But PC doesn't have Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2 or MGS4 :(

As much as I love my PC, but it can't play the best games this gen... It won't be able to play TLG or GOW3 as well.. Add GT5, Heavy Rain, MAG, Agent...... The list goes on and on... But a PC is awesome for playing 360 exclusive games :)

Gaming on a PC is just far too expensive for the average gamer that wants to play the higher-end visual games like Crysis. When your talking $2,000+ investments that don't always keep you up-to-date enough to last as long as a console's typical span, it just isn't very realistic. I realise that some people can build PC's on their own for less, but not everyone can. Having to drop another $400+ just to upgrade your graphics card is more expensive than a whole console.

1.8 - I'm surprised they didn't mention emulators.
We all know that sooner or later nearly all console games end up on PC emulators. Heck there is one for the Wii already. Yea yea yea it is "illegal" to use emulators they way most people do, but what's a gamers to do when they get that retro twitch. ;P

Edit:
To 1.7
For about $300 you can build a decent gaming rig good enough to run MassEffect. To match consoles you only need about 2GHz+ cpu, 2Gbs ram, and a $100-$150 video card. About half the computers used to post on N4G likely meets those requirements... minus the vid card of coarse. ;)

1.9 - i agree about the saftey net thing
but not on why

for the ps3 at least, the motion controller is going to be a lot more accurate and steered towards hardcore/skill driven games
its going to be much more accurate then a joystick and its pretty much like a mouse

but when i think of pc as a safety net i think of it like, i can go back to it when im bored of the console games

pc games were ment to last much longer then console games dude to competition with mmorpgs and fps games with free mods

console gaming is where is at in terms of polish and cinematic quality
and it lives off brining new games to the market

pc is like playing baseball, it never gets old, but it wont give u that movie feeling... at least right now it doesnt hahaha, not saying that it didn't before like only a couple years ago

"But PC doesn't have Uncharted 2 or Killzone 2 or MGS4"

what EvilBlackCat said.
PC gamers see console games as dumbed down gaming for kids, why would they care about games like killzone when they have crysis.

the PC games scene has changed a lot in the last few years though, piracy has forced many good devs to move to consoles, Crytek is the perfect example. But if you love Valve and Blizzard like I do, and are into games like empire total war or anyother RTS for that matter its still well worth having a PC.

@flash74

in the long run pc gaming is actually cheaper then console gaming..
this is due to the prices on console games.. they are enough to turn the tide..

here is an example for you:

here is a comparison for you between the xbox 360 and the pc. 3 years of gaming on each platform, pc will get a 150gpu upgrade after 3 years of play, i will assume the xbox doesnt fail and lasts the 3 years.

20games will be bought on each system every year.. totalling 60 games purchased for 3 years. here it goes

Xbox
299usd cost of xbox (does sup 720p)
150usd cost of live
3540usd cost of 60 games bought over 3 years (59usd a game)

cost of xbox over 3 years usd3900

PC
500usd cost of pc (which does true hd 1080p @60fps)
150usd gpu upgrade after 3 years
2940usd cost of 60 games bought over 3 years (49usd a game)

cost of pc over 3 years usd3590

there we go after 3 years of gaming the pc is usd310 cheaper then the xbox 360.

its a myth pc being more expensive then consoles.. note this comparison was done with US game prices.. game price difference in rest of the world is about 25usd.. if i used those figures pc would be much much cheaper.

so the pc gamer played games at true 1080p with hi res textures for 3 years. then got an upgrade which will again ensure the pc user is back at 1080p. plus the pc user had mod support, free dlcs, mouse keyboard support.

360 user on the other hand played games at lower resolutions low to med res textures. and as the generation progresses instead of the standard being 720p it keeps falling note latest halo is 540p, Mw2 being 600p.. this will further fall as the gen progresses. while the pc user after the 3 year upgrade is still at 1080.

lets not dish the consoles completely they are only worth their exclusives. multiplatform games are cheaper and better on pc.

beside all this.. who doesnt have a pc at home these days? everyone needs one for work, everyone doesnt need a console. A 150usd gpu is enough to supercharge any 2yr old pc to out do any console multiple times.

FACT: pc is much cheaper then consoles.

1.12 - "Why you guys are always trying to make PS3 exclusive and games sound like the best sh_t ever?"
Well, to some people some console exclusives ARE the best sh!t ever...

Of course the PC does a lot of things better than consoles like shooters and sims...

But I still can't play as Old Snake in MGS4. or as Link in Twilight Princess. Or Cole in Infamous. Or Mario. Or Nathan Drake.

Even the GREATEST GRAPHICS EVER!!!! can't replace the soul of a game, or it's likeable characters.

But in fairness to PC gaming, once you find a good mmo with a strong community and join a guild of helpful, fun-loving players that aren't power leveling - l00t gear seeking - 16 hrs straight raiders... there simply is nothing like it.

And I ain't talking WoW either. I'm talking EQ back in the day. Awww yeah... :)

1.13 - 10 reasons???
I have a PC with a video card that cost more than any console right now. So yes, PCs are great, but expensive! On the other side, if I had to pick 10 reasons, they would not be those one!!!

1) Use of Mouse and Keyboard in PC: You can use those on a console. Unreal Tournament for PS3 does. Devs just don't want to go this way.

2) Screen Resolution: The screen resolution is truly high in PC so you think 1980X1080 is not high enough? Most PC gamers have their resolutions lower than this!

3) Upgrade the Hardware: Yep, $150 for a new hard drive every 6 months. $400 for a new video card every year. $100 for extra memory every 6 months. etc, etc, etc. That's if you always want to run the latest game. Then replace PC every 3 years because it can no longer play the latest game.

4) Cheaper Games: True. But if you want to trade them in, you get less value. Console games have much higher trade value since they are not protected by SN and other crap. Overall this even things out.

5) Free modes: Yep, you can get all kind of free things, plug-ins, mods, viruses, spywares, etc, but hey, you get free stuff!

6) Not tied to online service: True.

7) Unlimited Storage Space: You need unlimited storage because on a PC, everything grows exponentially. Look back at any PCs... 25 games installed, yet you have 1.5 teraby full! (Everything installed on the PC itself). And technically, you can also have unlimited storage on the console too. PS3 has easily upgradable internal drives, and you can add as many USB drives as you want.

8) Download for free: There are many older games legally available to download for PC gamers. But do most players want to play 10 or 15 years old games? I don't think so.

9) Always pay extra for playing online: NOT ON PS3 You will have to pay every time you play online for Xbox live. That is really expansive.

10) Unofficial fixes for older games: Again, "unofficial" quite often mean risking getting official viruses and spywares.

@ Real_Gambler: Oh, it IS possible to build an expensive PC, that's certainly true. There are workstation graphics cards that cost more than 10 grand. But it's also possible to build a cheap gaming rig that will still blow every console to pieces. The prices you list are completely exaggerated. Such a rig is not necessary, only if you always want to play every game on max details in ridiculous resolutions. 150$ for a harddrive every six months, seriously? Is this your first gaming rig you built?

1.15 - PC fanboys
Just sounds like more fanboy rhetoric and BS. I like how this one fool says but real PC gamers don't care about console exclusives. Well that's because you're not a REAL GAMER you limit yourself to the PC which in my opinion is stupid just like the console fanboys. If you're going too limit your gaming experience to one platform then you need to limit the crap coming out of your mouth. I own all gaming platforms. I have had every console since the first atari and built dozens of PCs. To the one comparing prices over 3 years for the 360 to a PC my PC cost more in the long run that's because I start from the bottom up new graphics gpu, larger power supply, more RAM, newer faster processor, and the other extras. Seriously I build a new computer almost every 2 years so get real if you think that PC gaming is not expensive because it is and we do it because we love it. There is good and bad in all forms of gaming. But of course the simple minded tunnel visioned fanboys will never know what true gaming is because they can't get their self ego inflated heads out of their own rear ends.

@realgambler

what you say is completely untrue.. i wonder if you even are a pcgamer.

i built a pc when the ps3 came out.

following were the specs:

2.4ghz intel dual core cpu
2gb ram
8800 gtx gpu

this setup cost me 800usd when the ps3 cost 600usd.

this older computer still plays all the games better then a ps3 ever can and it plays all the games at true 1080.

if anyone would have built this setup back then.. and bought all the games on the pc.. it would be cheaper by now compared to the ps3.

imo you exagerate too much.

@ducajun

sure you could upgrade all the time if you like.. but thats your preference.. the setup i made when the ps3 launched.. still outperforms the ps3 in just about any game. also you dont have to be gaming on the pc alone.

you could own a ps3 while having a pc, to play the ps3 exclusives.

however multiplats just are cheaper and better on pc.

1.18 - @Champ21
You only mention "upgrades" in your argument. I personally own a laptop. For me to realistically get into the PC scene, it would cost me an entry fee of at least $2000 (aside from getting one built cheap if you or someone you know can do so). That $2000 is more than my 360, PSP, DS, PS2, and laptop combined! If you were say just a fan of Sony, even at their opening prices, you could have gotten the original PS, the PS2, and the PS3 for cheaper than a PC and that covers 3 console generations and about 14 years combined. A PC will eventually have to have everything replaced a minimum twice over to keep up with that, and that's being very conservative. Secondly, unless I'm playing a handheld, I don't want the screen right in front of my face. I understand that you can hook them up to a flatscreen, but I really don't want a PC in my living room. Lastly the argument that you probably need a PC doesn't hold much water either. A gaming PC is far different than one used more casually or for work purposes. You can do most things aside from gaming on a very cheap model. Also, even though PC games are cheaper, they have almost no return value. At the end of the day, PC gaming on the high-end games is just flat out far to expensive.

You said you could "build" a "decent" gaming rig for $1000. Two key problems with that statement. First off, not everyone knows how to build PC's or have friends that do. They would either have to buy a good one or pay the labor to have a place build one to spec. Secondly, a "decent" gaming rig is not going to get the job done. To play some of the more visually taxing games, you need a very strong set-up to play at high res and to be good enough to handle the next few years worth of top games. Other than some extremely resourceful PC gamers/builders out there, $1000 is typically not going to cut it.

I prefer keyboard and mouse for FPS, hands down. But for 3PS, I definitely prefer a controller. A lot of 3rd person games are really awkward to control on PC. I tried playing Assassin's Creed on PC at a friend's house and it took me a LONG time to get the hang of it.

Although I guess you could argue the PC has the best of both worlds since you can hook controllers up to it. The 360 controller connects easily, and I'm sure there's ways to hook up a Dualshock with a little Google magic.

They did mention mods...

"5) Free modes: In PC gaming, you can use plug-ins or some unofficial upgrade. For example studio works in NFS (Need for Speed). That is not possible in console."

And kb/m is hands-down the best control scheme for FPS and RTS. If you want proof then go play Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 4/WaW, StarCraft (N64 port), Command & Conquer, or even Fallout 3 on a console and then play the PC counter-part. Kb/m just gives you more customization options and more importantly that "twitch" for extra precision.

The only type of games that I prefer to use controllers are third-person games (God of War, Legend of Zelda, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Gears of War, etc) and 2-D side-scrollers (Mario, Sonic, etc).

These articles will always pop up every now and then because fanboys are so retarded they keep claiming the opposite is true.

Pc gaming will be around as long as pc's are around.

Even integrated graphics pc's can play games, yes not good graphics games, but games none the less. It is a natural progression that anyone that is interested in playing any kind of games on pc and is interested in graphics will upgrade their pc accordingly, the same reason that people upgrade from ps2 to ps3 etc.

But with pc there is no backwards compatibility issue. I still play diablo 2 and starcraft, not a bad life span for a game like that, and it will only get better, with 3d games you can force any level of AA, AF, ambient occlusion, v-sync, triple buffering etc, and make old games better as time goes on, extending the life of the games as you extend the life of your pc, I used to be a console gamer and a pc gamer, but i realised that console's were just dead money. All those great ps2 games...unable to be played on ps3, all those great gamecube games that can't even be run through a digital cable to look decent on a hdtv, whether they're played through a gamecube or a wii.

I consider myself a pc enthusiast, but the point remains ( and i'm starting to realise this more atm) that my pc will last me for many more years, and i will still be able to play all new games at max settings for the next 3 years at least. (with low levels or no aa for the newer one's), and that's without dropping down from my native res of 1680*1050.

Something was written on n4g a while back that i found interesting that it had not been pointed out before....monitor prices should also not be considered in the price of a pc rig, for the same reason that when talking about the price of a console you don't include a new tv price. The pc box should be compared to the console box, and the pc is more than comparable for price/performance....and the number 1 reason why pc gaming will be around forever, pc's do alot more than play games, so you don't need to buy an entire pc from scratch, if you have a moderate pc, add 1 good gpu, bam, gaming pc.

For the inevitable "PC Gaming is dying" comment:

If PC gaming suddenly faded out of existence, gaming as we know it would be dead. There would be little room for hardware advancements. i.e, the hardware manufacturers that make GPU's (Nvidia and ATI) wouldn't be able to push the boundaries anymore, and technological advancements in gaming hardware would pretty much cease. Consoles are made with hammydown PC components for cost effectiveness.

If Microsoft and Sony just stopped making consoles, the hardware industry wouldn't really care. Nvidia and ATi would continue to press forward with gaming tech advancements, developers and publishers would flock to PC in a hurry and everything would continue as usual.

And a lot of top selling games started as PC game mods or stand-alone PC games. The indie scene would disappear as well.

Trust me, console gaming will die before PC gaming does. Just because PC gaming isn't as mainstream in the media anymore doesn't mean it's dying.

I don't think PC gaming is dying, (look at all the people just playing WOW), but it is more of a niche than mainstream. It takes a far greater commitment than just hooking up a console. Beside the fact that I've never gotten a virus on a console. I think there is plenty of room for all types of gaming. Cutting edge--PC, mainstream--console, quick and portable--handhelds and phone games.

9 - Cold. Obvious. Truth.
PC gaming is dying? Hardly..

Now has it lost some forward driving momentum in the shadow of the mainstream consoles? Arguably, yes.

I like the topic, but the over-all list is probably the most non-informative nor interesting top-ten list i've read in a while.

Maybe the word I'm looking for is redundant. Everything on that list is already known by everybody who plays games.. PC's have a keyboard and a mouse?! Since when? What, you can upgrade the hardware too!? Get out, thats Incredible...

-hopefully picking up the sarcasm-

HighEnd PC's give future console's a benchmark to shoot for.. thus, for as long as we, mankind, have fingers, people will play games on PC's.

Most of us, however, will just stick to consoles for their idiot-proof usage ability, the cheaper price.... oh yea and the games.

(PC has a few gems... yes, but support for consoles is casting a VERY large shadow over support for pc titles, respectively.)

Not my choice, I go where the games go, and these days, *MOSTLY* it is not on a PC.

The PC can never play PS3 exclusives. That's a strong argument as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, the PC is a good platform, and many games natively support the 360 controller. I'm looking forward to Borderlands, L4D2, Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, and whatever 360 Fanboys brag about, lol.
