GameSpot: Dragon Age: Origins 360 Review

GameSpot writes: "The differences between versions aren't limited to the interface. Dragon Age doesn't look amazing on the PC, but it's an attractive game nonetheless. Zooming from an isometric view to a third-person perspective is slick, and while environments don't hold up quite as well when viewed up close, they're consistently lovely when viewed from above. On the flip side, the Xbox 360 version looks positively disappointing. Textures are highly compressed and colors are washed out, though the upside is that this version maintains a smoother frame rate than on the PlayStation 3, where things might get jittery when swiveling the camera around.

The PlayStation 3 version features higher-quality textures than those on the Xbox 360, better color saturation, smoother facial animations, and shorter load times. Minor visual hiccups, like corpses that disappear and reappear, are a bit more common on the PS3, however. The PC version is the superior experience, but if you're choosing between the two console releases, the PlayStation 3 has the upper hand. Some minor glitches are shared between the console versions, however, such as rare occasions when the soundtrack or voice-overs disappear. We also ran into a few quest malfunctions that could be replicated on all three platforms, though they were relatively minor and did not interfere with the progress of the main quest. "

1 - Ok.
I know they said the PS3 version has the upper hand but its just that the 'smoother frame rate' comment has me worried. Looks is one thing and functionality is another, I would rather have a smoother running game than a better looking one accompanied by frame rate dips. I wouldn't care if it looked like Star Wars KOTOR the XBox version , just as long as everything ran smoothly when the action got hectic.

I am torn, Better looking VS. Better running... or is it really that big of a difference at all? Ugh...decisions decisions...

Since I don't have a high powered PC, PS3 version for me. I'm sure the 360 version is just fine but since I don't have a 360 anymore, I have no choice. Thanks for making the PS3 version Bioware. Unlike Platinum and Valve, who'd rather just pass the buck to publishers for port jobs.

4 - Too bad its not my type of game
The gameplay looks boring and repetitive IMO. To be honest, I hardly see anyone that excited over this game on this site. I watched the PS3 gameplay video on GT and graphics weren't that good, so I can't imagine how bad it looks on 360 if they deducted .5 points away. Usually they don't bother to deduct points for something like this unless it takes away from the game.

7 - "upside is that this version maintains a smoother frame rate than on the PlayStation 3"
Well for me frame rate is more important, I think the Xbox 360 is a better option because it has smoother frame rate. Also I will be installing this game to my HDD so it can load faster.

I love how a lot of ps3 gamers have a spazzy melt down over a measly -.5 difference in scores, yet when it is a +.5 difference its non stop gloating and bashing. LOL it's .5 of some dudes opinion.
BOTH versions have their issues but I guess when sheep are leading the sheep...

I think you'll find it's a bit of tit-for-tat. There's countless beatup articles regarding the Bayonetta difference, for example, in one set of scores - 2 points difference on a 40 point scoring system; ie 5%, same as this game's score differences.

If you scroll through those threads you'll see endless gloating from Xbox fanboys to the effect of "it's good that i don't have to worry about inferior ports", "this far in and the PS3 is still getting crappy ports" etc. etc.

Truthfully a few % points difference between console versions matters little, but you can't expect one group of fanboys not to respond when they get the ammo to another group of fanboys - and it's ironically fanboyish itself not to see that both sides are doing it are just as bad in terms of taunting and retaliation.

9 - i don't have a gaming PC, so any Xbox 360/PC only titles
i pick up on my 360.

when it's a title released on PC/Xbox 360/PS3, i always go with the PS3 version, because i prefer the PS3 controller over the 360 controller.

i used to try and upgrade my PC to play the latest games, but with the economy the way it is, my finances the way they are, and two perfectly capable consoles able to play the games on my HDTV with no significant extra stress, i game 100% on consoles these days.

only when i'm running emulators on my PC (like NES or DS games), will i game on the PC.

the reason why people make a stink about the Xbox 360/PC only thing, is because PS3 exclusives are available on NO OTHER PLATFORM, while, there is, at the least, another platform for Xbox 360/PC gamers to play most Xbox 360 "exclusives." if you REALLY wanted, you could play Mass Effect, Gears, etc on the PC. sure, you may have to buy/upgrade your PC, but you could play those games. no amount of PC upgrading will make Uncharted 2, Ratchet, MGS4, Killzone 2, LBP, etc run on your PC. THAT'S why it's called exclusive. there's no choice but to have a PS3 to play those games.

I think fallout3 and Oblivion already surpassed this game. Move along the circa 2002 graphics even on high end pc are not interesting.

Claiming graphical superiority in a game that has launch title-esque graphics is asinine. Anyone in their right mind who have looked at this game would not give a damn about the graphics, unless of course you buy it for PC. Then, you don't have to worry about anything.

but according to you kiddies, smoother textures > higher, more stable framerates? Seriously? It's almost sickening how graphics are the most important feature for the majority of "gamers" that have started this gen.

I was waiting to either get this for 360 or Demon's Souls for PS3. Looks like I'll be getting the latter.

I would at least like clarification as to whether or not they had the game installed to the xbox hard drive. I'm interested to see if the game being "optimized for installation" provides much of an improvement.

19 - It should have better graphics on the PS3
The fact that it doesn't...It makes me think Bioware is just a little lazy. But I can't stay mad at them. I <3 ME

20 - I almost pick up the PS3 version of Dragon Age..
But..the Mass Effect 2 Armor thing drove me to buy the X360 version just to be safe. The PS3 version doesn't have the MAss Effect 2 sticker on the box.

I still haven't open it yet. The Gamestop dude told me the PC and X360 were the only version that has the code to Mass Effect 2 armor. Is that so?

21 - This is no Mass effect
This game plays move like KOTOR. The story is very well done. You will fell a connection with the people you speak to. It is not completely open world like Bethesda games. I uses quick travel between cities. You can not choose to walk or ride. The fighting does not let you swing freely. it is all timed based on your weapon. Lots of customization. Mass Effect is a more modern RPG. This game looks good. Mass Effect looks ten times better. Still, this game does a lot of things very well. I am pleased with the 360 version.

I guess, since this is more of a slow-moving game, framerate may not matter as much as a FPS for example. I'd probably get the PS3 version of the game. Need to see more comparisons though to be sure.
