The sales could be due to many reasons including games being made as ports, or games being short in the gameplay.

I should open up my wallet to buy all the shovelware the wii has? No thanks.

Reggie, it's not in HD. The hardcore gamer like myself will not buy it.

"The hardcore gamer like myself "

Thank common sense there is another definition for "hardcore" lying around somewhere.

Being in HD really has nothing to do with it. Nintendo forgot who made them and decided to make a system that doesn't cater to hardcore gamers. So when third party devs try to release a game made for hardcore gamers, it falls flat on its face because there isn't much of an audience for it on the system.

" Nintendo forgot who made them"

Miyamoto?

Nintendo always sold more to the casual crowd.
The GCN only sold 22 million, if you were to believe they were all hardcore gamers than you are just kidding yourself.
"casual" gamers are in the majority.

Is this all the support Nintendo can offer to third parties? Ask users to "open their wallets"?

Users: "No, we won't open our wallets."
Nintendo: "Oh okay. Now for more important news, Super Duper Wii Fit Sports Resort with Super Wii Motion Plus Two! Buy that instead!"
*Sells 8 million copies*

You know the joke is that in any other industry, where a monopoly on content sales was controlled by the producer of the content viewer, there would be complaints of bias and anti competitiveness.
No one complains when Sony products are principally selling Sony Columbia Tristar films and Sony Music.
Nintendo HAVE a monopoly because of their quality product, its that simple, and it is 3rd parties who are to blame for the lack of interest in their titles.

Dead Space probably would have sold well if it wasn't an on-rails shooter.

It also amazes me that it is hard to find in retailers. I've heard retailers have low or no copies on shelves at target and walmart.

That certainly doesn't help matters much.

Yeah, a six-hour long rail shooter without much replay incentive simply isn't worth $50. Core gamers will wait for a price drop, and more casual gamers trust a more established IP like HotD or RE's "Chronicle" games.

Hopefully Silent Hill sells well enough to show people that if you put in the effort, the market is there.

For Reggie, though...eh. He's probably frustrated, as are most in Nintendo, that third parties have offered so much shovelware. When good games come out, you'd hope they sell well. But it's not like MadWorld or Extraction were AAA titles.

I take Reggie's comment as an insult to my intelligence as a consumer. Thats a terrible and almost degrading choice of words, trying to make sales by literally asking someone to "open their wallet".

I'm not interested in a game who's main draw is excessive gore and absurd mutilations. I'm not interested in paying for a shooter that I have no reason to believe, from reading many different reviews, can come anywhere near Killzone 2. And if I really wanted a rail shooter, I would go with Darkside Chronicles as a blind choice, despite the fact that Umbrella Chronicles was a little mundane and faltered in the replayability department.

If you want your company to survive beyond the "hardware bubble" yall were foolish enough to create, maybe you should fire yourself and join Activision. That "open your wallet" comment would rub those guys the right way for sure.

Quoting Reggie from Wikipedia:

"First, how do you satisfy the core while still expanding appeal? And second, how do you leverage your strengths against entirely untapped audiences--to the so-called "blue oceans" in popular marketing speak? ... Provide a new product that actually underperforms on an established industry metric for "progress," and substitute an alternative that typically is smaller, less expensive and easier to use. Initially, the "core" of any industry will scoff. But if the product is right, enough new users will be attracted to form an alternative definition for progress.[7]

Sounds cute on paper but unfortunately, unlike your past corporate ventures, this philosophy is flawed and bound to tank. Brace yourself.

6 - Reggie,
I opened my wallet for Madworld and the Conduit. I am not going to spend the same money on rail shooters, rail shooters are rents. Always have been always will be. I've played Dead Space Extraction and I see no reason to own it. In fact EA needs to spend some time making full fledged games on wii. How much development time do you think DS Extraction maybe 1 year, 1 and a 1/2. When EA shows me a game where they made a deep effort to offer a full experience for not just the simplest of gamers then I might be persuaded.

Expect me to buy Modern warfare: reflex, tatsunoko vs capcom & Monster Hunter 3 since those are worthy endeavors to offer a quality product. I love a rail shooter, it's just I will not pay 50 bucks for one. For christ sakes... they are arcade affairs, typical rail shooter in an arcade can be beaten with $10 in quarters... not $50.

I completely agree here.

Rail shooters are a niche genre. Nothing against those that love 'em and will pay full price for 'em, but I won't. They just aren't that good a value.

I mean, I sunk 70 hours into Zelda...that's what, $0.71 cents an hour?

6 hours in Extraction works out to $8.33 an hour. With no replay factor for me.

I bought Conduit for the multiplayer, which adds dozens of hours and makes a FPS with a short campaign worth it.

Reggie should point to games like FF:CC or Shattered Memories. Those games don't look like you could start them after work and beat 'em before dinner.

7 - can't wait for
tatsunoko vs capcom.
that game should sell well, since it was brought over here by demand, plus capcom took the time and effort to add more characters, wifi, other unlockables, and rebalanced the cast, instead of just porting it over. kudos to you capcom.

hopefully people will look past
"whats a tatsunoko?!"
i have the 1st rev of the game, and its great. its a must buy for fighting fans.

as for my thoughts about why DS:E didn't sell well, look for a wii hate article, i'm sure i posted something there
>_>

sadly, last time i checked the devs said SH:SM is about 6 hours long. HOWEVER replay value is through the roof though, with all those psych test, and factors that change. hell you can ever change what the monster look like with what actions you take!(thats pretty cool, i think)
i am look forward to SH:SM!
