Sony Prototype Sends Electricity Through the Air

Despite the numerous technologies that exist for sending data through the air there's one cable that most gadgets can't do without at some time. The power cable remains a necessary but sometimes unsightly part of many modern electronic appliances -- but now even that might be on the way out.

Sony has developed a prototype power system that can send enough electricity to power a television set wirelessly over a short distance, it said Friday. In tests the company succeeded in sending a conventional 100 volt electricity supply over a distance of 50 centimeters to power a 22-inch LCD television.

Yeah the Palm pre has an induction charger but it still has to be in contact with the dock.

The palm pre transfers 200 watts of electricity wirelessly?

Ummm I don't think so and I don't think any device in the world does.

EDIT: Samsung and Sony have already developed and are on the verge of standardising wireless 3D HD TV's and now here we are with Sony testing out wireless electricity so this how it'll be in 2014:

completely wireless PS4
completely wireless 3D 2160 HD res/300Hz ULTRA Thin TV
No need for HDMI cables

Basically I'll be able to play catch with my PS4 while someone in family's playing Uncharted 4 lol

4 - Definitely will give this one a pass..
Personally, I can't say I'm to comfortable knowing hundreds of watts are flying by around me.
The whole... getting a fairly bad electric shock from a f*cked wire kinda makes me nervous about the whole concept. Hey it could work, but I'd much rather stick with wires, where I know where the electricity is.

4.1 - You're thinking of the wrong thing
The title is misleading. From what I can gather, it's just electromagnetic induction; a changing magnetic field producing the movement of electrons.

I bet you have an image in your head of sparks travelling through the air, but it's nothing like that, it's just a magnet.

Yeah I don't think you need to worry unless your entire body is tuned to the same resonance frequency as the magnets haha. Though I'll admit, the first image that popped into my head was my house burning down lol

No, they're wrong.

All it takes is rubbing your socks on the rug too much and then touching a light switch. You could literally explode.

One second your friend is taking his shoes off in your apartment, and the next he's all over your walls. Also, the bastard made you lose electricity, and didn't stick around to clean up the mess he made (well technically he did stick around...you know what I mean).

On the plus side the unemployment rate has dropped and the cleanser market is booming. On a hopefully unrelated note, beef and pork sales have decreased dramatically.

Yeah, I just read it.

Pretty interesting, magnetic fields within range of each other are used to transfer the electricity, but it must be really experimental, about..50% of electricity used was wasted?

Either way, this is good progression.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Mc Fadge - 95 days 10 hours ago
6.3 - "Proper" transformers aren't experimental
Electricity around the world is proof of this :)

But the ones Sony are making have no soft iron core, which makes it much less efficient. It's just a huge magnetic field
Shut this user up Let user speak
Mc Fadge - 95 days 11 hours ago
7 - Interesting
But if they want to make it larger, it will have drawbacks. The magnetic field produced could potentially mess with the electrical components they're trying to provide power to. It porbably won't be benficial for people with pacemakers, and then there's small everyday things, hell even cables in the walls. They could cause a back emf and hamper the electricity supplied to other electrical equipment.

7.1 -
It's the same wave-length that the earth naturally produces the varying degree of power would not have much affect on humans even those with pace makers.

To make it the point where you would see adverse affects is that the force would have to be so strong that it would pull the iron molecules out of your body and by then buildings would be collapsing.

It's just a magnetic field.

Don't picture lighting bolts violently leaping through the air, and when you put your hand between the start and end points you get fried.

It is just a large magnet.

I don't think this is originally from the loins of Sony though. I watched a presentation from TED about this whole thing and either Sony is hopping on board or has somehow got their hands around the individual(s) with the patent.

I for one do not have high hopes for this, as the same thing will probably happen as it did with OLED, Sony dropped out because it was not cost effective. Same thing is likely to happen hear folks, and if its not then don't expect this to be ready for a long long long long time, unless of course your willing to spend £1k on a bit of kit for the convenience of saving a meter of trip free carpet.

Lol It's a method of conversion, you don't BLAST electricity out from a source besides that's not very convenient. You send out electromagnetic waves that are totally harmless to human beings and animals, how do we know this? because the Earth emits the very same waves because of the iron core. We just don't have the technology to harness it the same way we can produce it.

By now it would have been standard as tesla sent power across miles of distance not just inches...

That's exactly what this reminded me of. I remember back in my physics class, my teacher was telling me about the concept of wireless electricity that involved and that fellow, Nikola Tesla's name came up. The concept of wireless electricity originates from the ability to control free-floating electrons in space and direct them through a makeshift current using magnetism.

I heard about this on BBC World radio about 3 or 4 months ago. There was a demonstration at Oxford University where this guy had developed a working system that powered a room full of conventional appliances/consumer electronics without wires, in a room i think that was roughly 4x4 metres if i remember correctly. All the appliances, TV's etc were current, over the counter goods, with only a minor modification in the power connection. Apparently its nearly 100% efficient, because appliances only use the exact amount of power they need, and only when they're on, there's no power 'bleeding'.

They said they were waiting for a corporation to buy out the tech.

Sony must be developing their own system, seeing as it seems they're a bit behind.

As a few others have stated it uses magnetic induction, no actual electricity flying through the air. People please research before showing ignorance and making uneducated comments of something you cannot obviously comprehend thus spreading more ignorance. This technology has been around for decades just not widespread to the general public. My sonicare toothbrush that I've had since 2001 uses inductive charging where no actual wires are plugged into the toothbrush to charge it just the magnetic inductive field that the base emits to charge it when it sits on it.

21 - I love innovation but....
it would be nice when something like this is invented if at the same time they found a way to counter the harmful EMF's/resonating frequencies, to those who do not know what many of us are talking about your body/brain runs at a set frequency, i am not 100% but I think it is 14hz, and the problem is we have so many items now that can interfere with the bodies own frequency, when this happens it can cause cell mutation/cancer because the bodies natural balance is being affected 1st at a frequency level and then at a cellular level, so yes it is innovative but is it safe?

very cool especially that it's coming from sony. call me a fanboy..err fangirl, i don't care, sony's products are reliable and i chose them even outside gaming.
anyway, who needs wireless electricity? not life saving technology, and if u read the article, u will learn what kind of technology, or rather properties of magnets, they r using is really simple, nothing ground breaking here
