1UP sold to Hearst, EGM magazine closes?

What They Play writes: "Media business website paidcontent.org posted a story this morning with the headline "Ziff Davis sells 1UP digital network to Hearst, shutters EGM" but has since removed the piece from its website. The original content of the text is still visible using an RSS reader, and it stated:

Looking to conserve its resources for its PC Mag Digital business, Ziff Davis Media has sold off the 1UP Digital Network, its collection of video game sites, to Hearst Corp., which will fold it into the UGO Entertainment division, the companies said. In conjunction with the sale, the related print mag Electronic Gaming Monthly will publish its last issue this month. Terms of the deal were not disclosed."

I'm not a fan of 1UP, but I did like reading EGM magazine. Whenever the older Official Playstation magazine published it's last magazine issue in 2006, they recommended EGM, so I subscribed and it's the only reason why I did. For a pretty long while EGM was the only gaming magazine I read until Playstation The Official Magazine started it's first publication last year.

If EGM does close up shop, I guess I'll have to find other multi-console magazine to subscribe to and I will probably go with GameInformer.

I remember in the mid 90s just before the PS1 came out reading EGM for hours. Back then, the magazine was the size of a Sears catalog and there was SNES, Genesis, CDi, 3DO, Sega Saturn, Gameboy, SNK. The mag currently is so thin that it is a shell of what it once was. Sushi-X was great!

There was so much game content. I considered that the golden age of gaming.

EGM will be missed.

EGM since the first issue. Stopped somewhere in the late 90's. This was before it was in Ziff Davis hands or half the team that became editors and high staff. I'm talking when they were fans, and became writers. Truly a gaming icon. I grew up with the magazine. I still look through my old issues from time to time. I also have issues of Die Hard Game Fan, Gameplayers, Gamers Republic, Gamepro first issue. Man I wish the best for everyone there.

Poor EGM...it was always the superior game mag...rumors with Quatermann...Sushi-X...the fan art....the infamous "Sheng Long" SF2 April Fool's trick (that was for the ol' schoolers in here...)

Print everywhere is in danger thanks to the internet. Who wants to wait every month when u can get news and reviews everyday? I stopped reading a long time ago, but read a few issues recently actually, since my job has a subscription. The mag was still good, but didnt seem as fun as it used to...nor did I care for their review style all that much.

Either way EGM will be missed...I just feel like part of my childhood died...lol. Before the days of the internets, we would check the newsstands for that new issue...Im feelin old...and Im not even 30 yet!!!

21 - I was threatened by EGM.

Now I know why. EGM was upset that I didn't continue my subscription and claimed that I had an obligation to continue it. EGM threatened to "do something" about my negligence. I sent them 20 bucks to renew it, and I was going to call them and make it clear that I wanted to cancel.

EGM was always vulgar and crude. I'm glad to see them fail.
