Sony's Edward Talks PlayStation Home As It Hits 7 Million Users

Sony's online social gaming service Home may have had something of a troubled gestation, but it's maturing quickly and offers many opportunities for publishers, according to Peter Edward, director of the PlayStation Home platform for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Since the launch of the open beta in November 2008, the PlayStation 3-exclusive online world Home has gained 7 million inhabitants worldwide, 3 million of which are in Europe, and they have downloaded 6 million virtual items.

Edward said the global figure for downloads scales with users, but he was unable to disclose a precise total. The average Home session duration is 56 minutes.

2 - Home....
Home is coming into it's own. It might not be what gamers want it to be currently, but I think it's successful as far as Sony is concerned.

I don't frequent it all that often, but I'll drop in from time to time and it seems like there are always quite a few people roaming about.

7 Million people and the average stay is an hour...

Not too shabby.

I normally just go into Home when new a new game space or something is added, which isn't all that often in the EU version.

I'll start using it more when game launching is available in Home on the same day/week that game is actually released.

Home has so much potential that it hasn't got remotely close to realising and when it does, that will most likely be when I start to visit regularly.

I find myself going on Home quite rarely, mentioning bizarre comments and running off and 'Quincy'ing', I also walk around in character and just on the whole wind up people or amuse them with my constant personality changes.
Somehow I can use up 3 hours in just doing this. I'm sorry, I just find myself incapable of actually socialising this way and in fact, just socialising with strangers through computers.

If there's one thing Home has, its potential and I like potential.
