Iwata on Japanses sales: "Wii cannot be defined as healthy"
45
Nintendo's Satoru Iwata has said that in Japan, the Wii situation "cannot be defined as healthy" because it hits the "below 50k unit sales" mark each week, despite the price cut and the 100k sales spike over the summer.

1 - Wii definitely is in trouble.
But they've made huge profit compared to MS and Sony. So, why not invest all those profit into making/developing games for the core gamers or even a next iteration of Wii in HD.

1.4 - Yes, but Sony's machine will be around for much longer, generating revenue for years to come.
Primarily due to the longevity of it's tech. So it's difficult to see who's business model is "better".
All signs point to the Nintendo Hp-upgrading the Wii or releasing a new system altogether next fiscal year. I think Patcher was actually right for once.
Edit: I do appreciate their candor on the matter though. It would be nice to see executives from other camps, MS for example, show some humility when dealing with the media (as opposed to: "We'll be beating so and so soon enough, just watch!" kinda prattle).

This would have made sense if wario actually had a "Wario kart" game =P.
Other than that you would still enjoy the mario games Madden, =D.

Nintendo never expected the initial response to the Wii and really seem to still not get it (when you look at their, Nintendo's titles it's a different picture). It is apparent, only 1st party titles "Mario" or "Wii" titles games will sell. And sell well. But the novelty has worn off. Now we find Wii gamers wanting Uncharted 2 experiences or ODST and can only play Mario Kart or SM Galaxy. Titles that TRY to bring PS3/360-like experiences get utterly ignored : Mad World, Zak and Wiki and Dead Space Extraction (to name a few). They've made their choice and while it took 3yrs, it seems as though they can't sustain the sells they used to. Fad comes to mind.

Action bas, You are a great example of whats wrong with this site... Only mario sales on Wii? Guitar hero sales better on Wii, as does Tiger Woods, Rock band, Shaun White snow boarding, etc. You really don't have a clue at all about Wii software sales do you?
Secondly Madworld, Dead Space, and Zack and Wiki are not PS3/360 experiences, just claiming they are shows how little you know. please show me the 5 hour black and white brawlers on Ps3 or 360? And for Dead speace please show me all the on rails shooters on Ps3 and 360... Zack and wiki is just too easy. you must not have ever played the game at all because there is nothing on Ps3 or 360 like it. hell there isnt anything on PS3 or 360 like ANY of those games you mention. maybe you should actually play them first?
BTW you must not be very bright at all. Wii sales are still above 360 and Ps3 sales every month. In japan they are only 5k behind PS3... So in your rush to say those are poor sales you just said PS3 was a fad and the fad was over... After all PS3 isnt really pulling ahead of Wii by that much and 360 is figting with the Ps2 for 3k a week in sales.
Before you even bother posting again. So get some kind of clue what you are talking about. the only people who are going to listten to you with that load of made up BS are just as clueless as you are...
Wii gamers are not Sony gamers and you cannot change their opinion by simply making stuff up

The problem is, you named 4 games. 4! GH (which sells across ALL platforms, same for RB and no one gave a sh1t about Shaun White. It's funny you even mention it.) Seeing as I have a Wii, have played more games in a month than you do all year, I'll say what I like. Wii hardware outselling in the States means d1ck when nothing but Nintendo software sells. That black and white brawler was great, shame only 66K of the 48 million Wii owners bought it. DSE? Great, great game with a story worth checking out if you're a Dead Space fan....and yet 9k sold. Spare me your misguided, VGChartz sales analysis. Instead, STFU and get some more bubbles. Mkay?

there is a dead space:extraction experience on ps3/360
its called dead space and its way better than the light gun spin off.
and the zack and wiki game experience is on ps3/360 also... its called ratchet and clank and banjo & kazooie. wii has some good games but dont say the wii games offer experiences that the other consoles have unless its wii sports or wii fit.

we need WII HD iwata.
give us something based on a 4000series based ati gpu or a gt200 based nvidia gpu.
then we'd truely have a hd console.
that could trigger another graphics leap, with PC and WII HD being able to handle those games.

On a serious note- Ninty made a killing off something that shouldnt have even been as big of a deal as its become. The damn thing is basically a Gamecube 1.5 with motion detection so it cost very little to produce these things. Even if the train wheels are screeching, they should be laughing all the way to the bank.
If they are smart they will make a true next gen console. Lord knows they have enough cash to create a real beast.

No. A Wii HD would be a drastically different console, both from a tech stand point and a from a consumer standpoint. Nintendo would be unlikely to sell it for a profit and considering that they bet the farm on casuals who don't give a rat's ass about graphics, who would Wii HD benefit? Not developers who would still have to create different games just for the Wii. Hardcore Nintendo fans? Okay, but that just puts them back in the Gamecube situation.
Nintendo made their play and it worked in the short term. I don't think they will be able to pull this out as easily as just releasing a Wii HD.

Well jmar,
Keep in mind that Nintendo is not willing to sacrifice all their libraries from the past and im not talking about Virtual console, im talking about GCN/Wii games.
Chances are that they will either emulate it or, go Sony at PS3 launch and add GCN like hardware to it.

Actually they only lost their way to those who pretend Nintendo is so different from other generations.
They still provided most of their titles, and more to come.
But their effort for trying to make gaming more popular has been great though, this also opened doors for Sony and MS this gen.

Nintendo *did* lost their way. They used to have a lot of hardcore games back in N64 days. Now it's just about soccer moms and their children. I actually want a Wii for the new Super Mario game but I'm not even sure if I should pick up one because it may collect dust.

Wii-sports/resorts
Wii-Fit/plus
Wii-music
5 Games that are in comparison to their traditional games in the minority, is, less hardcore games than the n64 days, how?
Seriously people like you are overreacting. If you dont like their games this gen, fine, but your statement is just false.

If you are calling your opinion of Nintendo having lost their have a "reason", then you clearly don't read posts here 100%. I never said Nintendo didn't lose their way. and nor did I say/post they did. It's just something you thought I ment by my post.

Funny how people think a profit (even though 30% lower than last year) is a bad thing. Iwata is talking to investors about MORE profit, meaning raising expectations. If Nintendo ever lost money in a quarter, now that is a story.

What are you talking about? Less profit is NOT a good thing because it means you are trending downwards... meaning, keep up this pace, and you'll be losing money soon enough. You want to avoid downward trends like the plague.
This begs another question: are there seriously Wii fanboys out there?

15 - Bottom line, PS3 dropped price which took away some Wii sales
Wii lacks great core 3rd party titles, those games are all on PS3/360.
So the answer is let's see how NSMBW performs, and then that should be an indicator of the next move for BiG N. WiiHD is still about 2 years away and neither 360 or PS3 will sell about 55 million consoles before then.
If I was them, ride out the wave until 2011, then this console era will end. Bring out Wii2 and launch it with Zelda and Smash Bros. That forces MS to do something, while Sony can still sit back and make profits off of PS3.

I've considered the possibility of the sales surge to eventually decline, but never at this rate, or even this quickly. If this trend continues on a global scale, the other competitors will close the lead.
This type of scenario the Wii is experiencing really is a first for the industry and demonstrates the negative side effect of "market saturation".

They still have better sales than PS3 and 360 globally.... Either you just do not have a clue what you are talking about or you didnt bother to read that those are Japan only figures and you think a console that sells more than Sony and Ms is some how now in last place...
The type of scenario the Wii is experiencing is the same PS2 experienced and every other console to hit the market has experienced.
It's just sad how many idiots and fanboys want to turn Nintendo selling more than MS and Sony into a bad thing.

The problem with Patcher is he NEVER quantified his statements.
He should have said "if Japan becomes a bigger problem Nintendo will introduce a new Wii", because that is exactly the impression i am getting from Iwata with these statements.
We know Iwata is playing for the home team, its the reason why there is a 2D Mario for Christmas this year, so i do believe that however it falls in Japan is how it will turn out for the rest of us.
I think Wii HD is more than probable now. I think Nintendo will release a DSI type upgrade next year, if nothing else helps, and we will see it in HD.

2 - Nintendo will have to change strategy when the casual market dies off
hey you ever noticed anything posted with Wii in the title gets minimul hits? well personaly my wii is collecting dust now till the new metroid game i suspect, im a gamer so the wii shovellware crap has little to offer me as of now, i was drawn in with some of the early titles and saw wii sports as a way to practice using the wiimote had no idea it was supose to be a real game, hopefully WHEN the casual market does die of and i pray soon we'll finaly get some proper titles from the big N if they remember how to make them that is.
its not gunna happen most casual gamers will stay casual because there getting wat they want from playing what they have now, anyway they consider themselves propper gamers by playing things like wii sports wii fit and warioware wich is barly a game.
by "die of" i meen get bored of the same old games theyve been playing and just move on, many of these people are on the fad band wagon its just a matter of time till they get bored and move on to wattevers next and good riddence to them when they do, theyre damaging to the industry you can see that can't you? 360 and PS3 are planning for the casual market now and let me tell you its going to be dad for us hardcore consumers.
