Lets be realistic. Unless the build shown at gamescon is an extremely old build, GT5 is not ready for release and should NOT be released this yr. I don't want a half game that will get completed with future patches i would much rather wait for a full game with quality features worth showing off. The game hardly even has damage done right, i honestly don't see how head tracking can be added in unless its already added in and still release the game for December

Unless there is going to be another GT5 prologue 2 or something...like i said GT5 is not ready for release

1.4 - sonarus, i'm not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with you......but.......
haven't you ever seen the message before a demo plays which states: " this demo is not a complete representation of what the final product will look and/or play like"?....or words to that effect.

just because the damage modeling didn't look "complete" to you at gamescom.......i'm guessing that was still a demo. (possibly from an old build) although, from what i've seen.....i'd take that game as is. it looked really nice. this "damage" thing seems to have become a new buzzword with a lot of people on the site.......

that example was rendered on 14 qs21 blade servers, they cost about $10,000 each. Also they were using an infra red camera not the ps eye

still might be good if they can pull it off on ps3 (can imagine leaning out of cover in uncharted 2, would be quite cool!)

1.6 - too many good news for PS3 in one day
wow, i don't mean to rub it in, but wow... seems like GT 5 gonna kill Forza 3 (the so-called definitive racing sim with no weather change, 2 discs, and "rewind" noob feature)

Headtracking with the PS3/PS-Eye has been shown before (I think in 2007). That's not new in itself, it's just new in a high profile game.

(BTW: Those 14qs21 were used to raytrace those 3M triangles. PS3 got a RSX to do that).

Now we know why GT5 has took so damn long with all this nice little features that is gonna make it THE ultimate racing game. I really think its on another level when compared to Forza etc...

My only complaint with this head tracking is.. When you turn your head in real life it is to see something next to you, when you do it in this game your eyes will still need to be looking forward (at the screen). The only way to really pull this off comfortably is to have three screens so that when you turn your head to the left, you can look at the screen on your left.

FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE COMPARING GT5 AND FORZA....

Please don't! GT5 is probably the biggest driving sim and Forza... well, I don't wana talk trash about it but lets just say GT5 owns Forza even though FORZA ain't bad but you just can't compare both of these games!

First let me say I didn't watch these videos so I don't know if this was covered in there or not (I'm guessing not since people are still saying you can't really pull it off). So now, for those saying that it would be hard or even impossible to truly pull off without hampering the gamer, not true at all. Got to actually look at it and even test it. Look at your tv, now turn your head yet keep your eyes fixed on the center of the tv. Not so hard is it? You can get some good motion in there before you hinder your vision of the screen. The only thing they need to do in this game is adjust the tracking ratio. For instance, if I turn my head only 10 degrees in real life, then the game needs to consider that as being like 20 degrees. That way you only have to turn your head 45 degrees (which gives you a very clear view of the tv still) to be able to make your character look straight to his left or right.

"Want to see how close your opponents are to catching up? Turn your head and look at the wing mirror. Want to see which gear you're using? Look down at the transmission and see for yourself as you would in a real car. Want to check out the racing line beyond the next corner? Look beyond the turn just like real drivers do."

Cool as Hell! This feature alone makes the game absolutely outstanding!

That video on GTplanet is a poor representation of how head tracking would work in a racing game.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

This guy uses a PC ir head tracking camera. Skim to 2/3rd of the video and he demonstrates it.

tbh it's only useful for racing games if you have a 3 monitor set up else you turn your head to the right and guess what, you're no longer looking at the screen

Not just for 3 monitors. But I agree, most useful in c0ckpit view. E.g. take a look at the mirror, peek around inside the c0ckpit, etc. Should give you a complete new gaming experience, IMO.

4.5 - Re: 3 monitors
Mmmm, no, I think you've got it wrong. This wouldn't be for looking left-right onto adjoining monitors. Think of it more like looking thru a window (e.g. windshield). If you lean forward a bit, you can peer thru the window and get a bit more peripheral vision to your left or right. You're not turning your whole head to the side. This might well be useful for looking thru a corner, seeing the vehicle right alongside, etc.

I'm hoping this is indeed included in the final game.

4.6 - you wont have to take your eyes off the screen to turn
On the related videos I forgot which one I saw, but they explain the headtracking and how it will pick up your small head movements, so if you need to look behind you for any reason you wouldn't have to do a full head turn and look away from the screen, you could look behind you and still have your eyes looking at the screen.
I think it would be pretty much like this, http://www.youtube.com/watc... I found the link :D It's the part when he talks about motion scaling.

I don't know why people keep insisting that if you turn your head that your eyes turn with your head. You people do understand that your eyes aren't in a locked position of looking straight ahead at all times right? I mean I can sit here and look at the computer monitor, turning my head (quite a good ways at that) and the center point of my vision never changes. In other words: YOUR EYES MOVE TOO PEOPLE! They don't HAVE to follow your head movement. So there's room to work with there. More than enough.

everyone is talking about damage. If damage is the best thing when it comes to racing games, then the greatest racing game of all time is Burnout Paradise! I like the customization capability of Forza 3 than it's damage, and I will be happy as well if GT5 has no damage. GT1,2,3, and 4 all has no damage but us it a bad game??????? Damage is nice addition but stop making such a big deal out of it.

I'm going to buck the trend and disagree, it's true that the previous GT games have all been of a very high standard, but I expect some form of evolution in games. By following your way of thinking we don't want or need voice chat for multiplayer, no form of visual customisation.

Damage is a good feature in racing games, playing GT5 prologue on line is a pain, as the bumping penalty system is hardly foolproof, giving players a lasting penalty (damage) for shunting other players is a much better preventative method.

I think the big deal about it was the fact they call this game a racing simulator. They are realistic in every aspect of driving except the fact the cars did not receive damage.

This feature just authenticates everything else. That is why it is important. This game needs to have EVERY feature.

100% agree with you leeger. I never understood the be-all-end-all mentality about damage. I have no use for it in the game really at all. Penalty for running into walls or something, yes. Actual damage? Could care less.

@Pennywise
But that shouldn't be held again PD. They have been one of the greatest driving sims (greatest ever on console), the actual physical damage though has nothing to do with them. Up until this point (and even now still to a degree it seems), they aren't ALLOWED to have that damage due to the car manufacturers not letting them.

This tech is old news...But it's about time we see it in games. That's actually what I considered to be one of the most obvious feature of Natal (which is supposed to be more precise).

In hundred million dollar movies they still stick a hundred balls to people for motion capture. Does anyone believe MS is going to do this with Natal for an affordable price, without the little balls? Why are they spending millions on studios for motion capture? Wouldn't somebody in the film and game business have figured this out before? And from what we've seen so far, it doesn't work!

Have you ever seen a dude behind a curtain? Bam... There it is!!!

I'm gonna say the same thing i said about Natal's head tracking in an FPS

"But if you turn your head you're not looking at the screen!!!"

Edit: Actually after looking at that vid beardpapa posted it does seem to work well. Much faster than flicking the analog back and forth.

I think this feature is not really about GT5 but about Playstation Eye, sony wants to push as much Playstation Eye cameras as possible, so when the motion controller finally arrives alot more people adopt to them as they already have the camera. In that sense they are trying to mitigate the initial cost of entry for Sony's motion controller. Lets see how much successful this strategy will be.

11 - lol at this article
This article is full of fail. The video you provided is something thats completely different from what GT5 will have. The video is about full headtracking and changing the perspective according to position of your head. It requires a lot of processing power and completely redesigned game engine in order to Gt5 to have it.

What GT5 will have is just tracking your head movement to turns of right or left and then turning the camera to right or left which is what can you already do with D-pad on the wheel. Its just changing a CONTROL of whats already in the game. The camera movement is already in the game. Plz remove the video from this article. Its something completely different.
