Ugly Is The New Pretty

Gamer Limit writes, "In an ideal Ayn Rand-ian world, the good guys are pretty, and the bad guys are ugly. The internal beauty of virtue and wholesomeness manifests itself on a perfectly flawless external visage.

Conversely, the baddies have scarred, twisted features. The rare smile of a villain is not a product of happiness but malice. Games used to be this clear-cut. Games used to be this black-and-white."

The game has changed for character development. Will we ever see more character creations, like mario, in today's generation? One of the more recent ones is Sackboy, and his infectious smile has proven that heroes don't have to be master Chief to sell copies in this generation. As long as we have more characters, like Sackboy, that defy the status quote and remind us why we play video games and why games like Mario and Sonic did so well in their day, then the industry will continue to survive.

Decent article but off-base in the conclusion imo.

I also don't really get what's ugly about it. High res textures doesn't make a game more relevant. Yeah, Snake is a great example. I'd say he's the best example. But very far from representing the standard. There are very few characters that exemplify that kind of maturity in design. Everyone else in gaming has the same shaved head, the same intense brow, the same square chin, the same beefy physique, or the same hourglass figure, the same DDs, the same plump ass, etc. The possibilities are there, but no one really takes advantage of them.

It's not really progress, it's exchanging one set of ideals for another.
