Infinity Ward On Dedicated Servers

The 2 biggest controversies surrounding Infinity Ward's highly-anticipated upcoming first-person shooter, Modern Warfare 2, are the lack of dedicated servers for PC gamers and the rumored lack of Party Chat for Xbox 360 users. With just one week away from release it's unlikely we'll see anything change before then, which has a rather large group of gamers upset. Mackey McCandlish and Ryan Lastimosa of Infinity Ward recently took part in a live chat with the BestBuy.com community. Here's what they have to say about dedicated servers and their replacement IWnet.

When i was reading this interview i felt that they were saying the same thing again and again "Yes, we believe MW2 is better than CoD4:MW. The reason iw.net exists is to improve the gameplay for our users.,Yes, we believe MW2 is better than CoD4:MW. The reason iw.net exists is to improve the gameplay for our users.,Yes, we believe MW2 is better than CoD4:MW. The reason iw.net exists is to improve the gameplay for our users." They honestly have nothing better to say?

lack of party chat...there must be like a gazillion 360 owners who wont buy MW because of this..after all this is the one live feature they run up the flag pole as being the biggest diff between Live and PSN..so I guess its so impt. they wont buy MW now...

Not lack. It's disabled for certain game modes to abide by the game rules they want to enforce for those modes. For instance, in team deathmatch, they wont let dead team members talk to live ones. This is done to prevent dead members telling their team what the other team is doing. Games like free for all wont have private chats disabled.

My brother is buying this for the PS3 but even then I probably still won't play it.

IW were good devs but it seems fame and money have ruined them.

Shame on you IW/Activision.

5 - Why such a fuss???
I don't see the problem here if this prevents cheating then it's a good thing. MW on 360 has 18 players with 0 lag and matchmaking works great. I don't own a PS3 yet and don't own a PC that can play MW 1/2 yet so I have no opinion about that.

It's not like the multiplayer was broken and people couldn't plsy. By what I have read about this, cheating was a big problem on PC and PS3 so the only people that would complain would be the cheaters. My computer will play older Battlefield games and cheating is a cancer but servers can host matches with alot of players. MW doesn't have rooms with that many players.

As far as removing party chat goes it isn't such a bad idea in ranked games but could be a problem in player matches. I guess 360 users will decide if removing party chat is a bad idea in the long run.

I see alot of PS3 users complaining about this but I just don't see how it effects you. Reading some of these comments just reminds me of the fact that people will cry and moan about every little thing. MW isn't about big 62 player matches so it's about 8 to 18 player matches so WTF?

judging by your name you have never experienced a real game on pc.

No matter what anti hacking software they use on pc, there will ALWAYS be cheaters.

I've played cod4 on every system and to tell you the truth, the consoles versions are the worst. I've matched with ppl in germany 4 games in a row. I had red bar ping for almost every game.
When I even get perfect 4 bar ping the game fells like 150 ping on pc would(which is garbage)

I know what your thinking, "Your connection is trash". Right after playing 4 germany host I go on my pc, join a cod4 server with 22 ping and game runs flawlessly.

I'm sorry, but if you think playing on LIVE or PSN is lag free, you don't know what lag free means. I can tell when my ping is over 100 without even looking. There is a HUGE advantage to players with better pings with is what the host will have and even if everyone had the same 150+ ping, it still feels like garbage because of the delay.

If you're in a clan with players spread across the world, you can forget about playing together because the pings will be so horrible.

Also, there won't be any mod support so you can forget about this game staying fresh for very long. FPS PC games have very long lives simply due to the fact that modders can make new maps, weapons, gametypes, etc. This alone decreases the value of the game.

Finally, cheating is everywhere. PC, PSN, LIVE. It's just a fact of life. That's why there are moderators to monitor this stuff. Now that we won't have dedis, you can forget having any moderators. There will be cheating even on IW.NET. Count on it.

Does everyone truly believe that IW is trying screw thousands of gamers over by not having dedicated servers? With all the thousands of people boycotting and screaming about how horrible it is, they put there foot down, and said NO were NOT changing it. Since everyone here is a pc gamer then you all know how much it sucks being on servers with cheaters/hackers. It seems to me that after the horrible hacking with CoD4 , there stepping it up and are giving the big middle finger to the cheaters. Everyone else seems to think that they want to screw us all over. Realize how it would feel to be doing your best to develop a game an give the gamers the BEST experience possible, and then having 200k + people telling you your wrong? And then on top of that, coming back and saying, no, were not. Also know that they aren't trying to make a bad game, bad reviews of multiplier WIll hurt them, so why would they be trying to F*** us all?

has the video game market gotten so big that gamers can now tell developers how to develop their game, and what's best? Its like telling Picasso do paint differently, or tell Mozart to rearrange his music....this is their art, if you like it, purchase it...if not, then don't. But at the end of the day...let it go...unless some how your life is hinged on a $60 dollar game. Such strong entitlements people have...

Because IW.net(p2p) will totally prevent all sorts of cheating from taking place right? If you believe that, i have a bridge to sell you. seriously.

In the end, this decision basically prevents any sort of coherent MW2 community from ever forming. I'm not sure this is the best business practice, but apparently IW/AV wants to find out this answer. I would think that inherently this would NOT be the case as there currently still exists dedicated servers for CS which is 10yrs old at this point...

And this is customers telling their prospective company that they will not purchase the product which they are selling in the current state. In fact its (hopefully) north of 150,000 customers (me being one of them), which translates to $9,000,000.00. And while nobody's life is hinged on a $60 game, hopefully a 9 million dollar loss in revenue is enough for a company to take notice about an essential product feature for the PC platform.

11.3 - Couple of quick points..
just because somebody says they are going to boycott a game, does not necessarily mean they will...I would not necessarily put much stock in those numbers. Also, companies do not make the full $60 off the games, so even the sales figures for revenue would be inaccurate. But even then you have to ask yourself, if IW is at risk of losing such revenue, and still feels justified in what they are doing.........then perhaps they know something that we don't know.

Keep telling yourself that cheaters are the reason they are doing IWNET. Have you played a game on steam? L4D or TF2? They are going to use the same anti-cheat measures that this game will use and both those games have cheating. This will not fix cheating at all.

The real reason they are doing this is purely profits. The PC market share for this game is very small when compared to the consoles so they don't really care what the PC consumers have to say because they know that in the end, their money mainly comes from the consoles.

On top of that, they will be able to charge for DLC on PC due to this.

Also, Sitdown, do you know nothing about marketing? The market/consumer is EXACTLY what tells producers how and what to make. This is nothing new. The consumer should and does tell the producer how to make their products because if they don't, the producer won't sell any product.

If a chef makes a fancy dish and the consumer doesn't like the way it tastes, he'd better change the way it tastes or the consumer won't buy the food anymore. Even if the chef thinks the dish is perfect the way it is, he'd better change it.

Because the PC market is so small though, I doubt IW will do a thing simply because they will be able to be highly profitable simply based on console sales.

11.5 - @Veni Vidi Vici
I think you should ask yourself the question first, "do you know nothing about marketing"? Part of marketing is to get people to purchase your product, if your product was always determined by the market/consumer...then they would just freely purchase it without the need for "marketing". As much as you would like us to believe through your restaurant example, the market/consumer does not always dictate what a producer does. Again...look at Picasso...Mozart. You might not know this...but not everybody chases money, and some artist are more concerned with their vision being realized...and as a result, their product is purchased because of their vision. Is bluray a result of consumers saying they needed clearer movies? Are tvs at their current state because of consumer demand? I am thinking not likely...the competitive nature of business cause them to put in the time and energy to deliver a better product so they outsell their competition...not necessarily because consumers asked for it. Now to close this out...let me show you how you shut down your own statement.

"The consumer should and does tell the producer how to make their products because if they don't, the producer won't sell any product.....Because the PC market is so small though, I doubt IW will do a thing simply because they will be able to be highly profitable simply based on console sales."

So what does your statement say? The PC market will not be telling the producer how to make their game.

I remember thinking when the original COD came out that it was just another Medal of Honor imposter. But when I played it, I loved it. My friends and I played it online so much we pitched in together and bought our own server. Sadly, it looks like I won't be playing IW's latest game.

17 - Conspiracy theories
Conspiracy theories:

#1 - Treyarch beat them to the punch with WaW, PC friends list.

The online differences between MW1 and W@W are small, outside of gametypes they are pretty much the same thing. But the one key addition that Treyarch implemented in the PC version was a friends list. They essentially completed the online package for PC, think back to MW1 online if you could ask for an upgrade what would it be? Many of you would say a friends list that way you wouldn't have to Aim or email your buddy, you could just launch the game and see if their on. Since Treyarch already added that into the game, Never in a billion years would they use the same system of a "lesser" developer
they are to "Proud" to do so.

#2 they don't want to be bothered with PC sponsorship deals.

When a Multi-plat game is released on PC, PC users usually get DLC for free through sponsorship deals, whenever PC users DL a patch for a DLC update that update usually comes with a new splash screen. either an Intel, Nvidia, Ati, who ever the sponsor is for that DLC pack is. With IWnet, IW has the choice (and will) to charge the PC community for DLC, since the user will have no other choice since sponsorship deals will most likely not be apart of any PC DLC.

These are my main 2 points for IW cornholing the PC user base feel free to add anything else.

17.2 - True but.....
there was already a deal in place. Not sure if it was changed, but when the game first launched on PC there was a video option for a Sli setting, not dual video but SLi. To most it wouldn't mean much except that ATI cards also had Crossfire setups that were pretty much ignored at the launch of the game. The game was optimized for Nvidia chipsets and setups, there for I'm pretty sure they flipped the bill for the map pack on PC.

they are almost handing the crown to DICE with the way they have f'd this game up through minor decisions that could be avoided.

without the live chat i will not be playing this online. i think it's online play is rubbish anyway compared to BF, but unfortunately i am in the minority. the party chat feature is awesome and IMO necessary given all the douchebags out there who take military games too seriously. i have no desire to talk to strangers.

bring on bad company 2. wish i never pre-ordered this one, maybe i'll get lucky and it'll get banned in oz and i can get my money back. then i can use that money to get that little night vision keyring i saw online last week instead of the novelty one i pre-ordered. yes i have more money than sense (and i aint got much money)

19.1 - That is pretty much standard...
for first person shooters on console. Yes this is talking about he PC version but they are going to a use a Console P2P architecture when using IWnet for PC online. That way nobody feels left out. Now Console users and PC user will have no fun with their meager 9 v 9 online matches. Not only that be prepared PC fans for the disappointment of a 8 player cap in your FFA matches, a far cry from the 32 player fragfest presented with dedicated server in MW1, W@W and just about any modern PC FPS out there. LoL, IW: "We care about the players experience" if that means sucking all the fun of what could've been a fun game, you sure are delivering.
