Netflix PS3 streaming arrives today

"Last month, Netflix announced that they'd be adding a new piece of hardware to the growing list of gadgets that support Netflix streaming. That device was none other than the PlayStation 3, a suitable choice for growth given that Netflix is already supported on the Xbox 360. The only really surprising aspect of the whole affair was the timeline Netflix put forth, and as of tomorrow many PS3 owners who are also Netflix subscribers will be receiving the installation disc to make this all possible.

If you're a Netflix subscriber and asked for a disc, Netflix has already mailed them out, and will get into most people's hands by tomorrow. The PS3 will then join the Xbox 360, the Roku, TiVo DVRs, some standalone Blu-ray players and of course the PC as devices which can access streaming video through Netflix."

That doesn't make any sense...

Your friends wouldn't actually be there, and unless you actually like talking during movies it would be completely pointless.

You just want to watch movies for free! J'ACCUSE!

Be sure to do a comparison of how the streaming compares to a real Blu-Ray as well as a DvD being upscaled. I want to know as I'm on the fence about getting Netflixs and this might help me take the leap.

5 - i've been using it on the 360 for a while
and my ps3 disc should arrive today.

i'm in the northeast of the US, I use att dsl 3mb down and 256 up

i get 4 bars on sd streaming and it looks as good as dvd on my 37" hdtv

with the "hd" streaming I get usually either 2-3 bars, and it looks better than sd but no where near bluray, but still it does look better than the sd streaming which already looks good.

the service is stable on the 360 and will hopefully be as stable on the PS3, i dont see why it wouldnt be.

thats my 2 cents, I replaced cable with netflix streaming, its like haivng a crappy video store in your home, that plus the mail rentals which i get both dvd and bluray, its a nice service thats fairly inexpensive compared to cable.

anyway I hope you all enjoy the service as much as i have, off to watch monty pythons flying circus, every episode is available to stream.

6 - I think
it will work about half as well as the 360 Netflix streaming.

That's usually the way things work when they finally make it to PS3 after being on 360.

Meh, I think it will work as OK as streaming services go. BD-Live tends to work OK and I believe that's how Netflix PS3 is working around it.

It'll work better on the PS3, since all these time, the 360 gamers have just been beta-testing it for us. So thank them.

That means your PS3 is starting to overheat. You'll most likely end up getting the YLOD soon, if you haven't already. You can try to prevent it as much as possible by leaving your system unplugged from the wall for a day or two, and then vacuuming it out, making sure all the dust and foreign matter is free from the vents. If your system is in an enclosed space, such as an entertainment center, you may want to consider moving it to a more wide-open space, for the best possible airflow.

I wish you the best of luck. My PS3 recently got the YLOD about a couple days after I signed up to recieve my streaming disc. I was playing Borderlands, and now my game is stuck in my system. I have yet to call Sony, however...

My disc is stuck too. Left it unplugged last night and tried again this mourning with no luck. I keep it on its side on top of entertainment center not enclosed and hardly ever on more than 2 hours a day. When I turn it on It is green light followed by a brief yellow light then red blinking light. Called sony 150 for repair sucks.

10 - this may be helpful to some
i recently cancelled my netflix account but then reupped when i heard about this. as soon as i reupped, earlier this week, i signed up for the disk.

so i called customer service and talked to a super helpful guy named Rob. he said that they expect to have all disks out by the end of the month, but from the sounds of things that's probably their buffer date. i bet we all get ours within the week.

he also mentioned that b/c there are so many to send netflix is trying to keep it from affecting the shipment or folks' normal dvds and blurays as well.

sounds like they've got this thing incredibly organized. im surprised that only a few weeks after announcing that the disks are making their way out so quickly. an in large quantity it sounds like.

excited about this. ive got the roku box so now i can give that to someone...

Why? Why not just pay for Netflix and enjoy its HD streaming? Or pop in a Bluray for instant 1080p? Oh, you're just butthurt, my bad.

I just followed the tone of your post. I've been enjoying Netflix for 7 months now. Got a Roku box. Now my PS3 streams too. And you stretch for (pay for I might add) 1080p streaming on a Blu ray player?! Hahaha.

Exactly ReBurn. And as we know, written word (when misused, broken English, incorrect syntax) cannot convey one's tone adequately, thus, it can me misinterpreted.

Reminds me of when Bluray was announced in the PS3 and movies sucked. Consoles were for games. Then Netflix gets announced for the 360 and movies are ok. It's all cyclical.

Nice spin there lol. How are you enjoying your XBL "value"? I love how they justify the price of an XBL subscription by offering services that are free everywhere else. Facebook/twitter on PC, PS3, iphone, even wii, and just about any other device out there is FREE.

Just tried, it.

1. For some reason the output for the UI and movies defaults to 4:3???

2. The UI is almost exactly like Roku (but a bit clunkier to navigate).

3. I think it it is some kind of Java app.

Now I have to work out ow to stop it from defaulting to 4:3.

Edit: I will wait for the proper version to come out.

Edit2: This is almost certainly a a Blu-ray movie Java app. It behave just like a blu-ray where the video is the internet streaming portion.

Pressing the PS or select button shows the PS3 thinks it is a BR movie. I guess this was the only way to circumvent the MS agreement.

"Can add movies to instant queue from PS3 and shows all the same categories as the 360 version. Loads covers art slower but that could be on my end. Cover art is also larger. Can't compare the picture quality because my GF wants to watch the movie I started playing, but the quality does look great. The PS3 does load the movies quicker and show the title of the movie before it starts. You can also see the movies bitrate with the select button. I like the 360 interface better...not saying the PS3 version is bad. It's that I can browse through the movies quicker with the 360 version. It should be perfect for everyone that wants to watch movies though

*EDIT* OK found a faster way to browse my movies. Instead of using the large cover art you can press down on the D-pad and look at the movies with smaller cover art with the description of the movie. I like the rating system since I now know 3 stars is actually a good movie."
