Nintendo Wii Sales Sink, Gamers Want Better Games

Digital Trends writes: The video game console wars are booming right now thanks to price cuts across the board on the three major game consoles. The introduction of the much cheaper PS3 slim was a catalyst for the price cuts in the industry.

With the PS3 Slim selling for $299, Microsoft quickly dropped the price of its Xbox 360 Elite to the same $299 price point. To make its console more attractive Nintendo also announced a price cut. The price cut brought the Wii to a price of $199. At that price, the console still fell behind the new PS3 as gamers finally started to buy the console in significant numbers.

A lot of people saw E3, and it was bad, but not as bad as last year.

I wouldn't rate any game good or great by any score, cause that says nothing except blind by. Nintendo has some good games but they could be better.

Looks to me like every console has their big hits. Just because SMG has a 97, that doesn't automatically make everything else on the Wii less crappier than they are. Granted, we should be playing good games and yes there are good games on the Wii. But to deny how much crap the Wii puts out is very hard to do.

Yes, they could be better, but so could a lot of other titles this gen but are stil quality titles. No game is perfect.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I'm not going beyond saying "the wii has quality titles". Every Console does. I know good and well there are a lot of crap titles out for the Wii, thanks to lazy third party devs, but every console has that.

The article is saying "gamers want better games". My point is that the Wii has quality games. What more could these "gamers" want?

You are right, I'm glad they showed stuff like that, I just wished they showed a huge explosion of 3rd party games while on stage, just to openly show people they still have sharpness.

I don't care what system it is, I just wanted them to flex past things like that monitor device, and Cammy boring me to death. I don't care if it was NSMB to GOW3 it all looked cool to me, just some eyes don't have a true passion 4 games.

I see your point, but the term "gamer" has become extremely subjective. There are too many different types of "gamers" that range from PC only to PS3 only to 360 only to 360/PS3 only to 360/PC only to PS3/PC only to PS3/Wii only to Wii only to PSP only etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Generalization statements usually never make any sense. Sort of like "PS3 owners are fanboys" or "360 owners are all idiots"

So to pin point the "gamers" that say "OMG Wii Sucks, it has no games" is only that specific group of people.

Is not a matter of "Console Gamer" classification, is more about a "gaming community" leaving aside how much a person play games or how many Consoles has

The wii is a family product, have fun with all the family and stuff, then the
N fanbase take care of the exclusives (Mario/Zelda/Metroid) and the non "all the family fun playing" games

The Gaming Community (casuals + gamers) support the Gaming Industry, not the families

With this, I try to say that everyone in the beginning was so shocked about the wii sales and It was because the wii appeal to everyone, gamers, casuals and not gamers at all and now everyone is shocked again because the sales are falling, common sense tell us that the real supporters are gamers and casuals

The meaning of "casual" is a misinterpretation, casuals know about games in a minor way, the people that don't know about games and for one time buy a console only to play a couple of games, definitely are not casuals

Funny, last gen I supported 2 Consoles, PS2 and GC and was fighting against people saying the GC is for kids, knowing that I bought it only to play 5 games and now I'm saying the wii is more like a toy with a little of consideration about it's fanbase and everyone is pointing a handful of games (more than the GC, I know) like me before

By saying 2009's Wii line up sucks, you are saying Muramasa: the demon blade, Little King's story, DragonBall ROKP, Dead Space: extraction, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Tatsunoko VS Capcom, Spectrobes: origins, Metroid Prime: trilogy, Final Fantasy CC: the cystal bearers, Resident Evil: DC, Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces, ETC....... Sucks. (Even though some of the games I listed are not even out yet.) Which in the end only brings us down to opinion.
Do me a favor, play some of the Wii games I listed, before saying ANY of them suck/sucks/sucked.

Mario Galaxy only has 73 reviews. Uncharted has more perfect scores, but regardless, try and add another 20 reviews for Mario and see if Mario can hold it. Uncharted 2 was well in the 97 average.

"Highest Rated", lol so if Gran Turismo became the highest rated game (hypothetically speaking), you Wii fanboys would buy a PS3? Obviously not, because you have a Wii to play Mario, just like many gamers play games for many reasons other than scores (or sales; or profit, in the case of wii fanboys).

But I couldn't care less what anyone thinks about Sony or MS=-not in a Wii thread. Thing is the Wii line up this year has been weak as any I can remember-last year may have had fewer "core"(hate the term) games but those at least hit their marks as great games(NMH, Z&W, Okami,SSBB)nut this year has been full of let downs after a promising list of hopefuls-Madworld, Conduit, Overkill, Deadly Creatures and LKS were all, to me, just not THAT good and failed to be as good as you'd hope. Even well done games like Muramasa and Extraction weren't as good all round as the best games of previous years on the Wii(Extraction, and add in DC when it com,es, fall into a niche catergory for most and a rental at best for most too because the genre's a cheap cop out for devs and we all know it-EVERY Wii owner would prefer a proper Resi r DS ame wouldn' t they?)-and being honest I couldn't give either a higher mark than a 7.5 to 8 out of ten and there are lenty of PS360 games this year that exceeded that score both for me and the critics.

I still like my Wii and this time last year would have prolly argued alongside you but so far this year there's not been one Wii game bar a collection of old Prime titles that I'd(had they all been new) give a 9 or above to-Punchout!! was a secent effort but, again, not what it could have been.

Of the new games we haven't played yet I can't say how good they'll be and, yes, I'm, looking forward to a few myself(CCCB mainly, mind). However, what I've read and hear of the New Mario Bros isn't great and after so many disappointments ths year I'm starting to lose patience. I'm sure NMH2 will be cool next year and possibly Red Steel and Other M(and S&P2 though, really, where the hell is that!)but those aside, and assuming they're all GREAT it's still weaker than what I expect from PS360.

Nintendo needs t start squeezing the market that PS360/PC has sewn up, imo, by educating their newer gamers and pleasing their older ones so they stay with them. As it stands, thoyugh, I ony see MS and Sony gunning for Wii's market and if Ninty son't fight back they'll end up, long term, having widened the market just for others to REALLY cssh in-however well they've done up to now in sales terms. Seriously, I'd love a run of geat Wii games but I haven't been experiencing that at all this year whereas I've been much happier with the output from Sony and from the multiplats on PS360/PC.

Maybe I've just bought one too many flop after waiting for it on the Wii(this year's been FULL of disappointment-not to mention Ninty shafting us in the west over a great looking game with great Japanese reviews like Fatal Frame 4)this year and have got a little wound up but, honestly, I just don't see enough quality on the Wii over the last 24 months to support a gaming community in a similar way to what the other consoles have probided for us.

Nint also have their usual problem with wanting tio make the best games on their platform and as a result not supporting third party devs at all-there should be demos and far more trailers on Wii Connect somewhere-then Vanillaware and their ilk wouldn't be turning their backs on the Wii after having their game criminally ignored, no?

Trust me, I only want the same from Nintendo as I do from Sony and MS and that's some great games to play on their console and right now they just aren't giving them to me or helping anyone else do so on the Wii-why can they do it better(though not perfectly even then) on DS but not on the home console? I just don't agree that the quality's ben there in any great numbers though-not for a long while. Just look at Capcoms non PS2/GC port output for an illustration of what even great devs think is OK to force on us Wii owners for proof of what I mean. CTYD?

Mastiff -- I agree there should be more demos and stuff on the Wii's online channels, and I'd sure love to see them. But there's only so much the hardware manufacturer can do. I don't know why people think the console maker is responsible for all marketing of every game that is released on said console. It doesn't work that way; publishers aren't there just to put their names on the box, after all. And so far, third parties haven't done a whole lot to push their games on Wii. Look at Dead Space. Not only was it gimped into a rail shooter that many "core" gamers overlooked, but it wasn't marketed at all to more casual players who might've chosen to pick it up at launch. That's not on Nintendo.

Sega took the initiative to put out some actual advertising for MadWorld and Conduit, and it showed. Neither of those games launched huge, but they've both sold well enough to turn a profit.

Moreover, third parties looking for instant gratification should look elsewhere than Nintendo, anyway. Nintendo's own franchises usually don't launch like Halo or GTA. Even Mario Galaxy got most of its sales on long legs:

Nintendo has a lot of faults. Chief among them, they've fallen so far behind in online gaming that they're putting themselves at a serious disadvantage long-term. That's a valid point of contention and something that is COMPLETELY their fault.
But I just don't see how it's their fault for the failures of games they don't make and aren't responsible to market.

Of course its sales are going down. It's been out for awhile now, caught lightning in a bottle to generate ridiculous numbers earlier (which will never be replicated), hasn't been priced prohibitively high, and the whole industry hasn't had the best year.

Yes, the PS3 picked up steam. That's to be expected; lots of people waited to buy it because of its price -- me included. I'm certainly considering getting one now.
But we'd have to see a huge trend reversal for Nintendo to get bumped from top of the heap this gen.
