Microsoft Wishes it was as Agile as Sony

Microsoft's Neil Thompson has said that the plan to make the Xbox 360 the "home entertainment hub" has been realised. However, he's also said that Microsoft is not as agile as Sony.

1.6 - "Q: You'll be aware that Sony has recently been focusing on the non-gaming aspects for its recent PlayStation 3 marketing - is this a response to that campaign, or something you've been working on prior to that?" A: "In some ways I wish we were that agile [smiles]."
Come on you guys. He's replying to the specific manner in which the question was asked, concerning Microsoft's response to Sony's marketing strategies. Obviously he's being cavalier with his comment about wishing Microsoft was as quick to react. He probably smiled because the question was AMUSING to him.

It wasn't about giving props to Sony at all.

hey mods, can we get ChrisW removed from the gamer zone? I've just looked at his comment history and this is one big stain on the website that N4G doesn't need.

Preferably removed from the site altogether would be nice.

Interesting thing for an employee of Microsoft to say. Good to hear a bit of humility from them.

P.S., can we get some mods in here to delete ChrisW's nazi rhetoric, please?

For the record if you had an Xbox-360 then you would probably be ignored by more posters, my comment history does not show that I should be ignored by 39 users, this is more a case of bias towards what system a person owns, I actually nearly appologised to you because I thought i misread your comment but then I realized you were infact trying to goad people into argument, and as I can see you like to check stats allow me to take your ignore count form 7 to 8.

Actually the question asked is wondering whether or not their new ad campaign was in response to sony's, and his reply was saying he wishes they were agile enough to respond that quickly rather than having it all worked out already and appearing that they were agile.

Well let's be honest here, Sony has always position the PS3 as a central entertainment unit and a product that reaches every demographic. I think Microsoft made a console geared towards the hardcore gamer and then realized it could reach that mass market audience and then added all these other functionalities and services like Netflix.

well actually the Xbox360 is aimed toward halo fans and shooters. The PS3 is everything since there's a diversity in the Playstation gaming community. And no, one size does not fit all.

Ugh, an article about 1 sentence he made in relation the question. In the actual source interview, gamesindustry.biz indicated that he was smiling when he made that comment. Obviously this entails sarcasm or some other reference rather than saying that they are 'literally' weak in that respect. (basically, he could be making fun of Sony or indicating that Microsoft doesn't have a problem marketing other features besides gaming) my 2 cents anyway.

Reading comprehension. The person who wrote this article grossly misunderstood that segment of the interview. Thompson is not giving Sony credit, and he's not bashing them.

"Q: You'll be aware that Sony has recently been focusing on the non-gaming aspects for its recent PlayStation 3 marketing - is this a response to that campaign, or something you've been working on prior to that?"

A: "In some ways I wish we were that agile [smiles]."

Obviously he's not envying Sony's offerings at all. Totally misconstrued. He's talking about marketing.

You guys have nailed it.

Thompson was making a joke about Sony's repeated flip-flopping marketing tactics, and the author didn't get it!

The interview (in proper context) can be read here:
http://www.gamesindustry.bi...
Any fool can see that Thompson had his tongue firmly planted in-cheek...

... Funny to see a pro-ps3 blog misinterpret and spin this.

... Funnier still to see the ps3 fanboys jump on this misinformation like a pack of rabid dogs....

6 - On purpose he is
implying that Sony is able to focus on other media entertainment apart from gaming unlike them which are more focused on gaming. This is their stance right from the beginning.

What he seems to forget is Sony is delivering more on gaming as well compare to them.

This is true. Speaking in direct terms, Sony as a company is delivering many MANY more first party titles than Microsoft. And this year, the PS3 has had the superior line up. So I dunno why he is suggesting they focus more on gaming than Sony.
I mean this year I've accumulated 7 PS3 games. 6 being exclusives, and the years not even over.
That said, I like this guy. He's not a prick like the rest of the Microsoft PR guys. He needs to speak for them more which will give the company a better image.

10 - I can understand exactly what he is saying even though I dont like the Sony (right now)
Let me make that clear... I dont like how Sony has moved with the Ps3 this generation. I feel that all of the technical advances that they put in to the system are completely hanpered by lack of vision. I think all they wanted to do was the same thing they did last gen, meaning a new disc format and a bunch of games. They have been forced in to providing online services and movie market places and Home. All that stuff is thanks to Microsoft.

People dont get it but the reason the 360 sells so well and moves tons of hardware and even has people come back to it after the sytem rrod's is it feels like a complete experience. That is something that is in tangible but everything just fits and flows from voice chat to trophies games on demand video marketplace, netflix, even avatars and games that use them. Sony does alot of the same stuff but it feels blocky and unrealized like HOME. Its a grand idea but i'd rather be playing a game of 1 vs 100 than running around home.

Even with all that said when it comes to making a perfect entertainment hub Sony has all the assets in place. They have a movie studio and a long history of great games and hardware, they need to become more risk takers really try to advance something (like change the controller it been the same for over 10 years) stop trying to live off of the fanbase by appeasing them and not changing things appease them by making new and improved things.

Microsoft has struck deep into the market and there image has improved in the gaming industry significantly they have made some major moves with some stubles along the way but for the most part totally successful.

Gotta be fake, MS studio's are the fastest developers in the world, along side EA.
This is due the strict process management that MS and EA handle.
Just look at how Gears 2 got out 2 years after gears 1, and Forza3 2 years after forza 3, and how both games managed to make quite a leap from their predecessors.
And next year, Fable 3 will arrive as well.

Epic isn't a Microsoft studio. Gears 2 was quick because of the assets already available. The code was tweaked but was just the Gears version of Unreal 3. Having the people that wrote the engine and tools, wrote as well as developed the previous game why there was speed. In the case of Epic it has little to do with MS other than the fact the QA people let slide a game with some major issues that took over half a year to patch.

Then explain Fable and Forza, if your so good to explain Epic.
And the reason they have the available assets, is cause they plan it that way, aka process management, this way they take the most out of development time.

@Foxgod

Trying to explain Forza and Fables, would be like trying to explain Sony games like Rachet and Clank, Resistance, Uncharted etc. You asked for it when you used GeOW (poor choice, since it's not a 1st party game) as an example. Hopefully, you're not going to say Microsoft studios puts out more 1st party games next.

Forza isn't out yet. Once it is you might want to ask if it is good to get a game out so quickly when it will have issues.

Regarding Fable it goes back to the same issue as with Epic. ALthough it is a MS studio in this case you are looking the same thing. The same company did the original, built on that code, etc etc. Go back and ask, "How much was vastly different and new in the successive title. Not small matters, or that soemthing looks a little better, but ratehr a huge new gmae addition. Example, a title never had Multiplayer and now it has full blown MP. That is a major innovation for a title.

Sony= Music, Film studios, Cameras, Tv's, Computers, Cd players, car steroes, cell phones, Gaming, and prolly alot more

MS= Operating system, IE, gaming, and prolly a little more.

and i do realize that MS does have its hand in film and music but what im getting at is sony has Sony pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment.

So yea id say Sony is alot more Agile.

Actually, Sony has 3 movie companies; Sony entertainment, Columbia Tristar, and MGM (Rocky/James Bond etc.). They make up 3 of 8 major studios, 1 of 6 if you count all 3 Sony studios as one. In addition, they have Sony and BMG music brands.

Sony has always been more flexible. Crazier ideas, more innovative, take greater risks!

Thats why i personally prefer to have a PS3 since i have to have a choice, because it gives me more "flexibility" in terms of my experience =)

One question comes to my mind. Is MS going to release a slimmer 360? If you think about it, that could be a scapegoat to make a more rock solid system(less problems). It would draw me in to be honest.

Now when Sony integrated the DVD in the PS2 that wasn't their format. They put it in the early stages of its adoption where it caught on to the mainstream of production in games using the DVD format. Was that not using new and improved things?

Same thing applied this generation with the PS3. They integrated the Blu Ray format for game reproduction using a format created by Sony themselves in which they felt that a larger capacity disc and HD format was right for gaming, and they were correct. You see bigger games now coming out with a lot of capacity. granted not all of the but lets say another year or so most games will be bigger and more attractive to the consumer because of depth. DVD is still in use of course but look at its limitations. Multiple discs for games such as RPG's, ODST two discs. Things will change and fast. Is Blue Ray not using new and improved format? I think so. In fact it was a huge risk. Its now paying off.

Also why does the controller have to change? People love it! Some things must change but not everything. That controller has felt great since the PS1 with a few modifications. They added blutooth to it to play wirelessly. Also they added a battery inside the controller which you charge as opposed to buying batteries every so often.

So I think i've proven a few things which you've said that doesn't add up. Think about it for a minute.
