amazing piece. Assassin's Creed 2 has some great ones from what I've heard so far. Jesper Kyd is amazing.

Shadow of the Colossus had one of the best soundtrack in gaming histoy IMO. In a game like that, music was a key element to envoke emotion, and it pulled it off perfectly.

Metal Gear Solid (specifically 3 and 4) had great stuff, too. The Love Theme from MGS4 still gives me chills, and playing through the microwave hallway with that song left me speechless. MGS3 had that wilderness vibe which fit the mood. And, of course, the infamous synth music from the original MGS can't be forgotten.

And last but not least, Mass Effect's soundtrack was very well made. The heavy focus on synths made the sci-fi vibe stick out like a sore thumb (which is a good thing). I hope to see that return in the next one.

9 - One of those topics not everyone will agree on but
pretty good list.

I'm surprised no "Symphony of The Night".

Also another good track from "Chrono Cross" - The Girl Who Stole The Stars

10 - Super Mario Galaxy & Banjo Kazooie Nuts 'n' Bolts
Both have just 'magical' soundtracks - the sort of thing that makes me wish they had the same music budget and console audio capabilities when the original games in the series were released.

I also would have thought Halo series would have been higher. No matter what your opinion on the games themselves, I don't think anyone can deny the composer Martin O'Donnell is incredibly talented in creating flowing, memorable themes that tie in beautifully with the action similar to John Williams' work in the Star Wars movies.

12 - my favorite soundtracks thus far:
in no particular order, of course

Shadow of the Colossus
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Chrono Trigger
Metal Gear Solid series( in particular 3 and 4)
Halo series (i may not care much for the games, but damn does it have a great musical score)
Uncharted series
Silent Hill 3 (the series soundtrack as a whole is great, but i really loved 3's soundtrack; maybe because it came with the game. lol)
Final Fantasy series (in particular FFX's main theme, despite me not caring much for X)

lots of great music soundtracks in games. it's one of the things that i think has progressed further than actual game design - as in, despite the constantly growing technology, gaming is still geared towards a very narrow demographic, mainly boys and men aged 15-35. musical scores in games, however, have expanded and grown exponentially, and, in my opinion, rivaling Hollywood (the soundtrack for Shadow of the Colossus is possibly one of the most moving soundtracks in gaming. of course, the MGS series is composed by Harry Gregson Williams, who has composed the scores for many a film).

i don't think gaming needs to be like movies in terms of inspiration, but i definitely think musical score is an area where film like presentation fits perfectly with game design. it's come a long way from synthesizers and 12 note mixes. lol.
