Why Xbox LIVE is Worth the Money - And PSN Is Not

"I'm going to come clean about it, I love Xbox Live. Yes, I pay every single year for the privilege to enjoy the multiplayer components of my games. But there is substantially more to it than just being able to play games with other people. Live offers several features that are available to silver members, however gold sets itself apart far and wide in comparison. The simple ability for multiplayer gives way to features that work so seamlessly, more often than not, I forget that I have paid for the service. Add to that the ability to watch movies, among other content as well as have access to content early just for being a gold member and the cost for a year breaks down to an almost negligible monthly cost. But, I don't want to negotiate numbers; I want to remind everyone why gold is a service that is actually worth spending your hard earned money on since it ties the entire Xbox experience together in a way that I'm yet to see other services do so as fluidly. Sorry but no i dont have to read it , or believe it actually got any valid point ...

Why ? it's not even a "us vs them" , "ps3 vs 360" thing ... i have a rule of thumb .

If the title is idiotic , a gruesome spin (negative or positive) , and obviously biased , i usually dont bother with clicking the link .

And i'm rarely wrong about that , those titles are the drug of many blogs , sensationalism and thrill seeking journalism , or fanboy fuelled war effort .
I just hardly believes an article with this kind of title is worth a damn .

Utimolu - Well, it's not just XBL. There are articles justifying purchasing a PS3, or some game, or whatever else over a competing product. 99% of these articles are simply for creating a controversy and getting hits. The remaining 1% actually offer useful facts and features that allow us to make a better decision.

It's actually a nice op ed piece. It doesn't spend the time bashing the opposition, but highlights Live as an all encompassing online service with many different facets that are constantly growing and are being fed.

It's a good reminder of how Live is more of an investment.

He also says he wouldn't mind paying a little for the PSN if it guaranteed quality.

The one stand-out feature I LOVE about XBL is inside Xbox. Instant streaming of updates from TGS, developers, short interview clips, etc. There's always something to watch.

And when I started browsing the games and video content, it's a giant pool of media where I'd literally get lost in.

So I think my PSN brothers need to stop hating on Live for no reason. It's actually a very good service.

Sarcasm is right. What is mentioned is part of 'robustness' I always mention when comparing live to PSN. And you dont have to be a gold memeber to get those things. PSN is outstanding for free. But is still off from XBL. I would prefer if Sony charged something to use it to make it better.

Problem is Sarcasm , your post could make someone not aware believe it's a XBl exclusivity .
it hardly is so ... ok we got more vids and content on XBL , but more on XBl doesnt mean that PSN got nothing in comparison .... especially with free services like Home , Vidzone , and basically the same video renting and sales system .

But it's not even a problem , the silliest thing , is when other misguided , or misinformed people , or simply even troll , start spreading lies about lag issues with PS3 and better internet performance on 360 .

From the beginning we played our exclusives and most of the multiplatform lag free . Hell the 360 didnt even had anything close to Warhawk in scope and numbers of connectees back , and had it's fair share of down time (nothing anormal i'd say but still...) but it's supposed to be the robust one , and the psn the weak link ?

Lack of cross voice chat dont make games lags lol ...

Both works great and always have, it boils down to preferences in games and services .

Yeah, I can do all that stuff too (and for free) and I even don't have a 360.
Nowadays it's not hard to find videos. Kotaku, Gametrailers, Youtube, pick one.

Live users pay, and on top of that, get ads thrown in your face. If MS offered dedicated servers for their games online, then yeah, I can see the justification, but they nickel and dime you for everything and offer you nothing of value. Videos are not of value. TGS updates are not of value.

Oh, and the whole argument that you don't have to subscribe to Live to play, well to that I say, it's like buying a TV without a remote. You'll get up for a while to change the channels, but at some point soon your going to get cave in and buy the remote. And that's how they get you.

There is one 360 feature that i find much more interesting and important than that whole obsession with cross voice chat :

mandatory demos for store games . pretty much every game you can buy on XBLA got a trial version , and while most do on PSN as well , it's a per case basis and not always there .

You don't get what you pay for. Live vs PSN is basically $600 million in subscription revenue vs $0.00. If you as a Live user are happy with the minor differences between Live and PSN and you're getting $600 million worth of improvements over it, more power to you.

($600 million derived from approx $50/year fee*12 million gold users. may be less, may be more but still a significant revenue stream)

It's remarkable how MS has brainwashed their legion into thinking, "it's only $50 for a year. that's just $4/month." So people think, yeah, Live is worth $4/month and offers a few features the PSN doesn't. USE SOME LOGIC PEOPLE! You're not the only Gold subscriber. There are MILLIONS of you. You should be demanding some seriously innovative features for Live considering the pool of money you're providing to MS each and every year.

One thing that I do hate about XBL is the Left 4 Dead DLC that came out today - why is it free on PC but 560 Points on XBL - so unfair and ridiculous, we pay for the service and PC gamers do not yet they get free content, ridiculous!

xbox live would be worth it it it was compatible with the PSP or Had HOME or Had a Browser or Let you Buy movies to own or had dedicated servers or has in game web browsers or even a bluray drive or had PSN exclusives or PSone Clssics and was Free.

Until then, you can justify all you want. We all know youre paying to play online primarily. unless, you pay to tweet and facebook on a xbox controller and really really really are in love with avatars.

i download torrent's on my ps3, so in my case streaming movies is redundant and my best friend exclusively uses his ps3 to facebook (i never understood why)PSN being free was a significant factor in my purchase in addition to all the other features sony offered. To me my choice of console was obvious from the start of this generation for me paying for an online service in addition to my connection was never something i would consider doing(but i can't lie i'm lookin forward to forza 3) i'll get a 360 at some point when i can afford it(live)

Anybody seriously suprized? Its a xbox web site for gods sake. Do you really think they would be like "hey PSN free service is better than xbox gold"? IMO gold isnt worth it to me cuz I dont use my 360 enough to justify it. I use that 50 bucks to buy a few games and play them for free on my PS3.
