Yamauchi Interview Reveals More on GT5 Development

GTPlanet provides translation of the interview: "Unfortunately, most "journalists" who get the chance to interview Kazunori Yamauchi are largely clueless about the current state of the franchise. As a result, they ask the same questions to which the answers don't really matter, delivered with the same rabid, impatient schoolboy mentality that seems to plague many people on the Internet these days. Needless to say, while this interview method can provide some sensational headlines, it does nothing to connect with the man or the company behind Gran Turismo. That's what makes this interview with Xavier Ocampo, Japanese correspondent at MeriStation, so incredibly refreshing and insightful.

Xavier, who has a long history of friendship with Yamauchi-san, offers rare, personal impressions of his time at Polyphony Digital – all while providing us with much more information about the development status of Gran Turismo 5 than anyone who has gone before. Indeed, a quick skim of the article already revealed a "secret" GT5 trailer. The only problem, of course, is that MeriStation is a Spanish-language site, making Xavier's full work inaccessible to many international GT fans unless they wanted to sift through an awkward machine translation. To help out, GTPlanet user Tenacious D smoothed out the rough edges, offering up the text in a much more accessible format. It's long – 4,743 words, to be exact – but after reading it you'll have a much better understanding of both and Gran Turismo 5 and Yamauchi-san. Thank you, Xavier, for this wonderful look inside Polyphony Digital."

1.3 - I dont know which to praise more
so I'll praise both PD and the Great interview.

If all gaming websites committed to releasing at least 1 piece of journalism like that a month, then the Gaming world would be better for it almost overnight.

I've been playing Gran Turismo since 1999, 10 years later, these guys are still as passionate as ever to do their best. and to think that some a$$hole think that they were "passed the baton". I wonder what gave them that impression? the must have seen one of the PD employees come to work with his sleeping bag, and think "oh he's going to sleep, he's passing the baton".

the description of the new footage is epic.

http://gameinformer.com/gam...

As with Gran Turismo 4, you’re free to ogle your cars in photo mode. This time around, though, players will see their vehicles as never before. “In GT5, the level of detail on the tracks and the scenery – and also on the cars themselves – has just exponentially increased,” says Yamauchi. “I think the quality of the image that you can get is going to be not even comparable. We’re trying to make it so that at a minimum you’ll be able to take 8 megapixel pictures. We might be able to raise it up to about 20 megapixels, but I can’t promise anything.”

20 megapixels!

"Just then came the story of the day. While we were listening to the sensei’s dissertations, I noticed the presence of a woman. Quite attractive indeed. By turning my head a few degrees to see the rest of colleagues from the media, I could see that they also had “detected” the presence of the employee. Moreover, it appeared that nobody was paying attention to Yamauchi any more. All had their eyes fixed on the girl. It seemed so funny that I couldn’t fight down a laugh. Absolutely innocent, I swear. It was all so hilarious. My companions immediately understood the reason for my laughter, as well as Yamauchi. Being nobody’s fool, he told us, “You can take pictures and record video if you want.” Although he did not specify whether it was the girl who had to immortalize, all ran like a pack of wolves stalking their prey. She immediately saw that she was the center of attention and posed very nicely (and with some embarrassment) in the middle of her work. This went on for several minutes until Yamauchi said, “I think that is enough, gentlemen.” And on our way we went."

So much respect from manufacturers and motorsports.
Such classy people.
So much attention to detail.

Lying obnoxious cowards.

3 - What happens when a dev puts true love and passion into their work?
You get Gran Turismo. Say all you want about how they are slow, boneheaded, uncommunicative, etc. but nobody can deny that PD and Yamauchi truly puts his soul into the game, and it shows. Nothing else can match it.

3.1 - Nothing else has ^^ -
and nothing will as far as I can tell. These folks are at the pinnacle of their game and honestly, I hope that devs like T10 keep coming along to talk rubbish and stir up controversy, because it just makes PD work harder and makes the competition look so much more sophomoric and irrelevant altogether. Apprentice meet thy master.

Great, great article. Thanks Cat.

Some of the quotes in this article were pulled out and were submitted as articles here on N4G recently, but it was very nice to actually read everything in it's entirety... one of the best interview articles with Yamauchi that I've probably ever read.

Sure, 5 years is a long wait for a Racing Sim, but just like with Fumito Ueda's games, Gran Turismo games have always been worth the wait for me, and sometimes achieving near perfection and a higher attention to detail than the competition comes at that cost....If all developers had the mentality of Kojima, Yamauchi, and Ueda in terms of attention to detail and perfection, I'd be in gaming heaven right now.

And I'm glad Yamauchi hasn't said anything in regards to Turn 10's dribble... he knows they are just trying to hype up and sell their game, but after 50 Million of sales in the GT franchise, his work obviously speaks for itself.

4.1 - I wholeheartedly agree
While most out there are chasing the almighty dollar, the three that you pointed to, are the examples that all should follow. They see their games as works of art, places to express their passion and creativity, and it shows.

With each of their games, long waits are to be expected, to which I am more than willing to do. For I know once they do come out, it will all be worth it.

8 - one of the main reason that Forza will always be left behind by GT is that
Kaz himself is a professional racer, so he is probably the best game tester himself and makes change of the things on the fly. he understands and knows how the car is handle and what it should feel like.

Wow Polyphony sure do know how to shoot their mouth prematurely. Let's just hope they aren't shooting their own foot. All we've seen from GT5 are graphics, and mostly not ingame driving graphics anyway. More gameplay please, there are only so many childish fanboys out there who prefer gloss.

How exactly did they shoot their mouths prematurely?

If anything you've just demostrated the typical arrogance Turn 10 have been displaying, and with no logic or reason what so ever. Worrying about GT's graphics is like worrying Donald Trump wont be able to pay for dinner.

The only real thing that could be interpreted as "shooting their mouth off" would be when kaz said "expect perfection" (perfection is a bit far) and maybe there's a reason why he said it? like he works better when the pressure is on, so he said it to keep the expectations of people extremely high therefore making him work harder?

There seems to be a lot of confusion here...

But let me ask those who played GT PSP.

How many tracks are there in the PSP game ? And I think we can all agree that whatever tracks that are in GT PSP, will definately be in GT5 and then some more tracks.

I would love to play gt psp, but, i dont have a psp. Not a fan of handhelds unfortunately.

21 - PSP no career mode....
Maybe the GT5 series is the career mode. To those who want the extra cars, they can do so on their PSP (on their way to work, going back home) and then continue the career mode with fresh new cars.

Back to the topic, I'm very interested about that "private" viewing of the night time cycle and damage (which left many impressed) and not vice-versa in the TGS or GamesCon. If I were Turn 10 and I had to read this article, I'll be shaking in my very knees.

Bunch of perves.

If I was Yamauchi I would tell them to get out of the studio not only for disturbing an employee but for making a women loose her honour as a women and for looking at her as a sex tool rather than an educated women just to fulfil their lustful desires, and if some of those men were married then that makes it even worse.
