Controversial CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Video

Infinity Wards' soon to be released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 appears to drop players into some pretty controversial roles during the games campaign mode. One being this "Airport" scene from the No Russian level. Check it out after the jump.

The world has always been friggin violent.Death my friend is the only constant. The world has not been getting more violent just more efficient.Video Games, books , television, and movies are only a mirror. They do not cause violence- people cause violence. An adult should know this and not be looking for scapegoats.

I find it funny how a lot of people in here suddenly sound like jack thompson. Funny stuff indeed.

are the PC guys invited in the crossplatform battles as well, or is that just too one sided :P

on topic: the only thing that differentiate the mass killings in GTA vs this scene, is that GTA has the popo's chasing after you. This scene, however, is just a pure killing spree with no punishment.

1.1 - Well
I just hate the fact this is justified in the game...

ALL IN THE NAME OF A WAR ON TERROR, WE MUST BECOME TERRORISTS TO WIN.
KILLING GIVES LIFE.
SLAVERY IS FREEDOM.
FIGHTING BEGETS PEACE.

Reminds me of 9/11...Not to mention, Mumbai was also a fn inside job, but nobody wants to hear that...

And to the people saying this is just a game...No, it's not just a game. It is justifying shooting civilians. Does it matter that it's not real? And if you agree with it, you're so corrupt no one is going to change you but yourself.

This is a scene that I never imagined playing in a COD game. And I am not sure as to why IW needed to have this in there. All I can think of is that they really wanted to pull a Rockstar and make something controversial that will hit big in the news outlets. Not really the best choice if you ask me, especially in the current world events.

I can see the headlines now, "Latest Video Game Trains Children To Be Terrorists."

I couldn't agree more. I really don't care about the violence, its the type that it is. I don't mind slapping a hooker around in GTA, I just wouldn't want to do THAT (Airplane scene) in a video game...ever.

Jesus Christ man, I've never felt so sick at the thought of a game. I know it sounds so cliche and lame, but these assholes aren't getting my money.

This isn't like GTA where violence is played off in a comedic way. It's all about how it's presented. Did you see that injured guy try to crawl away from the player? That's pretty disgusting.

I understand they're trying to create shock value, but encouraging YOU to mow down all those people is f'ed up and shameless.

How are they gonna top this? Are they going to put a school shooting level in Modern Warfare 3?

2.5 - almost none of you have played the game
If you had you'd know the context, after you play the game you'll understand that part better....

Also you don't have to mow down any civilians you can just observe..... thats what i did. I shot randomly at the wall away from civies so i wouldn't look suspicous either.

But that scene was extremely disturbing, i wont deny that, but it serves its purpose and gets you to think.

Politically correct? Who cares about politically correct? Morality is the thing in question here.

Also, everyone keeps bringing up GTAIV. There were plenty of people, myself included, that wouldn't buy GTAIV because of its immorality. It's downright evil to even think about doing some of the things that are being done in these games. I'm not trying to say that I'm the perfect image of goodness here, but you have to draw the line somewhere, and I think it probably should have been drawn a while back.

If we can't get our kicks without killing innocents in games, then it's time to step away. Why should I be expected to get any enjoyment out of that? Everyone keeps saying, "It's just a game. Skip the level if you don't like it." It's all fun and games, right? What does that say about us?

For those of you who have kids, imagine your 5 year old son or daughter finding you playing this, and their reaction. They would think that the game was evil. What do you think they would think about you, in associating you with that evil? Would they be right? Would you honestly want to tell them that it's alright to murder helpless innocents, as long as they're just virtual?

"I'm just pretending to brutally kill all those nice people, honey."

All I'm saying, is I have a hard enough time explaining to my daughter why I would kill a deer in Oblivion. Even if we keep our children away from such games, we send a message of indifference and desensitization to this and future generations. We are telling them that we are okay with this sort of stuff.

You could tell yourself that the children will be protected from this kind of game; that they won't play it, and won't see others playing it, but you'd be lying to yourself. I have kids. I can't always protect them. Sometimes they see things I am trying to protect them from. I can try to explain to my children why terrorism happens in real life, and how evil it is. They still won't understand. How am I supposed to explain to them that it's evil when I'm pulling the trigger, even if it's virtual?

They're just hating on the game to hate. This really isn't anything new. I bet if there was a scene like this in Killzone where you played as the Helgan and you had to kill some civilians they wouldn't be "sick to their stomachs". Grow up people, it's just a game.

Yes, because grown ups can have fun simulating terrorism, right? Because we can get a kick out of realistic images of innocent unarmed people being brutally slaughtered by our own virtual hands, and it doesn't mean anything, right?

I suppose the "grown up" motto is "It's just a game. Have fun!"

Unfortunately, grown up isn't always the thing to be. In this case, we all ought to be a little more like little children. There's truth in what they see, and how they respond.

I'll have my fun playing something else, thank you. I'm not a perfect person, but at least I can attempt to display a little moral fiber.

Call me a killjoy.

kraze07 I love how you throw that out there. Read a history book A SHET TON more people would have died if they hadn't dropped those bombs. The Japanese were training women and children to use guns against the impending American invasion. Look at the casualties the Japanese were taking on islands already knowing they lost. They were brainwashed and thought that dying for the emperor was the greatest honor. Imagine if it's your kid that gets killed then you find out your government had a weapon that would have prevented your kid from dying and didn't use it. Not to mention the British killed more civilians in Dresden with the firebombing raid. Didn't see that mentioned.

Gish.. That is what I was getting at. Comparing a major war between 2 countries and trying to avoid a countries military to target civilians. America might not be perfect but they didn't drop nukes on Japan just to kill civilians or try and start a war.

Once again WTF does this have to do with the US you idiots that want to make it that argument?? You act like Americans think its OK for civilians to be killed. THE TERRORISTS ARE SHOOTING RUSSIAN CIVILIANS! We don't think ANY civilians should be killed in cold blood. Your anti-American mindset has made you into a simpleton. You are probably the same people that cry foul about accidental civilian deaths in Iraq or Afghanistan but give terrorists a pass for cutting off civilians heads on camera or suicide bombing in a crowded market.

You all would rather climb in bed with monsters, just so you can trash the US.

I don't know what the **** Infinity Ward is thinking... Modern Warfare 2 drops in a few days, with a mission entailing the PLAYER to shoot up civilians in an airport... of course I saw this a week or two ago, and didn't think nothing of it. But with the recent shootings in America, especially the one regarding Fort Hood, IW is in for some bad media coverage and picketing...

Less than a week ago people thought this was the coolest thing since sliced bread, and everyone against it is either a hippie or mother of 4.

Now, after these shootings took place, people are starting to think twice about this mission... DUH!!!

The biggest fact is... MILLIONS of people will be playing MW2 within the first week! Men, women, teens, tweens, and kids! Thats a huge demographic of people experiencing the game and this mission...

IW has some goddamn balls thats for sure. The media is going to rip them a new a-hole.

The game looks awesome. I dont know why people are so desperate to put this game down in every way imaginable...

Its an awesome way to start the game and really sets the scene for the story... And thats what it is.. an effin story!!!

Youre playing the part of an undercover agent, You dont even have to kill the civilians, you can walk along and not fire your weapon once.. You are given a warning before the mission starts and you can skip it if your easily disturbed.

I dont know what is wrong with you people. You are quite happy to mow down pedestrians in GTAIV or shoot an innocent taxi driver in the face but when its in a different game all of a sudden its sick.

11 - ok...some of you need to relax
i served 3 years in the Marine Corps and as a full blown patriot i can understand what this is, you should also know this is just make believe, its trying to depict true events to bring the player in close to the emotional storyline. If anything it will show players how real and sad it can be to do something like this and further dissuade them against it.

Last point is that there is stuff like this in movies ALL THE TIME, its simply portraying the "bad guy" so you want to kick his a$$. So when some of you say its "tasteless", really? come on...

Furthermore, anyone who can be influenced by this sort of thing to reenact it some time in the future, will have done it anyways without the game and really shouldn't be playing games in the first place if they're really that impressionable. Also should be getting psychological help.

11.1 - Officially Crossed Line
Theres a fine line between portraying violence like this, and having the player control it...

I might sound like a mother of 3 or even worse Jack Thompson, but you have to admit, that there has to be kids out there, who are teetering on that edge of sanity, and if they even think that playing these scenarios out in a video game is ok... it could set them over that edge.

Not everyone in the world thinks logically, knowing that what they are playing is wrong, and while it does happen, it should never be recreated. This is a fact.

IW could have easily made this an unplayable, dramatic scene, complete with sad orchestral music and everything. This could have proven a better story telling method, portraying a strong message that the events unfolding are dreadful and sad. Urging you to push forward and defeat the terrorist.

They didn't and thats what makes this mission extremely distasteful.

11.2 - @Shank
The fact that they let you play through this part is what makes it more dramatic and you have to remember this game is intended for mature gamers. If someone is influenced by something like this then I don't think the game is meant to be played by people like them.

Having the player go through the scene does not make it more dramatic, it only makes it more controversial. IW KNOW this.

And of course this game is made for a mature audience. What you have to see is people who cannot understand this scene WILL play the game.

13 - oh.....
better pre-order now before it gets banned!

edit: All of the sudden people want to get a sense of morality. Where on TV and in the Movies we see scenes much like these played out everyday. During War efforts, after 9/11 after the Virginia Tech Shootings and now unfortunately after Fort Brag. You guys act as if IW somehow knew that this recent event was bound to happen and are in some way at fault for it happening. Come on people.... There are some very sick and delusional people in this world and they have been here well before a freaking video game places you in their shoes.

In IW's defense, the character you're taking control off is under cover, and while under cover has to do so rather questionable things in order to gain trust and take down the target. Undercover cops knowingly do things they know are against the law in order to get in close to their target. Now all of the sudden you look at the game developers in a bad light when countless other media outlets have depicted such things countless times before just shows how hypocritical all of you who are complaining now truly are. No one seemed to have a problem then....Why now? I realize it's bad timing but what do you really expect them to do at this point in time with the game releasing Tuesday if not earlier?

it's not like its required of you to pull the trigger.....
I don't believe it's required that you kill anyone during that scene. You can sit there and watch as the scene rolls out, or you can be the sick twisted soul and pull the trigger...

There is a choice. We freak out because the person playing is blasting away, but that scene is fully controlled by the player.....
