GC09: Discussing Nier With Producer Takayuki Kawasaki

Shaun McIlroy of One Last Continue writes:

During our time in the Square Enix business lounge at Gamescom 2009 we became so relaxed that once we left my appointment for Final Fantasy XIV, Team OLC strolled into Nier thinking that nothing else could surprise us. We were wrong.

They seem to have liked it, but then again all previewers like the game to get the exclusive info.

Being open-world sounds interesting though, as well as the subquests and new game plus.

I enjoyed Nier purely because although it was pre-alpha there was enthusiasm and openness on the part of Kawasaki, and also because the in-game action actually seemed different and refreshing for Square-Enix.

Yer, I wasn't accusing of anything I just don't tend to trust previews as they're pretty much never negative.;)

Well I'm glad there's enthusiasm there, that's always a good sign. Does sound strange for Square Enix but Cavia generally do hack and slash adventures. I hope it's as good as Drakengard was.

Do you think it can escape the generic complaints and also do well in an overcrowded market(Dante's Inferno, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, God of War, Brutal Legend... hey it might even face competition from Mini Ninjas!)?

I know you weren't being negative ;)

I think honestly when we get to see more of the gameplay mechanics, especially the party system, then we will likely be able to get a better feel for it in terms of quality. What I did see was interesting, but then again it was really just a pre-alpha demo with some English voice acting.

Cool, well thanks for the info anyway.

The party system may be like Drakengard's where you controlled the main character but could switch to others.
