PC Gaming is dead! Long live PC Gaming!

BrutalGamer.com writes:-
Wow I bet I pissed off around 1000 people with that headline alone!

Many have eschewed the coming death of the PC gaming platform over the past 12 – 18 months. My thoughts? Balls to that. What I will say is that what is currently thought of as the PC gaming platform is living out it's final days. What makes me say such ludicrous things? Read on my friends and I shall impart some moose-logic – scary huh!

1 - Horse crap on this article.
First and foremost PC gaming is alive and well. I own a PS3, if I want to play a driving game, sports or arcade type game, I buy it for the console. But if I want to play a strategy game, shooter, and MMO, I play it on the PC. RPG games depending on the title can be either or. I wouldn’t worry about PC gaming until the next generation of consoles coming out, and that is only if they incorporate the mouse and keyboard. But if they add PC items to the console, well it isn’t a console, it’s a PC.

PC gaming is alive, but look at what you are playing - niche genres and MMOs... just saying..

PC gaming is not dead. People who say that are people who don't play PC games.

FPS games are alive and well on the PC. I wouldn't call that a niche genre. Then there are RTS games and RPGs which are genres that have plenty of people playing them. Are they niche genres?

so, you're calling the RTS niche? Games like CnC, SC and WarCraft are some of the biggest franchises in the gaming world, selling better than most games and receiving great reviews. How is RTS more niche than driving games? What about Relic's games, aren't they mainstream enough by now?

1.5 - PC gaming is good and all, but I think the main problem with it is cheating
I play UT3 zeroping instagib CTF on pro servers alot, but the way some people kill is just impossible. Now I cant tell if someone owns me cuz they are just so good, or if they are shady ba*tards just botting. I've seen people go from fresh n00bs to the best shooters overnight (no kidding, literally).

On my ps3, when I die in killzone, I know the guy on the other end is playing with just the same Dualshock 3 I'm using.

The only people that say PC gaming is dead are those who perceive that they personally cannot afford it... even though it's much cheaper in the long run.

Yes, it's extremely expensive to get a top of the line gaming pc, but every few years when it's time to upgrade your regular pc, why not pay an extra $100 for a good processor & throw a video card in it???

In the long run, it's actually cheaper than a console. ESPECIALLY XBOX... Not to dis the Xbox or anything, but they nickel and dime you to death, and people still just eat it up...

1.7 - I finally brought myself to read this POS article and give a sophistocated answer.
First off, @Zinc below me, yeah yeah call me a hypocrit. I'm sorry about my comment earlier.

"What will rise from the ashes is a new era of PC gaming. An era where corporate control is exerted like never before. You will never get a truly closed system on the PC as it is far too tempting to hack, but you should be able to provide a secure framework for delivery of map packs (paid for of course!)"

So this guy wants to change the way PC gaming is played. He wants direct ports of console games, which are 100% of the time inferior to their PC counterparts. He wants to pay for his DLC. PC games have always had free DLC. ALWAYS. And here is the reason. We use our money to play your game. WE buy the hardware. WE buy the game. WE are giving YOU money. What differentiates us from consoles is that they pay for a uniform piece of hardware. The games can only be as good as what the hardware can do.

" PC gaming must evolve and if it won;t accept these new efforts by iD and Infinity Ward then the system will just become the MMO/Casual gaming box that it is currently destined to be."

"currently destined to be." What the f*ck are you smoking? Can you play DIII with a gamepad? No. Can you play any FPS game PROPERLY with a gamepad? No (some exceptions but that's a different thread). Can you play Can you play any good RTS on a gamepad? Again, no.

"PC gaming must evolve" - if it ain't broke, don'x fix it. There is no way for it to "evolve" and if you mean evolve by becoming lesser than what it is then you are truly stupid.

"I think a majority of people put out by these changes are the ones perpetuating the issue by downloading ripped editions of games."

Every single PC gamer I know buys legitimate games. Be it from Steam, D2D, or the physical disk from an authorized seller. Most of pirating is done in third world countries where they cant spend the equivelent of $60 USD to play a game. $60 USD is how much they get payed in a couple months. I'm not defending pirates, I'm just stating a different point of view.

2 - down with piracy
I agree piracy is bad, and developers need money.

however taking something standard from gamers isnt going to help you.
Servers are a must, its why I choose PC shooters over consoles.

I blame Zenimax for that or whoever owns id now.

I do believe in time we might see end of Dedicated servers as they have been over the years, but not for awhile. Another 10 years or so at least before they die. For a great Peer to Peer game. Connections all around the world would have to reach a new high point. Right now its not enough. Still there are limits to Peer to Peer that noone likes. It would be nice to find a new way to make dedicated servers implemented into console and PC gaming. Hopefully one of the big companies will do that and throw a slap to the others in the next generation. Giving gamers more options and option for dedicated servers in a couple of games maybe for a monthly fee. Would it be so bad if you could pay XBL like fee on PSN or Nintendo's Online and have option to have a dedicated server run for like 3-7 days a week or something like that for a game or two that you love to play with option to change it around to different game on different days or something?

I care not for the article, because no matter what YOU are trying to make a point of, that is clearly an act of a hit wh0re.

I'm no PC gamer, but PC gaming is NOT dead, far from it. Gaming started on the PC and it will END on the PC.

Piracy is the only thing that is letting back the devs from making PC games and even thinking of producing high budget games. If piracy didn't exist Sony would have ended up making a interface which runs Sony games on your PC!

I agree, but with Steam, D2D, Gamers gate and Impulse. Piracy will be driven away, little by little.

There is nothing niche about any genre of gaming. I like Empire Total War, Company of Heroes, but just bought Dragon Age, Borderlands and Left 4 Dead 2. All of these games can keep me busy for years. I bet the the consoles will be hurting in the next few years however. Here is the reason: Last year devs were stating that they were pushing the Xbox 360 to its limits. This might be true or not, but they will reach that limit. Well the consoles will not see another release of a console for another 5-7 years. That is along time for a console, the PC hardware will pass tremendously.

What really gets me? Why not have all the games on one system.

Zinc - 53 days 3 hours ago
7 - Wow
You know, I remember when I had to screw around with dos load files to get my games to work. Back when we would buy our own games AND share them with friends.

It feels like I've been around for a long time and I just turned 29 last month. Things have come a long way, but some things never really change much.

Gaming has become a business, in the sense that the movie industry is a business. Art and passion always take a back seat to the profit margin. It's the nature of economics, social or otherwise. When things become a real industry with a real business nucleus, with things like stocks and boards ect. You have a change of how things are done.

Some day, everything will probably be server side, rather than client side, as that's perhaps the best hope that companies have for securing their investments. But, even then there are very talented people out there who don't care if something is hard to crack, in fact, they thrive on it...

There's that concept of the first lock and the first lock picked. As long as there is a will, there is a way. You can't safeguard against all forms of attack, because the human mind takes a generated concept and shapes its potential with thought. Thought for thought. Again and again.

There is a reason why pirating happens on the PC and Xbox platforms, as they are the most accessible platforms with large user bases. DVD's are a common format as of right now and before long, many people will have Blue-ray drives... there might even come a time when Blu-ray overtakes DVD's before something bigger and better comes down the pike. When things become cheaper and the proliferation hits a certain point, you will probably see PS3 games floating around for download. These console companies can put as many safeguards as they like in their systems, some of these people in their teams (primarily the marketing and business side of their company) will be patting themselves on the back saying, 'Look at how secure we are!', all the while those in their company who understand the tech will be saying, 'Look at how vulnerable we are!'.

The truth lies somewhere in between.

The true issue is, are you willing to sacrifice options for accessibility, potential for what can simply be shipped right now, and dedicated satisfied customers for people who will take what they get because they don't know any better?

Gaming started because of the innovative nature of man, with a dash of indulgence. Somebody decided to take something that was made for strictly business and military use and turned it into an adventure for themselves and fellow overworked coworkers. That's the spirit in which gaming started and it's that same spirit that makes humanity what it is today and all that it has accomplished.

No matter how petty we get on internet forums or how clever we think our t-shirts are, that won't change.

I hear ya on that Zinc.

Gaming is a business and I have little problem with developers exercising that ability to develop for profit. What problem I do have is basically what you said about the freedom of creativity and art always takes a backseat to the profit margin.

One more reason I love PC Gaming. The community is not dictated by arbitrary goals, so we have every reason to innovate, create, and share with each other: if only for the betterment of gamers around. If I created a really cool game on my PC, I'd love to share it with the world. And for free too. A game like CS still lives because of the community involvement and the hours of man-power poured into a self-less cause. It's things like that, that inspires me to create as well and give back to the community, if only for a sense of pride and helping fellow gamers like me.

Enough of these articles already no matter how much impetus console gaming has PC gaming will never die. Look at the number of free playable titles out there. There are dozens of quality free mmo's, fps games, racing titles and rpgs out there that ppl can play. These are based on micro-transactions and are hugely successful. Look at perfect world. Its an amazing game and makes as much money as any other mmo out there. Look at combat arms. Those games really work. So what if one major developer takes out support for dedicated servers, so what if most games are multi platform and not pc exclusives. They are still there on PC's and u still get to play them. And lets no delve into piracy. See most games are pirated in countries like india and china. I know cause i come from india. Games are released a month to 2 months late over here. So ppl are bound to download and try them. And its not as prevalent as ppl think. Spore was downloaded a million times. But it sold wat like 3 million copies. Games just arent pirated that much. Its just that developers make games from a console gamers perspective. Pc gamers usually have higher expectations and want different things from their games. Look at dragon age. Am sure it is going to sell well on PC. Its just made for the Pc. The witcher, crysis, CnC3, spore, sims 3, COD4, L4D all sold extremely well for the PC. People need to stop writing such articles and just continue playing their games. The platforms can take care of themselves.

I don't know if it's collective IQs being lowered or standards falling, but when I was 8 years old I could look at a server list and not have a problem understanding what it was and how to find a good one to play on.
