Sony: "New IP is the lifeblood of the industry."

Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Europe's Senior Vice President, Michael Denny, believes that original games are hugely important in today's games industry.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Liverpool this morning, Denny said: "We must support new IP creation to survive as an industry. Consumers crave new things. If we want to stay relevant in an increasingly competitive marketplace, we need to promote new ideas."

"New IP truly is the lifeblood of the industry," he continued.

Denny cited Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain, which Resolution Magazine previewed yesterday, as an example of a high-quality, innovative idea on Sony's publishing schedule.

In his talk about what Sony looks for when working with independent development houses, Denny said: "We try not to be too prescriptive. Clearly, issuing guidelines is a good thing, but we always want to leave room for disruptive titles."

1 - as they have proven this gen...not just with new IPs like uncharted but risky titles like
LBP and of course heavy rain, nintendo have innovated hardware wise this gen but software not so much unless you include wii-fit which isnt really a game but nintendo are still very talented, and microsoft is just microsoft...they have never been risky with titles its always a title in a firm proven genre.. shooter, racing, rpg etc (actually getting some 1st party studios might change that lack of creativity)

New IP's are why I like titles from Sony.

They don't rely on the same old type of stuff. I'm not saying that many sequels are bad, because many companies do get them right.

Just, new characters, stories, game play types, atmosphere are what we need more of.

Ya, I have to say I agree.

I mean when this gen started, to be honest I was a lot more interested in the new IP's that were being shown then the old stuff.

I think with the power of the HD consoles, they should be looking for every opportunity to take advantage of the new tech. I think sometimes that can be hard to do with old IPs' because they tend to have trade marks in their gameplay that everyone is use to and it's always a gamble if they try to change that if the fans will be happy with it or not.

it's a lot easier to try new stuff with a new IP. And frankly, some of the old games with their stories just need to be laid to rest now.

I still wish there was some news on The Outsider.

we need new IPs. Sony has been supporting lots'a new IPs. Flower, LBP, Uncharted, Fat Princess come to mind...

I love Sony for their awesome exclusive titles. they all have quality. even if someone hates the Sony exclusive title, better ones keep coming up. i think the media is by now tired of "hating" sony exclusives. if you can't beat them join them. q:

1.9 - The problem with new IPs is....
....they are a double edge sword. If they succeed then yes they are the lifeblood, but If they fail they just become an hemorrhaging artery. Considering that very few new IPs are hugely successful it's not hard to see why most publishers, including Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, are pumping out sequels.

Somebody less lazy than me care to count how many successful new IPs vs. sequels this gen on all platforms. Please no "my console has more than yours" lists. Save it for the open zone.

Thank you BaschPS3. Anybody for the sequels?

linger in shadows,eyepet,heavy rain,eye of judgement,fat princess,LBP,last guardian,warhawk,MAG,folklore, pain, flower,pixel junk series,afrika,modnation racer..

then theres the less risky but NEW IPs like..motorstorm,uncharted,res istance, heavenly sword, demon souls, infamous,WKC

name me in the four years that 360 has been on the market a risky new IP that microsoft have released on disc this gen?

Sure. No problem 1.9

Uncharted
LittleBigPlanet
Mass Effect
Dead Space
No More Heroes
BlazBlue
Resistance
inFAMOUS
Gears of War
Assassin's Creed
Dragon Age
BioShock
Rock Band

It's actually a pretty extensive list. Sony and Microsoft have both been doing much better than Nintendo in terms of new IPs. And those are just for games already out. Of course, Sony provides the most support, but Microsoft should be congratulated for at least trying compared to Nintendo.

1.12 - Sony can take more risks
The Playstation business has been lights out for years now. When they first started out, you didn't see half as many risks being taken with new 1st party IPs. 3rd party games ruled the PS brand for years.

I'm sure the money they made off of the PS1 and PS2 after paved the way for all of the risks they've been able to take this gen. They have huge brand awareness. When most people think of gaming, they think "Playstation."

1.14 - Yes, and that's why the gaming media had been so harsh and tried to kill off many new PS3 exclusive IPs especially the ones that were inhouse.
This is what drives console sales in the long run. Next gen gamers will be looking forward to the new UC, Motorstorm, LBP, Demon Souls, WKS, Resistance etc etc all these games that didn't exist last gen and then they'll be new games out with new gameplay mechanics, themes and atmosphere.

MS has brought out a lot of new IPs too this gen but a vast majority of them come off as stale old gaming in new skin and gamers see right through them.

Sony tries a lot to push gaming experiences and it ticked me off when I saw so many media outlets trying to derail all these great new IPs. Remember "haha, it's just dude raider, nothing special" Now had Uncharted not done well commercially we wouldn't have gotten UC2 now would we.

We'll get Heavenly Sword2 soon but this was a new 1st gen IP and all media outlets spewed was "it's length, it's length, it's length!" and the put off many gamers when in fact, it's quality for a 1st gen title was off the chain and obviously a sequel would have been (will be) much longer in length if supported right. I have seen many games given high 9s that has the same length as Heaven Sword too but because HS didn't have a MP they dogged it on length.

Look at Lair, had we supported it and not let these editorial reviews derail our experiences can you imagine a Lair 2? with more refined controls and options, MP with thousands of Dragons battling in the skies online and co-op? Do we have a good fantasy Dragon game this gen? No we don't and who should we blame? Our own selves. Just look at Uncharted1 with no online and it's presentation and look at Uncharted2 now.

This is why I keep telling young gamers to ignore these gaming sites and take their veiws with a massive pinch of salt ESPECIALLY if you're a PS3 gamer. They just manipulate you for their own business incentives. They don't give a damn about informing you properly most of the time.

So in future, if you see a game you like and you've seen enough gameplay vids and interviews for yourself, go out and support the game even if it's by rental. Don't let these editorial reviews dedicate and control how we game cause if it was up to them, we would likely never have KZ2, UC2, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, etc etc

4.1 - Whatever man
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

When the next Ratchet (if there is one), Uncharted, Resistance, and Killzone come, won't you be there to play it? They can make 10 sequels to these games for all I care. As long as they are top notch and fun, I'll be there play it.

For every Ratchet, Uncharted, Resistance, and Killzone there will also be new IPs like Demon's Souls, Heavy Rain, The Last Gaurdian, Mod Nation Racers, Agent, White Night Chronicles, and MAG. For every PS3 exclusive sequel you name I can name just as many PS3 exclusive brand new IPs. You can't do that with the Xbox. Prove me wrong.

4.3 - Okay
Besides the fact the some of those games haven't even come out yet, or are guaranteed to be hits, I still don't mind playing sequels to my favorite games as long as they are good.

Having a bunch of new things franchises to experience is nice, but that means nothing to me if I don't care about playing it, or if the games aren't any good.

If Sony stopped making brand new franchises, and just stuck to releasing a new God of War, and the other games I mentioned, then I'd be okay with that. I like those games, and will buy the sequels to those games as long as they continue making them and they are good.

I'm not really here to compare who has more exclusive games. Games are games. If you have the console to play it on, then play it.

7 - halo gears... halo gears.. to be quite honest Mark Rein said there is no more gears on the 360
the enxt will come out at the dawn of the next xbox... he said this was the case at TGS09 as it was the best way to grow the platform's franchise and show new things,... thats why in a span of 2 short years we'll have had 3 halo games between now and 2010... Halo Wars, Halo 3:ODST, and the Halo Reach, which i'm sure will be working in conjunction with Natal.

but i agree, Sony's pretty good at Innovating. they've released new IPs from there own studio's and have released Sequels to existing Franchises from the past...

Resistance, Infamous, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, LBP, Soon the Last Gaurdian, WKC, Warhawk, MAG, MotorStorm, eyepet, Eye of Judgement, folklore, demon's souls, 3d dot hero, quantum, HeavyRain there's just too many.

and then PS2 franchises that have or are making next gen debuts

Ratchet, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Buzz, Singstar, God of War, Socom, Hot shots golf, Siphon Filter. it's just too much to keep up with.

and their PSN Network is littered with some fun new original games that you simply wont find anywhere else. Not just arcade ports from classic consoles but new fresh ideas, Fat princess, pixel Junk series, everyday shooter, calling all cars, and full downloadable games that could go on as retail games, like Warhawk, Burnout, GT, Socom, they move the industry forward. you gotta hand it to them, they have become a giant in all facets of Gaming today more so than they were in the PS2 era...

Sony's the sh!t

8 - If microsoft can't think of new IPs...
they just pull out the cheque book, pay and make curent exclusives multiplatform. Simple as that.

Their fast party studios are so lacking in quality and depth they should just call their cheque book a studio for "making" games on the 360.

I mean, 360 doesn't have 30+ million consoles out there or nothing. Microsoft has to buy everything. Who cares how many consoles are out there. 3rd party publishers don't care about money, only loyalty!

New IP's are a big reason I love being a Playstation owner. How many great gaming franchises were brought to us via a Playstation console? We'd be here counting them for a while.

Even this gen we've got Uncharted which is amazing, LBP is probably the most innovative title/genre in a very long time. Heavy Rain looks to do something kinda new and then Modnation Racers just has me excited because it looks awesome and I can see me putting some serious hours into that game.

Sony's committment to this kind of thing is why they are the industry leader, at least to me.

Yea, we'd definitely be here for a while.

Along the way, we might even run into people saying, "Derr, Sony monopolized the gaming industry back then. This gen is different!" However, that wouldn't change the fact that Uncharted and Little Big Planet are stellar new IP's.

I'm just glad that there will be more new IP's too come. Heavy Rain and Mod Nation Racers are in my top 5 most anticipated games of 2010, and one of the reasons is because they're new IP's.

of profitable xbox business, I'm sure you will start to see more and more new IPs for the brand. You do realize that it takes quite a bit of money and risk to put out unproven games, right?

If Microsoft really raises their brand awareness, and they aren't making a better effort in releasing new 1st experiences by the next gen, then okay, let's call foul.

Sony has had 2 generation of successful home consoles to build off of. Their first party success didn't happen overnight. It took time. Its a process, with a lot of factors involved.

15 - Rather obvious isn't..
New IP's are important, but increasingly difficult to make since it almost feels like everything has been done before. Old stories always manage to dry up only games who managed to create and expand on their universe managed to have good sequels. Not to mention the costs and riks involved in creating new IP's.

That is one of the main reasons why I welcome the sony "wand"and microsoft "natal"since these add-ons (which they are) could provide a new platform for new IP's.

It's hard to impress people with things that have already been done except if you kick the graphics up a few notches, but there is always a limit financial and tecnical wise.

20 - i agree.
i also think that Sony innovated and took risks with their hardware also this generation:

HDD standard in every unit, even though that added to the high price of the console. they could have offered an HDD-less model, but knew how important it would be in the future.

Built in Wi Fi in every unit; it's not a necessity, but i certainly enjoy having it, and my PS3 is connected wirelessly NOW, because my router is too far from my HDTV to run a cord to it.

HDMI in every unit from the get go, even though HDMI was not yet the standard by which HD media is best displayed.

Built in Blu Ray drive in every unit, making it possible for gamers to instantly get HD movies and larger, more detailed games, with incredible audio and visual detail (the textures in Uncharted 1 and 2 are second to none, as well as the audio, and that simply wouldn't have been possible if they didn't have a 25gig Blu Ray to put it on). it was a risk because Blu Ray was unproven, and the format war was up in the air. if HD DVD had one, Sony would have been VERY crippled, at least as far as movies were concerned (the games would have still shipped on Blu Ray's, i'm sure).

Free online. Microsoft is making a KILLING on Xbox LIVE, and Sony COULD have charged for the PSN, but with the very limited feature set of the PSN at the beginning, i don't think any consumer would have paid for it. now, however, the PSN is rivaling LIVE feature for feature (barring cross game chat), and yet they still keep it free. that's a risk no matter how you try and spin it. Sony makes money on the PSN via the services it offers (movies/tvshows/games/etc), and not by charging it's consumers for the "privilege" of playing online with friends. this frees up consumer's dollars to buy more products on the service, which is how ALL parties involved make their money.

Cell architecture itself. much like the PS2, the PS3 is an unconventional platform to develop games on. this alienated quite a few developers (ie, Valve), but for those developers that have been willing to take up the challenge, we have been treated to some truly one of a kind games, even though they may be in established genres (ie, MGS4, LBP, Killzone 2, Uncharted series, etc, etc).

Sony took a lot of LONG TERM risks this generation. they didn't simply go for the quick return like Microsoft, or the low-cost route like Nintendo (essentially repacking the Gamecube and making it novel by adding a new control mechanism). they went all out with the PS3, knowing that if it worked, the rewards would be HUGE.

it looks to me like that risk is paying off. they sold nearly 30 million consoles at a price nearly DOUBLE the price of the nearest competition, and now that it's the same price, the PS3 is flying off of the shelves. couple that with all the new IPs and returning franchises that developers have taken the time to TRULY tap into the unconventional PS3 hardware, and you have consumers that are finding it EXTREMELY hard to deny picking up a PS3. price and games. those are two of the biggest deciding factors when it comes to purchasing a games console.

the PS3 has BOTH, while the competition seems to be struggling with the direction they want to go in next.

the PS3 is following the same path as the PS1 and PS2. only those who have not been following Sony for the past 15 years didn't see it.
