I disagree with Gordon being the "Greatest Hero" of gaming. He effectively no personality or character what-so-ever. All his actions are the players, people probably think he's great because everyone in HL2 goes on about how great he is.
Whilst I suppose he is a good hero, he certainly isn't the best.

He's not the best for me personally, but he IS very good and one of my favs.

That's because he's very intelligent and badass at the same time, and you can kinda see him become the savior of mankind through all of his actions. Pretty cool.

Plus, his crowbar makes him a very iconic and memorable character. He's like gaming's Ash Campbell (guy with the chainsaw-arm from Evil Dead trilogy)

awesome, i foolishly bought the episode pack ( not realising that the orange box hand them both+ the original half life 2- the box says episode 2 on the front), so i'll get the original half life 2 from steam

Gabe's god damn awesome.

I've exchanged emails with him on a number of occasions, and so have many other people on the Steam forums and Facepunch forums. He always replies with witty or sarcastic responses. I'm sure there's a collection of them somewhere.

Honestly, what other AAA game developer CEO would personally respond to fanmail.

Are you kidding me? I don't think people noticed this was a contest to point out the icon of all gaming. The best character of all time. The one person to represent all of the gaming world. The best of all time.

Ok now, let's put Gordon Freeman in the sentence.

Gordon Freeman is the best hero of all time. He is the icon of all gaming. He is the best character ever. He is the one person to represent all of the gaming world. He is simply the best of all time.

Does that fit at all? NO.

Hell, give it to Solid Snake or Link. Iconic, unique, famous characters with a lot behind them. Damn, maybe even give it to Master Chief or Mario. But Gordon Freeman? F(#& no. He is barely know outside of the PC fanbase, he isn't original, he isn't cool, he has no personality at all... He's just mediocre. The type of character you can create in 10 minutes. I'm obviously not discussing the quality of Half Life games, which are unquestionable, but seriously, best gaming hero of all freakin' time, better than every single one out there? I don't think so.

Well, mr. earthbounding, obviously gamespot is not going to please everybody with their choice for the greatest all time hero, but you are missing the biggest part of what makes the character of gordon freeman so incredible (to most everybody but yourself, apparently).

Yes, he's the personality of a shoe; he's not all to chatty, I for one believe him to be without a mouth perhaps, either way, the character you play in the half-life titles is so unique (originally) that is re-defined the genre... twice .. twice!

You see, he's not awesome because he has a cool vizor like the master chief, he doesn't have the content and emotion heavy dialogue of solid snake.. he is you. Gordon Freeman is the gamers window; surrogate perhaps, into the reality of the title. That my friend, was what was so remarkable.. you are not the character by choosing his clothes or buying him houses or combing his man-tastic mustache -- you become the character immediately never straying from his exact line of site and what he witnesses and accomplishes.

With this "never leave gordon's site" mechanic, you believe you are him and hearing a voice that isn't yours voicing gordon would detract from the goal illusion.

It's been copied to death now, but with both core titles came a change in a way we as gamers receive the content personally.. Master Chief made me appreciate a genre demonstration done well; but it sure as hell did not make me re-think the concept; and mario just made me hate italians. Different strokes, different folks, but on this topic in particular - there is far more about choosing an all time hero of gaming on more than just how cool he is.
