Xbox 360's Party Chat is the Downfall of Gaming

Binge Gamer writes: "There was a time when I started my 360, jumped online, and messaged a friend to get out of Gears and pop in Halo. He would be greeted by the other people in our party ready to b.s. and kick ass while doing so. With the uprising of the Xbox Live Party Chat, those friends are leaving me with the choice of talking with them or trying to enjoy my game.

Initially I think that chatting with people who aren't playing the same game as me would be quite asinine, and it is, but I still found myself doing it up until recently, now I tend to deny party invites. Sure, it may seem like I'm being a dick, but when I throw in Call of Duty, that is what I want to play and be focused on. I have no doubts that there was some great events going on at school or work, but can't we discuss that as we throw grenades together?

This problem goes further than just pissing some people off on my friends list, it is now becoming an exploit of sorts in current games. ..."

Then why don't you delete them from your friends list? Are you one of those people that prides himself on having a massive list of friends that you don't know and never play online with?

I would say it's useless if your party isn't your team, but if you are playing single player, why not talk to your friends while playing? I don't think this was meant to take over for chat while playing multi-player I think it's supposed to compliment single player games.

party chat is a downfall cause it allows cheating. when you die in gears 2 or COD waw in search you shouldnt be able to speak with the teamates yet it happens and people in parties end up telling everyone where the enemies are . there is the unfair advantage.

Some games you are allowed to do it to begin with. Use it to your advantage and quit complaining. It does however control camping.

I hope you never play Search & Destroy in CoD then, because being able to tell your teammate where your opponent is totally kills the point of the mode.

It's a flaw of two opposing systems clashing. I think the NXE is a great idea, avatars aside, and I love how its integrated into the system. What needs to happen now is more developers need to take it into account when they develop the online components of their games. Yes, cheating happens. But we need to make it harder to do so. Things like Gear's map camera are great ideas to let people watch the action, this just makes it EASIER to exploit than before sadly. A balance is needed.

As for your phone comment... the simple answer is laziness. It's easier to press Right Trigger and tell your friend already in chat where the enemy is than to call him up on the phone. Of course, there are those people that will do ANYTHING to win. I laugh at them.

4 - What?
I'm not sure I entirely understand the problem at hand.

I'm in a party chat. If I die I can talk to my teammates. How does that give me an advantage? It's not like I can see the enemies, right? Or can I? If I remember cod4, I can only spectate on my own team. If I'm talking to my team, that doesn't seem like much of an advantage. If I'm talking to the enemy, then, sure, that's a distinct advantage. But only supreme dorks would do that...Seriously people.

Isn't this feature for cross game chatting? I don't see exactly how it affects people playing the same game.

Also, I don't see how this affects game invites, either.

Gears of War 2, you will then notice the ghost camera where after you die, you can move around the map and tell your teammate exactly where the enemy is. Pinpoint it.

5.1 - I 100% agree.
There's nothing at all wrong with the party chat. Bladestar is 100% correct. The reason you pay $50 bucks a year is for that voice chat. Given that that's the difference XBL users are paying for - how on earth could this guy have a problem with it? If he doesn't want cross game and party chat, just game on PSN , quit your moaning and it won't cost you a thing.

5.2 - It is an NXE flaw
because the game already existed and worked the way it was. By changing the setup after the product was released you can't then blame the product for the problem. That's a truly backwards way of looking at things.

I think the system sounds good if it can be implimented correctly with restrictions being able to be put in place to limit the cheating potential. Limiting the number of voices in your head can only be a good thing.

The Best thing about party chat is i havent heard the nigger word in weeks.

When playing Gears i could talk to my friends at all times in ranked and give them the heads up if i get killed. The other team can do it also so its fair. I dont have to listen to rude little kids anymore in lobbie or racist punks.

This guy is just fishing for something to talk about. If Ps3 and PC had it also i would be a great feature for all.

That he wants chatting to be availible while one person is in a game and another isn't. Because what if one of those people don't have Call of Duty? Chat while your in the game and while the other person is in a different game. But i do understand not being able to be in a chat and not be gaming at the same time, that's why i stopped chatting alot, i would just sit there and be bored. Goodluck to you (person who wrote this)

19 - party chat is weak sauce
i havent used it at all zero zilch nada .... just shows how rocking the new experience is and since im here ill give my thoughts ...
Menus are slow at times.,, love reading in xbox mag how the menus are so fast and fluid while mine freeze for 3-5 sec to switch between things...
Avatars are well its cool for about 3-5 min then its just a waste of time and money that is if you want to buy some avatar games or download a theme...
Is this really an upgrade?? still hard to find arcade games still hard to buy ms points took 3 days for me to find out how to turn start system with disc in tray since it apparently reset all my settings (u have to do it with your controller btw)
Party chat .... havent used it once ...

Curse halo for removing clans, clans where the best thing for gaming and they removed it from halo 3 because to many people were trying to get a piece of the pie in the sky and they just removed it all together gaming took 10 steps back when they did that ... ever since then i havent added any new people to my freinds list and i dont really run with anyone regular any more just not interesting enough with out joining clans or clan matches.. who ever gets this right will have the next hit on there hands .... STFU bungie for removing clans.. just throwing that in there .. taa..

23 - With the cheating aside its one of the best things of the NXE...
...at least for me and my friends, since we talk Spanish most of the time and most of them don't know to much English we used to talk and people started saying stuff mostly racial (speak, mexicans, bla, bla, bla) but now we can talk without annoying little kids going crazy because they only wanna hear English.

Since we live in Puerto Rico our country is USA and we play against americans most of the time but now we do have a kind of freedom we didn't had before.

I don't see what the big deal is. If he doesn't wanna talk to people in different games, he can simply just mute them or leave the party. No use in complaining over an N4G article.

It is no issue for me because I always play with friends.

You have to understand that anything Microsft does with the 360 and XBL is wrong, no matter what it is it's wrong. And once we realize that the guys who hate it will be triumpant and the XBox Division will cease to exist, and Sony will be the ONLY system will ever need and no other game company will need to exist because Sony will do everything perfectly and have the only features that people want. As soon as we realize that gaming will be as it shuold be, because Sony will tell us when it's time to innovate and what features it deems worthy of vbeing called innovative, and if you don't want to game with Sony then maybe we should get another hobby-right.

Shorthand for everything:

PSN is better than XBL-because it's free with less features but does EXACTLY the same thing-cuz Sony says so and I'm telling you how to spend your free time and money.

360 Sucks and their games suck and if you play on 360 you suck and ALL games should be on Sonys console because they are the only company that knows what we want because they tell us.

;-)

25.1 - Nice "sarc" rant...
And all too true at that!

Seriously, you would hope that anytime a gaming enhancement comes along all gamers would be appreciative regardless of which system the enhancemant appears on first. If it's truly worthwhile it's only a matter of time before similar versions will appear on competitors systems.

It's a plus for everyone.

27 - Party Chat is GREAT!
Seriously, Party Chat only enhances Xbox Live's awesome "invite to game" and "join game" features.

For example, I have a large group of gamers on my Friends List that enjoy playing Gears 2 with each other. I might start--or join--a session of Horde on Gears of War, after the game slots are filled, other gamers will often join our PARTY CHAT so they can be notified instantly when a member of the Gears-playing group has to leave for whatever reason, quickly allowing the next queued party-chat member join in the active game. It saves time looking for another gamer to fill the vacant slot.

Keep in mind that it works both ways in that it simply makes it easier for friends to join your game party or for you to join theirs. It also allows for easier planning of gaming sessions among a large group of friends in an efficient manner.

For me, the comraderie level is also enhanced with Party Chat. It's virtually the same atmospere as if I were in a sports bar with a large group of friends: some might be playing pool while others foosball; another might be working a pinball table while I can joke with the lot of them and hit on their girlfriends all at the same time. There's even beer! (Well at least for those in the party old enough--or clever enough--to have it!)

As far as ghost cams & dead spies are concerned: BOTH SIDES can do it! All the GAMERS I game with, ALL, are either mature enough to agree on set rules IF that's what WE AS A GROUP want----or they are quickly, quietly, booted from the party and game, placed on the ignore list---and--if they are particularly foul, reported.

The Party Chat system allows for so many new ways to interact and game while retaining all the tools already in place for filtering out unwanted gamers that all in all, it is a win-win situation for social gamers.

Un-social gamers, soloists who prefer to play by themselves, with themselves, still have the option to set their prefences to display "not online."

They can then turn off the lights, stick in their favorite game, grab a bag of cheetos and slap their joystick till their hearts content! (thus providing an additional interpretation to the phrase "cheese d*ck")

Social gamers who choose to play single player modes of a game need only answer party chat invites that they are, well, playing single player and need to concentrate. What true gamer would fail to understand? It's as simple as that.

Party Chat = Big, BIG, advance in online console gaming. Truth.
