Infinity Ward Fans of "The Unit" or the Start of Artists Invading Videogames?

XE writes:

"Rapper 50 Cent did not only just lend a few voiceovers for the game...It was shocking news to a few when news broke out that notorious rapper 50 Cent was lending a few lines for the Spec Ops mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I didn't really see any problem with that but alot of fans did - hey, what can you do?

What recently came as a shocker next was the choice of music used for the game's launch trailer; 'Till I Collapse by Eminem of The Eminem Show album. I thought the music had fit that trailer pretty well but that's just me. Take a look at the trailer below if for some reason youve been living under a rock the past few days. "

That's pretty funny yet highly smart. Possibly the biggest game of 2009, smart thinking to put your music in there for your upcoming album....

I think IW was originally going to have the two artists get involved with the game cause they might actually be fans of their music, but I'll bet Bobby Kotick was like: "OH, wait! Let's make a deal with them so that we earn MORE MONEY! I'M SO SMART!."

sniper mk0, hip hop mc`s make the best use of metaphors, similies and rhyme schemes in any genre. your clearly not a man of the arts so kindly STFU. hip hop is a vehicle of creativity for those that come from struggle (id suggest you do some research on the deep history of this artform but we both know your to ignorant to do that.)it pays bills for some people ( myself included, im a rec. engineer and producer/composer/writer/MC.oh and i have a degree in sound engineering and a masters in compostion, ) you would not know a good bar if slapped you in the face and hung you upside down. you know nothing about song arrangment so keep your ill informed , mammas boy from "west suburbia" opinion to yourself. i bet your a pimply teenager who dont know how to get laid. listen to "do`s and donts" by nas. should help you out there loser...

Ah, typically ignorant responses from all sides (bar one or two), I see. What else is new around here...

"Why is it that the people who hate rap always feel the need to let it be known? I hardly ever hear about how much someone hates country or even classical music." - because you don't hear country music everywhere you turn, much less classical. Imagine, if you hated something that was seemingly everywhere you go, that seemingly everyone enjoyed. You would feel the need to be far more vocal about your opinion to get your point across, heck it would vex you to an inordinate level that everyone is so "stupid" and "tasteless."

However, what these hip-hop haters need to understand is that we don't all listen to gangsta-rap (I absolutely abhor gangster rap). I don't think 50 Cent is talented in anyway, nor do I enjoy the likes of Flo-rida or TI or Akon... I do however thoroughly enjoy the likes of Saul Williams, KRS One, A Tribe Called Quest, Clouddead, Doom, Bus Driver, Atmosphere, Twista... Genuinely talented hip-hop artists. If you hate hip-hop and think the lyrics are stupid and one-dimensional, you have to at least give artists like these a listen. You will find you have been grossly misinformed. If you do not at least try, then you are as ignorant as these people say you are.

That said, I would listen to rock music far more than I would hip-hop. I'm a massive fan of all thing from Led Zeppelin, to King Crimson, to Metallica, to Suffocation. I love bands like Death, Cynic and Atheist especially, jazz/prog-influenced death metal bands from the early 90s. And I love jazz and progressive music just as much. If there's something I genuinely dislike, it's dance music. Oh, how I hate dance music.

But to say that rock/metal music is devoid of rhythm is the most asinine thing I've heard in ages. Led Zeppelin and King Crimson experimented with rhythms that you probably couldn't even tap out with your finger. Heck, try wrapping your head around the rhythmic complexities of a typical Meshuggah song, I dare you. Here's some choice death metal masters, playing difficult time signatures with a level of technical prowess even the greatest players dream of...

Martyr

Necrophagist:

Meshuggah:

So, don't for one second think that rock/metal musicians and fans arre devoid of rhythm. We are masters of it!

5.13 - People Need To Relax...
Well, I have to say myself that I really don't care for Rap or Hip-Hop or whatever it's called these days, but I fully understand it's popularity with a lot of people, regardless of race or culture. Anyway, I my self am a 35 year old white male, raised in the mountains of Virginia, surrounded by Country music. So naturally I detest Country and much prefer Metal to the point that I have been a guitarist for 22 years and even played drums for a few years. I prefer Metal and no, I outgrew the whole headbanging thing years ago but I still enjoy the music and the drive that Metal music has. To me, something like Slipknot or In Flames would be much preferred in a game than Rap, but again, I totally understand why it is there based on the popularity of that music genre. In the end I don't listen to music while playing as to me it is a bit of a distraction. With the exception of racing games, which I like some old Speed Metal, Industrial or even Techno as it sort of makes you want to drive faster.

The bottom line is music reaches people. People connect with it and relate to it. They find something that appeals to them and is catchy and it plays back in their mind as they go about their day. Not all genres of music will reach all people but with the polarity of Rap music today, I can see why a developer would want to add it in the game as well as why a Rap artist would want to be associated with the media steamroller that is MW2. So while Rap music doesn't "speak" to me and I can rarely relate to it while I relate to Metal quite naturally, I don't discount the value of Rap or Hip-Hop music. I can listen to it, and I can see how other people feel the music inside, much like I do with my chosen genre, so I don't automatically hate it. I will actually take Rap over Country any day, but that comes from a traumatized childhood of being forced to listen to Conway Twitty. The point is, just because YOU don't like something, doesn't mean it's worthless. There are many forms of music and many talented people playing all the different styles and genres and many opinions on what is "best". In the end it doesn't matter, the game is not any better or worse because of the choice of a trailer's music, sound coming from a radio on a HMMWV, or a voice actor's profession.

I personally do not care for rap at all, it's really not my cup of tea. But am I bothered that they've used some Rap in an advert? No, why do I care what the advert is like? Its not like the game is filled with Rap that I don't like, the game is solid.

And even 50cent's voice in game, what do I care? As long as my comrade doesn't start suddenly rapping in the middle of a firefight, I'm happy, its just another voice to hear. Maybe a familiar one to some, but so what? Are people, even hardcore COD fans, bothered that the guy who voices the Arbiter from Halo 3 plays a pretty prominent Character in the game?

I really couldn't care who voices who in my games, as long as it fits then I'm happy.

Actually if you watch some of the many documentaries on the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, freestyling is quite popular and pretty common with the soldiers. Check out YouTube, there are tons of videos out there of soldiers showing off their talents and I have to admit, even being a Metal guy, some of them are very good. I don't know that any would be freestyling during a firefight as most of the soldiers I know get pretty serious and are all business once the action starts but it wouldn't surprise me to see that pop up in a game at some point to give a character a little more personality.

Like any genre. I don't generalise, but Its not my fav style, but i like a few rappers

However...i am particularly distasteful of "gangsta" Unit considering what the represent and, well, I'm not surprised that they are in the game =/

16.1 - What does IT stand for???
I don't claim to be the epitome of a RAP Ph.D. candidate, but I can state...without doubt...that ALL of rap does NOT stand for ONE thing!!! Sure, if you are cornered into listening to certain artists...then you will get one aspect. However, just like any genre of music from jazz and classical to rap and rock there are various facets to the music. This is because there are individual artists that want to express a specific sound, vibe, or notion. There are PLENTY of artists that don't express violent sentiments in their music. There are plenty of artists that offer multifaceted looks at life, love, death, sex, drugs, etc. within the confines of a rap song. As for the comment about poetry in poor taste. I can agree that some rap is horribly derivative, trivial, and trite...but that is the case with ALL forms of entertainment. But, Tupac Shakur has a book of poetry that has won awards and sparked college courses surrounding it alone.
I'm not trying to change your opinion because that is yours to do with whatever you may. I am just trying to broaden your horizons a bit. I love music of ALL types. One look at my iTunes page and you would see classic rock next to classic rock...classic jazz mixing with acid fusion....reggae...ska...alt. rock...r&b (old and new)....pop...new age...opera...and hip-hop (mostly before the year 2000).

16.2 - i agree with you that its wrong to generalise all rap as being bad but this is my arguement
i dont claim to know anything about rap from a musical or entertainment respect but i have'nt made this statments without atleast giving rap a chance and believe me with rap i tride to like it but its just not for me, it dosent strike me as odd at all that an artist such as Tupac can gain recognition through poetry i have never heard any of his poems so for me to comment on them would be wrong but i would like to think the recognition he is getting is not only due to his artistic position, the industry is vast with many diferent tastes however if you look at the majority of those who listen to rap then you will clearly see my point much rap not all but to much is directed towards those who do drugs crime and prostitution, anything that try's to glamorise anyone of these things is in my opinion damaging to society, im not saying rap artist should stop righting but wouldnt it make sence for those who are righting such things to be band from the industry in the end its only hurting those rappers who are making a living with quality songs.

16.3 - Cool...but one more comment....
Hip Hop as a culture grew out of poverty. It was people in the mid to late 70's that were tired of being ignored by the masses. They had a message that they wanted to get out to the world and they did it through lyrical expression, dance, dj-ing, and graffiti. The reason that rap came to prominence was not due to those same people listening to the music. It was actually the masses (non poor and non minority) that came to view rap as an alternative. It was not unheard of to have a club that featured hip hop artists and punk artists on the same bill. Groups like Public Enemy, who took a strong pro-Black stance, were consistently shocked because the concerts were filled with young, white teenagers.
What I am saying is that Rap has grown as a music because the "majority of those that listen to rap" shifted from the poor, down-trodden minorities to everybody. Rap could NOT survive on the money of just one group of people.
Now, it is obvious that you are younger than I and probably don't have the same connection to the culture. So, I will just say that just as Jazz, Country, and Rock have evolved and changed. So has Rap. The newer generation of artists don't have the same connection to the culture as those of the past and that is why you hear what you hear. Marketing execs from the labels "know what people want"/sarc. Thus, you have an over abundance of one sub-genre of rap.
As for banning anybody from the industry. I am NOT for censorship. Therefore, I simply choose NOT to listen to those that don't have a message or are lacking in any lyrical content. Yeah...that is a bunch of them today...thus why my hip hop catalog almost stops after the year 2000. (with a few exceptions)
I humbly respect your opinion. I just wanted to give you some information and let you know that the state of hip hop NOW is not what it was before, nor what it was originally intended to be. But, just like with anything, the lure of money and fame can make even the most brilliant artist pander to the lowest common denominator. In that respect, it kind of reminds me of the game industry today where few devs can afford to or are not willing to step out and make original IP's and instead rely on their constant reiteration of cash cows.

16.4 - thanks for taking the time out educate me on the facts
im sorry if i came across as an ignorant kid that wasnt my intention, i realy do apreciate all that you have told me and it sounds like rap has a very vast culture but in generalising it as i did was not fair to all of the tallented individuels who paved the way for younger generations to make there mark, it is very unfortunate that some rap today is presured by the marketers to appeal to what i had asumed was the vast majority much like as you have said the gaming industry, i wont go on anymore than nesacary i'll just end with saying youv given me a broader outlook on rap and as a fellow gamer and music lover its very much apreciated.
