Genre By System

This console generation has seen a divergence in style for each platform's exclusive titles. All three home systems have carved out a segment of the market and audience of their own by virtue of this. Go Gaming Giant takes a look at each of the big three consoles and the route they went.

PS3 shows the most diversity. It has AAA exclusive games from the widest variety of genres.

PS3 is not stuck in one genre, has a nice variety of games, is different when we talk about xbox games, just look at banjo kazooie/viva piñata and if we talk about wii, it's all about first party

This article is a good read. The analogy is roughly good.

It's unthinkable to have experiences like The Last Guardian, Heavy Rain or fine niche games like Valkyrie Chronicles in the xbox, the audience is just not there. Hell even good JRPGS fight to sell. However, alongside with fine artistic movies you can find war movies like KZ2, a bluckbuster action movie like UC franchise and some family shows like LBP and R&C. The PS3 just does everything.

My 2 cents - I think the PS3 is terrible for first person shooters. Conversly the 360 is terrible for fighting games. It comes down to the controller design for me.

I dunno about that I played Soul Calibur and SFIV on the 360 and enjoyed both

the 360 is just a poor mans pc if you ask me. If you want shooters just get them on pc not only do they look the best but they also have the best controls. As a gamer, you don't really need a 360 for anything.

p.s. 360 is still a great console for those that don't game on pc.

Weird... I can't stand the 360 controller but I like the PS3 controller. It feels much better for FPS games. And games in general. But keyboard and mouse still owns all.

respect.

ok maybe a few more..

this guy is right about the wii being family friendly. my brother and i play lego indiana jones all the time just for laughs. we play halo when we want to scream in anger at crappy ping or yell in awe at something extraordinary that happened in matchmaking.
i personally do not own a ps3 but from the looks of it, games like MGS4 and jrpg's require a different kind of skill and patience that the games on 360 dont need. plus i think there are more quality games on the ps3.

too bad there will be no Okami sequal :( THAT is art in gaming. Clover Studios will be missed

Ps3 has games like LBP, Killzone 2, MGS4, and soon GOW3 etc.
360 has games like Gears of war, Halo, Fable, Viva Pinata etc.

I still think ps3 has a bit more variety

7 - Xbox360 just follows PS3.
Sony makes the games and microsoft copies them.
i cant remember when microsoft didnt mention ps3 games and genres.
Every E3 is playstation playstation playstation from microsoft.

PS3 has invented genres.
There is more variety of quality made games on ps3.
xbox 360 is a good system for new developers who need to beta test thier ideas and get paid for it.

its a halobox.
a easily maniputable community.
but ummm, dont tell em i said that. i still need them to help fund ps3 exclusives.

You realize that microsoft hardly makes games right? I mean the developers do that stuff, so how is microsoft stealing the ideas? Think about what you say or else you come off as a fanboy.
too late i suppose.

good read, a bit of a stretch with sony being art house tho, that would imply that the budgets were outlandishly low and they weren't released on a large scale. But spot on with Nintendo and Microsoft.

That is probably about right in terms of a general rule for each console.

Each have their pros and cons.

Im a ps3 guy for the more "Art house" reason, but I can see the appeal for many with the XBOX and Wii.

We all have our own style, dislikes and likes.

9 - it was a decent article but....
you compared the consoles most successful games and just neglected games like mass effect, little big planet etc
i think the PS3 just caters to every audience or at least tries to in fact all 3 consoles try to branch to other audiences

I've beaten MGS4 at least 5 times. I don't see how it has no replayability, plus there's MGO.

Does anyone still play MGO? That was quite possibly the worst MP experience I've had in this generation.

The Xbox360 doesn't come out as especially distinct in terms of games from this article. If the Xbox360's strength is its blockbusters then the PS3 has arguably beaten it so far with the Uncharted series, a very classic cinema experience. However it's in the numbers of third party adventure games over the last few years that Xbox360 may have an advantage.

'Art house' might not necessarily mean just about deep relationships between people but also unusual concepts, artistically or in ideas. The design possibilities of Little Big Planet may make it art house in a way but the PS3 still doesn't have some outright unusual games like the PS2's Gregory Horror Show or the Wii's Mad World. If art house means huge cut scenes when you'd rather establish emotion yourself from the action of the game then I wouldn't especially want 'art house'.
