I'm kind of in the same boat as you ceedubya.

I want to upgrade to the 120gig Elite sometime over the holidays, but I'm unsure if Microsoft are going to give the 360 some kind of overhaul in the near future.

Also waiting to see if theres going to be a Mass Effect 2 bundle.

Yeah that 148.00 blu ray player is looking pretty good. I was going to get another ps3 for a blu ray watching, but now will get that 148.00 Sony player or wait for a 99.00 black friday player.

I don't care if they slash the price to $99...i rather picked up a ps2 slim.If it even drops to $99 at all. That would only show it is a last gen piece of hardware that was overpriced to begin with and is now competing with another console that is 10years old....yeah Sony is the one in trouble...harhar. good laugh.Seriously

A ps2 slim over a 99.00 arcade model? Have fun with those 480p games and that awesome Dolby pro logic 2, and those wired controllers.

I would pay money to see you pay 99.00 for a ps2 slim over a 99.00 arcade.

Lol...

So many Sonyfans leaving comments that it's bad for the industry for MS to be dropping the price... Lol! Probably the same butthurt fans that paid $599 for their ps3.

What you kids fail to realize is that if the Elite dropped $100, then what's stopping MS from dropping $100 off the arcade???
This is why the 360 will win this gen. An arcade at $99 will squash the PS3 and Wii without a doubt.

Think about it, a kid can start playing COD: MW2 for as little as $160.... compared to $360 for the ps3

Kind of like how the 360 was out sold by the wii when they were about equal prices? 360s reputation from RROD and E74 have finally caught up to it. The only people still buying are the completely uniformed or the die hard MS fans. I was at Best Buy and watched the Floor Rep look at a Father and Son and tell them the down side of the 360 when they asked. Took 30 secs for them to wander over and unlock the PS3 case and head up front with 3 games.

4 - And so it begins..AH! the holidays...
Appears that little Timmy is watching over the fence to see Bobby has some new toys to play.

Mom say's "You can't go over to Bobby's and play"
Little Timmy pouts "Why?"
Just because, that's why. replied Mom

MS does not want Gold member's looking at Platinum trophies.

Timmy finally snuck over to Bobby's later that day.

As the moon begins to rise, Timmy walks slowly home, shouting back to Bobby. " hey can I come over tomorrow?

Bobby Smile's with respect " Sure, you bet. We can play my new Co-Op game, purchased with the $50.00 I just saved with Free Online gaming.

"MS does not want Gold member's looking at Platinum trophies."
- You get Platinum trophies for getting every trophy in the game, right? Their is a way to track how many games you have 100% achievements on Live, so why would MS care? (I have the equivalent of 2 Platinum's)

5 - Riot Much?
We all know how insane Black Friday shoppers can be. Besides, the holidays are all about "stuff" and nothing else to most folks. Good luck being in that line 24hrs in advance to be one of the ten who will get in on this so-called deal to turn around and have to buy a hdd for $100, or how about a wifi adapter?

The ps3 has one that I had to buy(would have rather had the choice) Wired gaming is much more reliable. All those wifi signals give you cancer anyway. PS3 gives you cancer guys- for free. It only does everything-j/k

6 - granted this is more of a Walmart deal, but i have to say to
certain people that keep saying, "MS has enough money to keep dropping the price": How fricking NAIVE are YOU?

this is NOT a charity. it is a BUSINESS. Microsoft does NOT want to drop the price. Sony does NOT want to drop the price. Nintendo does NOT want to drop the price.

believe me, if people were willing to buy the $400 Elite 360, the $600 PS3, and the $250 Wii in the volumes that they are buying them now at their current prices of $199, $299, and $199 respectively, they would NEVER lower the price.

with that said, there has to be a balance and flow to price drops. something Microsoft doesn't seem to be very good at.

if Microsoft had any confidence in their position, they would have kept their $299 price point UNTIL Sony dropped the PS3 to $299, THEN, as a response, drop the arcade to $199, (making it cheaper than the Wii), and introduce the Elite Sku for $299.

that way, they'd have a lot more leeway to play with price should Sony attempt another price cut next year.

but now what moves do they have that will still garner them some profitability? if they drop the price of the Arcade to $99, or even $150, that's hurting THEM, not Sony.

the goal of a business is to make as much profit as possible, not win console war battles on the internet.

Microsoft and Sony aren't jockeying for position so we can have something to debate here on N4G.

Microsoft has backed THEMSELVES into a corner with the Arcade SKU.

also remember that on a consumer subconscious level, price means quality. a $99 Arcade screams "CHEAP!" to a consumer's subconscious.

next year, Sony could potentially drop the PS3 to $250 (i doubt they'll go a full $100 price drop next time they decide to drop the price), and people would still equate it with quality. and they get a Blu Ray player to boot.

one of my best friends just recently bought a PS3, HDTV, and some games for $650. the PS3 was $289 and came with Transformers on Blu Ray, and the HDTV was $220 (it's a 22" Samsung monitor that was normally $400, but Fry's Electronics here in Los Angeles had it going for a great deal).

the point of that story is to illustrate that one of the major barriers in choosing a next gen platform was HDTV adoption. the costs were too high. now there are HDTVs for less than $300.

when choosing a gaming console to compliment that HDTV, would you go with a 360, that:

has a limited number of exclusive games to play.
has no built in Wi Fi if you need it (i DO; my TV and router are too far away, so my 360 either has to be wired, or not connected at all).
has no standard HDD if you go with the $199 unit, meaning you won't be able to store all those movies/music/games you may want to buy off of Xbox LIVE Marketplace.
has no built in HD movie player, meaning you are only getting HALF of the use out of your HDTV that you COULD be getting.
has a fee for playing online in the form of Xbox LIVE.

OR, would you go with a PS3 that:

has a lot of exclusive games not found on any other platform, PC or console.
has a built in Wi Fi adapter for convenience.
has a standard, and rather large HDD for storing the movies/music/games you may buy off of the PSN.
has a built in Blu Ray player, so you an enjoy HD movies on your TV, as well as HD games.
has free online.
has a built in web browser, which is a lot more useful than it initially seems (i didn't think i'd ever use the web browser on the PS3, but i've found myself using it quite a bit when too lazy to get out of bed and go to my computer. i also find it amusing to check my mail on a 40" HDTV)

most smart consumers are looking for bang for their buck, and even if they went with the $300 360, they are still missing out on features like the Wi Fi adapter, web browser, and Blu Ray player.

if i didn't already own an Xbox 360 or PS3, and i was in the market for a new console to go with the new HDTV i bought, i'd go with the PS3 all the way. and that is what we HAVE been seeing ever since the PS3 got it's price drop.

the 360 has been $199 for over a year now, and it had a spike when that price drop happened, but it's cooled down significantly since then, meaning that price isn't the factor keeping people from buying the 360 like they were last holiday season; it's GAME selection, and the 360 has been lacking significantly this year.

in my opinion, 2007 was the best year the 360 has had, and it's been a steady decline ever since (only Fable 2 and Gears 2 were of note last year; Banjo was disappointing, sadly; this year was only Halo 3: ODST, and Forza 3, and they didn't arrive until the end of the year).

the PS3 has been gaining momentum due to a strong software lineup YEAR LONG, and the perfectly timed price cut was what pushed consumers over the edge and into purchasing a PS3.

Microsoft, if they want to remain profitable, CAN'T play the price card again. not so soon after the LAST price card they played (which was after the PS3 dropped it's price). the only card left to play is the games card, and they don't have much in that regard outside of more sequels, and Alan Wake, which, while i'm excited about, i'm not sure how it's going to turn out given it's incredibly long development time and numerous delays (yes, Killzone 2 took 4+ years, but it was never delayed as many times as Alan Wake. in truth, Killzone 2 wasn't really delayed, since it never had a release date to begin with).

i wouldn't count Microsoft out, but their momentum has clearly been in decline for a long time now, and it's all due to lack of a strong lineup of EXCLUSIVE games. Sony has 30 first and second party studios cranking away on games, while MS has total, 6 or 7 first AND second party studios cranking away on games, with the most anticipated titles coming from 3rd parties, meaning exclusivity is NEVER certain (ie, Mass Effect, Splinter Cell, and Gears of War could eventually make it to the PS3, while Uncharted, Ratchet, Killzone, etc, will NEVER be on a non-Playstation platform).

6.2 - i want you to listen very carefully, because this is very simple:
i didn't mention the PS3 making a profit because it HASN'T YET.

the whole POINT of my post is that Microsoft HAS made a profit, but if they continue to slash the price whenever they feel intimidated by what the competition is doing, they WILL go back into the red, and begin to lose profit.

the whole point of my post is that, despite Microsoft being made of money, they are trying to CONTINUE to make money on the 360.

they need a new strategy beyond just slashing the price on their console, because eventually, that will not be good for their bottom line, which is, in the end, what the investors care about more than any of us.

Sony is Sony. they know how to leverage what they have to make money, and even though they are still losing money on PS3's sold, the large amount of first and second party titles they produce, as well as their various other industry they have integrated into the PS3 (movies/music/Blu Ray, etc), they are able to make a profit on software and services. eventually, the hardware profit will come. as they stated as recently as last week; they expect to make a profit on the hardware next year.

it's hard to argue against it when they are a manufacturing company, and are well experienced in production of consumer electronics.

hope that clears up your confusion.

Curious about a couple of things. What hapens if you buy multiple consoles? Say you managed to buy 2 arcades, is one essentially free? Also, can anyone confirm if other retailers like best Buy or Target will match this offer?

You'll need both of those bad boys to keep 1 decent 360 running in your house. You'll definately need a backup, best idea yet, all the while Microsoft logs in two sales when they actually sold one and gave one away.

I find it funny how when Microsoft has a price cut or premium offer people start yelling "desperate" but when Sony frantically cuts features and price as fast as possible people call it a "plan". The whole thing is rather pathetic. What gamer in their right mind wouldn't want to pick up a console at an awesome deal price? Microsoft's XBox division has been posting great profits, so why shouldn't they offer a premium to purchase the system? It makes perfect sense, especially as a very limited offer.

Is Sony desperate for offering a $148 Blu-Ray player? Or is that part of the "plan"? Is HP desperate because they're offering a $300 laptop? Bunch of morons.

12.1 - Here we go...
That's because, while most people tend to deny that sales and prices matter, it's in peoples blood to care about such things. The PS3 not only has a hard time making profits, but all it's done is lose money, which is the reason why people on this site continue to try and say that sales don't matter. Of course, whenever the PS3 has some nice little boost for the 3 months that it usually lasts, they say "The king is back!", "The black beast is going to overthrow all!", and none of this ever really happens.

So, in the end, sales are left out of the average Playstation fanatic's argument simply due to the fact that the majority of time, the Playstation 3 is doing absolutely horrible in a financial state, and honestly, there's no way to say otherwise. In-house software hardly sells on the console. Only on those rare occasions do you actually see one of the SCE-funded titles become a great source of profit.

We call this... the double standard, and it's a b*tch.

Another thing I'm shocked about, is the fact that the mods even allow these comments in here. They say to "leave your fanboyism at the door", yet, every article pertaining to the Wii, 360 or PC has at least (at least...) 3-5 Playstation fans talking about something that's either:

-Off topic
-An extreme double standard

I place them around the Apple Fanboys with the trolling... sickening, really. You know what I think it is? I think it's the torment that they endured from when the other idiotic fanboys beat them around like a step child when the PS3 released, so now, any sort of negative feedback sends them into an irrational rant.

I expect to honestly be hated for such a comment being written.

Walmart do this periodically with gift cards. They gave out a $100 giftcard for the PS3 last MAY.

It is just a promotion to attract buyers to the store. It is sad that the PS3 fanboys are all over this without knowing how promotion is run.

Ps3 fanboys just makes me laugh.

with 360 having all the huge games people want to play - Halo, GTA, Left4Dead and Forza plus this price, Sony is screwed

sony cant afford to drop price anymore, they're already losing billions on ps3

============================= ===========================

actually the new ps3 slim is much more offardable for sony and reduced 50% of the cost for the original. Besides with great games like demon soul ratchet gt5 eyepet god of war MAG heavy rain uncharted 2 all coming up soon or already came up is much more than what 360 has to offer. GTA is a DLC for 360 you noob.

I think if you look at it from real gamers perspective who are playing ps2 games still it is a steal. The only people not happy to see this kind of deal are the ones who have sidelined themselves with sony only. Ps2 has been for 99$ for quite a while and still kicking buts so why not 360? IT has better games, better graphics more features.

The worried opposition is filling up the comments with nonsense. Any neutral gamer not having a 360 would love to buy it this cheap and get straight into HD gaming.

16.1 - LOL!!! MS is doing alot to sell great numbers this fall. at 299 and the slim Thats all the PS3 and Sony needs to do fine.
we'll see this black friday. and evenmore in christmas..

i gotta say. it was price drops after price drops for the 360, then bundles, and mail in rebates now more bundles and $100 discounts... all this because Sony Sold 1.3 million more PS3'sin quarter 2 than MS did for their 360. and this happend all in the span of a month... dirty tactics i suppose but Sony still as room for 2 more price cuts. Next year the Arcade will be 100 bucks. the sad thing is. even in it's low price the 360 has never nce sold more than the Wii who up till now has been more expensive than the 360 in it's pricing when the 360 became $200. yet Sony dropped the price of the PS3 and they totally outsold both MS and Ninty even with price cuts from them both... the brand is too much as is for MS and Ninty.

So i'd say Sony Did pretty Good. and will continue to sell even better this holiday season. this price cut will last them for another 2 years.. by then it'll be a 199 PS3 Slim at 250g and that Will be when the Console rockets into the stratusphere. rightnow it's just flying high on cruise control. Its funny. I bought my PS3 from Walmart before the slim was out. It came with a $100 gift card. So I bought a game and another controller.

Its funny how Sony can do no harm, but MS is the devil.

So ill leave it up to you PS3 fanboys. Is Walmart responsible for a gift card promotion, or is MS doing exactly what Sony already has done to get me to buy a PS3?

MS may be worried about the 360 not doing so well, but I can guarantee Sony used to be a lot more desperate.
