Everyone has to admit that we've been playing basically the same Mario experience for decades with just a new trick here and there. And that's great. I know what I want and expect from a Mario title.

Mario's last huge "improvement" was going 3D (though I'll say that the real improvement is going back to 2D for the latest DS and Wii games. And old-school VC Mario game FTW!)

But every new Mario game that comes out is insta-classic status with the same old game play.

The same can be said for Link and Halo.

Heck, ODST's great new feature was ripped off from Gears and it still got 9's.

Sony has to put out a near-perfect game to get an 8.9. and has to perform miracles to break into 9 status.

It's pretty amazing to witness this phenomenon.

Conspiracy Theory time...

I actually heard that this happens because, Sony got a little too big for their britches winning the last two console wars. Without any competition, Sony grew so big that they could treat people any way that they wanted.

So there was a concerted effort by media, devs, and publishers alike to even out the playing field. This way Sony wouldn't be the sole dictator calling all of the shots.

This is a rumor, but did anyone hear anything else like this?

Whats funny to me is that I've seen lots of the "we are ODST" commercials and not one frame of gameplay. Same thing happened with Halo Wars and MS got a pass. Sony shows gameplay, gameplay, gameplay in it's commercials, especially this new ad campaign. It's interesting how Sony's games look so good that they are compared to movies and CGI when it's the harder system to program for and has been on the market for a year less than the 360.

How did that happen... hmmmm? lol

that was almost true except, Super Mario Sunshine didn't get 9's... The press average is 8.5 so there goes that, but its not only the fact that sony has to work at it but its also because alot of these sites are biased against Sony for whatever reason. Not very many non biased sites these days.

The first thing that should make your ears stands up is how developers on the 360 are claiming the X-Engine "can" "match" PS3 exclusives. How the hell is a console that says it's better than the PS3 and has been out longer, going into year 5, is only now talking about "matching" (not surpassing) what a console younger than it has been doing in essentially year 2.

We saw KZ2 in gameplay in yr 2 of the PS3 and it could have come out in Nov if not for tight scheduling with Resistance2 and MS developers are telling you 'wait, it is "possible" to do KZ2, UC2 type graphics in yr5 of the 360..but only with this Engine"

That's complete BS. Games on the 360 will look better in 2010 because.. IT"S 2010! They're supposed to look better. Halo Reach will look better cause... it's out in 2010! Halo Reach will look no better than Bioshock, MW or Splinter Cell (all multiplat games) but because it'll look miles better than any Halo game to date, it will be touted by it's fans as even better than KZ7.

But all others will see it for what it is, a halo game that finally looks like current gen material graphically but nothing we've not seen from many other multiplatform games. They'll throw out some tech mumbo jumbo word about techniques they used with the game like they do with - "FORGE!" (gimped map editor) or "FIREFIGHT!" (co-op mode done by other games already) or "TIRE DEFLEXING" or "DEFINITIVE" just some random buzz word and Halo fans will lose their minds.

They'll all go out, even pay $100 for online to make sure they get the "full online experience" of Halo Reach & it'll get it's usual helpings of 11/10s from all NA media outlets but at the end of the day, gamers outside the Halo aura will see the 360 games in 2010 & beyond for what they are - better looking games on the 360 from previous years.

If MS's 360 could do Uncharted, Infamous, KZ2, MGS4 type graphics they would have long ago and not touting that they're going to likely do what the PS3 is doing... soon. Sounds exactly like a ploy to just keep it's base engaged in the product.

Why bother with it. Their next generation machine is almost due! Guess the recession is burning their plans for jumping ship again.

By the time this launches to make games comparable to PS3 2009, PS3 2010 games will already be destroying the 2009 games... and they will be in 3D.

But I actually hope this is true, so 360 fans can finally get something worth their money. MS practically threw away a whole year already(2009)!

And I mean VERY GOOD WORK. They have put out good games and a good console. But Microsoft has a better marketing team. Much like the earlier post about the hard worker vs the hot girl. I do have to say though, I am enjoying the new PS3 commercials. Maybe the hard worker has been going to the gym and got a hair cut.

Sounds like its a new toolset/devkit to enable more efficient use of memory an thread managment, alternitivly it could be a redone xbox os with a much smaller footprint

if its the first there will be some growth from using it but not huge leaps and bounds, ie dont expect ps2-360 style graphics jumps

if the latter then it will simpley give more memory for devs to use

MS don't need many first party studios...Sony have about 20 o them and they all get no profit for Sony now...Insomniac is looking to lost exclusivity...and after X-engine will be showen many other devs will speck open about that too. X-engine and xbox brand, next xbox are the future for earning money.

When X-engine will be show it is all over for PS3. Sony will be forced to bring Ps4 as quickly as they can...but xbox 720 ans wii2 again will be sooner...

Things not so good for Sony this and next gen. just remember that and see what is going to happen in the next 6 mount.

MS is loosing now..but it's only one battle in the whole war.
Don't worry Xbox fans. Microsoft know how to get our money. And we will bring it them when will see what they are cooking for us now fo allready many many years with AMD/ATI and their partners.

It's been over-used this generation, but it is the best game I've ever played. There hasn't been a game on the Xbox platform I can say that about.

imad is correct about one thing. MS knows how to get your money. It doesn't involve quality or game value, it's advertising. They have proved that with Natal, their version of the PS2 Eyetoy. The difference being the Eyetoy has actually demonstrated it's gameplay and not resorted to smoke and mirrors.

From the beginning MS stated they would win the console war by being first to market. That was their mantra. Sony stated the PS3 would win by offering superior technology and gaming. As a gamer it isn't difficult to pick the platform that is about getting the most game for your time.

if anything i am looking forward to it .. coz as i c it its whats is gonna put hope of taking the graphic crown or show similiar fidelity from MS as Sony has proven ... but i believe it is gonna happen well sony has had the ability to pump visually gd games .. to show their marketing edge .. while MS well was more focused on market share and gaining developers to their platform since that is what they lacked in the xbox1 so with that now a factor which they have fixed .. its time for them to challendge sony visually sony on the other hand was being hit hard with either exclusives leaving their stable or 3rd [party games looking worse .. and also havin the most expensive system in the market and to show their worth they needed visually gd games and that is what path they had to take to compete with MS... and its paying off with great titles we have seen this year to be honest.. KZ2, U2, etc.. freaking awesome..
now 2010 is on the way.. the MS is looking to take the fight to sony on the visual front ... and this would be a year of true HD brilliance with sony's studios getting to master their console engine and x- engine for the 360 getting to gear up with titles like halo reach .. things will get very intresting .. ppl... very intresting..

love my ps3 n 360.. cant wait.. gamer for life..

Demon5500 has been talking up the alleged specs of the 360 and preaching the X-Engine like it's the second coming of Raptor Jesus.

"Wait until E3 and you'll see what Microsoft has in store. Game over, Sony." Nothing happened.
"Wait until TGS, you'll see Halo: Reach and the X-Engine...blah blah DirectX 11 blah blah built in tesselation...game over, Sony." Nothing happened.

They keep telling us to wait and see, which is ironic, because the fanboys have called the PS3 the WaitStation or DelayStation in the past, and all they've done for 2009 is wait for quality exclusives (subjective, I know) and still waiting for the graphics that compete with PS3. I am looking forward to the X-Engine and hope it breathes new life into the 360, and one of the rumored features of the X-E is forward compatable upscaling to take advantage of the next Xbox, meaning better AA, framerate and minor cosmetic upgrades. Until then, we'll hear the false prophets preaching the possibility, but none of us know until they reveal it.

they rushed the 360 out b4 the ps3 and where did that get them,,,rrod, dvd9, no standard hdd, no built in wi-fi, no hdmi, and now their weaker spec is showing their games up compared to what ps3 is doing.

the only thing ms got right this gen was live, but then you have to pay for it anyway, and to keep up with what ps3 will be doing you'll have to spend out again for a "720", and when ps4 comes out it will look weak in comparison. ps4 with have scalled up specs from ps3, based on some form of cell or multi-cell so the learning curve will not be so great for devs to get used to it, even 3rd party devs will be up to scratch by then, and i doubt it will be so expensive in comparison to ps3 launcg price either as the cost of blu-ray eing new tech will not be there.

No, true. The x engine will revolutionize the way you do games. After that, sales people will be able to make games. No programmers needed (that's something I keep hearing at every Visual Studio seminar since years now).

No, it will do deferred rendering, tessellation, virtualize memory, stream from (non existent) HDDs. And all that, while double the polycount and max out the three cores. Now they can do one scalar, SP and VMX instruction at the same time - on all three cores (it's magic!). What's more, the CPU isn't even needed in most cases, because they figured out to offload most of the crunching tasks into the GPUs "intelligent memory", the EDRAM. And all that was already there from the beginning. MS was holding back, that's why it took them almost 5 years to come up with it - even though they control DirectX. Sensational. You have to play the cards at the right moment guys. Don't you get it ?
