Why Sony Should Have Made Firmware 3.01 Mandatory

Firmware update 3.01 was optional because not everyone was experiencing issues with freezing. I would suggest that new owners of consoles always check the official forums for advice. That way you always know what is going on.

Yeah, but some people don't go online to forums. Hell, some people don't even know how to mess with settings on their PS3. They take it out of the box, plug it in, and think they're good to go.

But unfortunately most new users probably wouldn't know where to begin. I doubt their first thought would be "I think I'll check the Official PlayStation Forums" as new gamers would be oblivious to it. Also, it wasn't optional because not everyone was experiencing the freezing, Sony noted that all of the minimal updates (paraphrasing) would be optional.

How is this article damning Sony? It simply points out how it probably would have been a better decision to make 3.01 mandatory and to possibly inspire common sense down the line. If you read the article then you would know that. Would you want the prequel to one of the biggest games of the year sitting out there with a glitch due to firmware 3.00 where users can't even progress? Yeah, I didn't think so.

I'm still running 3.00 and haven't had any issues with Uncharted. I'm now playing it again after beating Batman AA. Hoping to get more of the trophies prior to Uncharted 2 being released.

The funniest thing is that people will complain if Sony makes their firmware updates optional or required. No win situation for Sony.

3 - I don't think it should be mandatory
I think they did the right thing with that update, because I've had no problems with Firmware 3.0, so I'm not gunna download it since my PS3 works fine as it is. And if someone is dumb enough not to know how to check for a system update they don't deserve to use technology and should have their electricity cut off. God help us if those same people can drive O_O.

Yeah, but how many new users will realize that it's the system or the firmware? What's stopping them from going back to the retailer where they bought the game and complaining that it keeps freezing and then they demand their money back? This is especially true for those going from PS2 to PS3 where firmware updates were never a concern...

sounds like a whiny griper.

it doesn't matter anyway, everyone will be getting 3.10 next month with cross-game chatting and more, so poo on this report.

i hope i can start navigating the XMB and chatting with friends while watching blurays and movies now.

If you are aware of it already since update 2.80 i think .. if you go into xmb mode , your movie will pause

it's either watch Or chat...

i'm concerned since i kind of liked how i could check things while my movies were in the background ..but now i'm used to it ..

I reckon that since update 3.00 there have been lots of people who have bought Uncharted and returned it to the store thinking the game is faulty. Most new ps3 owners won't think of checking for updates or viewing the forums. There first reaction would be to return the game faulty. Then after the second copy of the game freezes they will assume thier ps3 is faulty and return that.

If updates are optional the there should at least be a message on screen telling you an optional update exists and also telling you what it fixes

thanks for letting me know, uncharted on my 60gig freezes everytime (played 3 times) after eddie got owned as u run away from the spaniards. anyways i already got plat and sold the game but good to know

No, 3.01 is NOT mandatory. The reason you were prompted was because you didn't have 3.00 yet and that WAS mandatory so they updated you to the latest version which was 3.01.

The optional update sucked, Now lots of people are having problems including myself in finding our laptops/pc's to stream off movies and pictures.

Sony messed up on this firmware.

My first comment in a while and I bet I will get a disagree this site has gone down the sh1tter.
