Undedicated: A New Trend in PC Gaming?

PC gamers have been up in arms as of late over Infinity Ward's recent announcement which said it will not be supporting dedicated servers in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Shortly thereafter, id Software revealed that they too would not be utilizing dedicated servers in their upcoming shooter, ironically named RAGE. Why are these developers moving away from what has been the standard in PC gaming and will it become a trend? Is PC gaming going the way of console gaming? The answer is a resounding "it depends."

If MW2 STILL does well on the PC you can count on other devs following Activision's lead. I really hope PC gamers take a stance and stick to it. They made COD what it is today and it's simply not fair the IW turns around and stabs them in the back.

It'll undoubtedly do well in sales, which is what other companies will look at instead of user feedback from IWnet and other things that actually, you know, matter to gamers/consumers.

Modern Warfare 2 launches in like 3 days and it's not even in the top 5 on Steam's Best Selling list. Not to mention Steam is the only digital distributor selling it.

Hopefully it flops hard at retail too.

1.3 - It's Call of Duty. What do you expect?
This game will sell. It's because everyone and their dog knows the name "Call of Duty." They're not buying it because they want to, they're buying it because everyone else is. And if everyone else is buying it, hey, why shouldn't you?

I'm just glad people can see past the BS that IW is pulling. I have better games to play. My Steam rating is a perfect 10 with 65.3 hours in the past 2 weeks. That's with Torchlight and Shattered Horizon making up 2/3 of the total. Yeah I have a buttload of time on my hands because I'm on vacation. hehehe...

What I really want to know is how a P2P connection is better... you would think that is stupid that it is but IW sincerely thinks that it's better. It's pretty much a fact that P2P is slower then dedi's.
IW is basing IWNet on the thought that P2P is faster. YEAH RIGHT?!Since when? 9v9 is because that many people on P2P is CRAP. Look at Halo 3's Big Team Slayer. Perfect example of P2P and large amount of players.

1.4 - Just PR BS, IW knows P2P sucks.
"Lets pick a random host with a sh***y upload speed and make him host. Soon everyone will realize that these silly OC3's and mods are just a fad."

Frankly, it's going to sell, especially on console platforms. If it doesn't fair well on PC, Infinity Ward will get its act together for the next installment.

I seriously doubt that. I think if it doesn't do good on PC, they'll eliminate it and stick to consoles only.

Why spend money for dedicated servers if your game will just be pirated anyway? I wish people quit could complaining.

You do realize that the publishers, or developers don't buy or run the dedicated servers right? The players buy or rent server space to host a dedicated server for a game. So while you wish people would stop complaining about a feature that has been standard for almost 15 years, we wish people would understand what the hell a dedicated server is before running their mouth.

Even if the developer does not HOST the dedicated servers, there is still a cost in developing and maintaining the code, as there are different requirements between dedicated and P2P.

Just because one dumb developer cuts dedicated servers does NOT mean every dev will.

I think that gaming is dying as whole.

Now that big companies know the pc games make tons of money

they are going to want to take control of gaming.

If they call the shots they can milk "money" from gamers

this what them consoles have brought to pc gaming.

the gaming media spreads more lies about consoles being cheaper baxhing pc gaming to the side because they now they can't console pc gamers.

here take a good look at this thread

http://www.gamespot.com/pag...

then agin pc gamers are too smart to buy that game.

One thing I always love about PC Gaming is that there's no restrictions. So long as Hardware makers keep doing what they're doing. A group of us will rise up and make our own games. Gaming will never truly die as long as PCs are in existence.

No need for certification, no need for red-tape. Just make the games and push em on the net. Places like Newgrounds.com are why PC Gaming will never truly die.

What will we do without the "money first, hype second, and if we have time we might consider trying for quality or fun" games?

I really hope this isn't the case; I don't mind p2p servers as an OPTIONAL feature in PC games, but when it is the only way to play online, I'm not interested.

With developers like Dice, and others who continue to support it hopefully it's gonna be a trend.

The game isn't selling all that well on Steam, and Steam is the only digital distributor selling on PC. Torchlight was beating MW2 until today, which really says a lot given the MW2 hype machine. Now Torchlight is only one spot behind MW2.

In the meantime Dragon Age is selling like crazy on Steam with the top 2 spots for a week now. Bioware really paid PC gamers their due with the superior version of quite possibly the best RPG ever made.

False.

The PC Gaming industry makes more money than 360, PS3 and Wii.

10.2 - Killing Floor
I love the way killing floor did things. A small development team, low price tag, PC only title.
Sold insane quantities and is still selling well. More importantly the game gets regular huge updates, and the only things they ask you to pay for are alternate character skins if you so wish, at a very low price.

12 - dedis will survive
dedicated servers are less required now than they were before: because in general the computers today are more able to do all the hit detection etc that would normally be carried out on the server, likewise internet bandwidths and ping times are improving gradually.
However, dedicated servers are still the way forwards and will be until everybody has 10Mbps up and pings of 30ms to the other side of their continent. Even then dedicated servers make management of the online community for clans etc much easier (or even, possible), likewise the performance demends of games will increase aswell as processing power (when consoles stop holding the PC back) - so dedicateds will be required once more.
Lastly, the loss in sales on the PC from not including dedicated server software will mean it would have been more financially sound to support dedicated servers - especially for a game which has a lot of enthusiasts like cod does.
And lastly the piracy argument. Steam may provide a (not unbreakable by any means) layer of protection, but that doesn't mean there cannot be p2p ASWELL, or matchmaking of some sort: l4d does it nicely. Furthermore, it would still be possible to use iw.net to handle the game's online community whilst allowing dedicated servers -> sure they would be more complicated to set up and organise and balance but it would be possible (turn off ranked for dedis with non-iw settings?)
