Unreal Dev Kit available for free

Epic Games has announced the launch of the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), a free edition of Unreal Engine 3 that provides community access to the award-winning toolset.

The software release is available to anyone interested in using 3D game engine technology, including game developers, students, hobbyists, researchers, creators of 3D visualizations and simulations, and digital filmmakers.

2 - Not a bad deal

Unreal engine is getting older now and devs with bigger budgets are moving on to other engines or Epics new engine. This gives a chance for people to make somthing with little or no money and if it's good they can get it released. Mod makers, dreamers, noobs, or artist can use this.

They can't do anything mind blowing like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Gears, Forza 3, MW2, Alan Wake or Splinter Cell but they can make what they dream. I like this idea it opens the community and gives people a chance to try. If you know 3 or 4 people willing to put some extra time in for a couple years you can make a game.

It probably wont be a $60 or $70 mega blockbuster but a $20 or $30 budget title with good gameplay can sell. I myself would by a game with great gameplay, art direction and story over graphics anyday.

3 - I read a list of engines based on their popularity not a while back...

Unreal is already the number one used engine and now it's free. I'm an advocate for a competitive marketplace, so this actually might be bad for competing engines. It might not affect Unreal NOW, but with similar tools in subsequent versions of the engine, its popularity will definitely result in an increase of use in the future.

Kind of a jerk move, in my opinion... why not give other engines a fighting chance...

Or kind of a genius move. Indie developers can't just come up with money out of a hat. This is going in the right direction. The most popular engine in the industry now free. How can that not spell win for everyone involved?

I'm glad for the indie devs, but I think their reasoning behind making it free is to increase the popularity of the next unreal engine, of which they'll already be familiar with.

Indie devs are the devs of the future and if all they know is the Unreal Engine, how can we expect other engines to compete?

Not to mention the fact that the Unreal Engine was arguably overused this generation. Aren't we furthering that by making it free?

How bout make the Crysis engine free, instead...

So you basicly want Epic to stop what their doing for the next 5 years, what they been doing for 15yrs to give other engines a chance. Thats like asking MS to stop making Windows so MAC and Linux can catch up. This isn't a hippie commune, this is a business and you want them to stop making smart business moves so other not so smart businesses can get a clue. I'm all for everyone being able to play at the game table, but you just can't be some new guy off the street who sits down at the champs table and expect equal play time.

3.4 - You're looking at this all wrong...

when you should look at an engine like this as paint or crayons. Everybody, that wants to, can be exposed to it, but not everyone is going to make the same painting or draw the same picture.

And you mention Crysis engine should've been made free. Uh, hello, not the same company. But as I'm typing this, I really have to wonder, who in their right mind would argue with a free engine let alone arguably the best engine out there. Not even the Embryo engine is free...

@ Double Toasted - You make a good point. It's just a medium for creating and the result could vary from dev to dev.

I know it's a great business move by Epic. And of course I know Crysis is owned by another company.

I'm just thinking that from moves like this, sprouts monopolies, which can be abusive to the competitive market. If something like this did happen, eventually, I assume it would have to be regulated in order for other companies to have some kind of foothold on this growing industry.

But, yes, we all know it's good for everyone else...

That's supposed to be for developer workstations. Haven't you ever watched any developer interview videos? They all tend to have very large screens with very powerful systems.

You do not want to develop games on a machine that will be barely enough to run the resulting software. You'd probably want 4x extra power for debugging, and testing.

That's what I, and what most people have... so i dunno... $200 for an 8GB RAM upgrade and a $300 for a NVIDIA 8000 series video card...
