Cage Annoyed By Heavy Rain Misconceptions

NowGamer: Speaking exclusively to NowGamer, David Cage admits that there's one misconception floating around that truly gets his goat.

"It's definitely when people think that Heavy Rain is 'just a bunch of QTEs'" He goes on to say...

0.1 - Exactly!!!
People here are saying its all QTE but even the people writing the artice said they played the game and agreed with the developers.

theres no discussion tbh its an unbiased well known site Vs a few people who might have/might not have played the game...

1 - just go play farenheit
if you have any reservations about this game, go play FH/IP. if that game seems like a "snore fest" to you than go play halo. and also, whats wrong with qte? the kung fu scenes in farenheit where if you had full control, wouldve been reduced to spamming the same three hit combo over and over ad nauseum. i loved your previous work mr cage. . . count me in for anything else you ever make. bring on the qte's!

1.1 - Pretty sure this comment was directed upon me
Look,a few QTE here and there doesn't bother me at all since most awesome series has used this method (GOW, Uncharted 2 to name a few) but would you honestly prefer Shenmue 3 (hypothetical situation here) to have QTE's over the Yakuza series awesome, simple to use yet has a lot of depth battle system?

1.2 - wasnt responding directly to you
but with the type of game heavy rain seems to be, like with farenheit, the qte's work. id rather have epic qte sequences rather than lackluster fighting engine. yakuza's engine works beautifully, but theres a huge difference between kazuma-san, and what you become in farenheit
EDIT: what it comes down to, is heavy rain is not a brawler, or rpg, or racing game, or any of those. it is a story driven adventure game. if i want to shoot stuff, i know the games i can go to for that, and for brawling, i know great games in that genre, too, but leave this game what it is. why does it need a deep fighting engine, or a shooting mechanic? it may have some of these elements, but is not dependent upon them.

That is why I brought it up. I enjoyed Ninja Blade with all its bugs and all. It was constant non stop over the top action and I think people should have given it a chance.

But the double standard about the QTE is interesting since that is why Ninja Blade got majorly pwned.

If you've read my rants before, you'll know this really sh*ts me too. If you dont know what this game is about, please read this.

I'm guessing a good 85% of this game will be like a standard adventure, looking around your environment for clues. It will be very cinematic of course, thanks to the great sounding controll system. An lots of 24 style camera moves, which were in Farenheight as well.

QTE's will be minimal. In fact, I'll go one step further and say, I dont even seen these as QTE's. Not in the sence were all use to.

A QTE in GoW war means, Kratos goes into some athletic move, you get the prompt to pres one specific button. If you dont press it, you fail and try the whole thing again.

In Heavy Rain its more like a choice is being given. You can push many buttons. You can push NONE if you want and see how that plays out. It giving you a crossroad where the decission you make will start you down a story path, not mearly having you pull off a special move.

These are CONTEXT SENSITIVE controls.Just like Zelda will have one button to open a door and then have the same button to grab a clay pot. There are 3 buttons on your left hand, do I grab the gun, the knife, or the banana. Theres 3 buttons on your right hand, do I grab the crowbar, the featherduster, or open the window?

Its letting you make a choice from a multitue of possible outcomes and like no other game before its letting you do this on the fly without having to go to some conversation tree.

You will be put on the spot at times, you will need to react quickly and you will have to deal with your decissions and the consequences.

Remember this is a game where you can actually die (probably through not reacting) and the story will continue with that charactor dead in the story. Who knows how many ways this can play out.

7 - 1 Word Folks.........
Shenmue
------------------
http://www.youtube.com/watc...

This dynamite game above 'invented' the QTE's (Quick Time Events) and utilized them for martial arts and reflex actions that occurred during brief and extended cut-scenes. That's why Heavy Rain appeals to me so much, because it has that Shenmue feel to it. It's something innovating, fun and different all at the same time.

Most games poorly utilize QTE's but the way Heavy Rain approaches them, like Shenmue 1 and 2 did, is taking Shenmue's philosophy 1 step further into next-gen HD gaming and using them to tell a much deeper story and narration than in most games through a pre-played cinematic.

I can see why he's annoyed. All I read seems to be how Heavy Rain is like a movie and you just push a button hear and there. Watching videos of them playing demos though I see a lot more gameplay than that.
