Xbox 360's Party Chat is the Downfall of Gaming

Binge Gamer writes: "There was a time when I started my 360, jumped online, and messaged a friend to get out of Gears and pop in Halo. He would be greeted by the other people in our party ready to b.s. and kick ass while doing so. With the uprising of the Xbox Live Party Chat, those friends are leaving me with the choice of talking with them or trying to enjoy my game.

Initially I think that chatting with people who aren't playing the same game as me would be quite asinine, and it is, but I still found myself doing it up until recently, now I tend to deny party invites. Sure, it may seem like I'm being a dick, but when I throw in Call of Duty, that is what I want to play and be focused on. I have no doubts that there was some great events going on at school or work, but can't we discuss that as we throw grenades together?

This problem goes further than just pissing some people off on my friends list, it is now becoming an exploit of sorts in current games. ..."

Gears of War 2 has become a cheating haven. The game is not fun unless you are already in a party when you start playing.

Party Chat the downfall of gaming because this one guy pisses his friends list off? What the hell? I really feel like shoving my foot up this guys ass right now. What a douchebag.

1.4 - Partially agree
He has a valid point about people that have been killed being used as an alert system for their team makes. I think that is something that really should be fixed.

But the rest of the stuff is just whiny little "B!tchassness".

And it is NOT the "downfall of gaming". What a drama queen.

I guess this guy would have a heart attack if someone told him about ventrilo, skype, teamspeak etc. that has been used for ages in PC gaming.

Edit: I might add that people could easily use said programs on their PC with wireless headsets while playing console games.

Ventrilo and Teamspeak have always done the same thing on PC games with friends in ghost cams giving away info(as said above). These things don't really bother me anymore as an avid PC gamer. It's just spreading over to consoles now.

1.9 - Stupid!
I wonder if he knows he can still just invite people to a game without inviting them to a party chat!

Here's an idea... why don't you turn the volume down, and tell them your mic is broken! That way you don't have to listen.

1.10 - Some people just don't read the entire article.....
Though I agree with him about being in a party with people that are actually playing different games is annoying....but that's a personal opinion. I don't join parties that aren't playing the same game as I am. Personal preference.
Now, the other point he makes about cheating is a valid one. Those game modes that don't allow the dead to talk to the living, do so for a reason. It is cheating. It's using an exploit.
Using a phone to do the same thing doesn't compare. In party chat, everyone in the party can hear and it's instantaneous. You don't have to dial a number and only talk to one person.
I personally have made the choice to not play these certain types of game modes. My fix.
Also, the party chat feature hasn't fixed the 12 yr. old racist problems....unless you mute each and every single person not in your party, you can still hear everything said in the game lobby. Maybe there's a setting I haven't found to mute everyone not in party, but I thought that was a game specific feature and not an xbox live feature. Hopefully I'm wrong and I find it or someone clues me in to where I can find it.

Happy Gaming

1.12 - This guy's a retard...
"Hey, I hate having options! Please limit me to either a one-on-one chat, or be forced to listen to a bunch of ignorant, underage, whiney or racist strangers!" or...... not.

I'm extremely happy with the party chat option. It's awesome. I can play in 8 on 8 matches and talk with my 3 friends who are on my team without having to hear the jacka55 that decided that he would be clever by putting his mic near his home stereo and blaring gangster rap to the party.

Sure, I can mute that guy, but another one will just pop up and replace him, and since I only need to talk with people I know won't act like retards, it saves everyone a lot of trouble and headache.

2.5 - its true.. but seriously..
ppl were complaining oh ... ppla r too loud and use so much foul words on live.. now that these ppl are quiet what is the stress... ok now u miss the rubbish talk.. yes i agree having ur friend tell u where a frag is planned as a trap or where the other team mates are is abit of a recon" but shyt if that person is really gd he would still win regardless only if he has some good skill and i have won loads of matches with ppl like that...

I sometimes dont like talking too the other team coz is brings some serious f-words all over the place and its much peaceful not hearing them ... heck i always get positive feedback since this new feature coz i cant curse em since i dont hear em...

its a stupid article .. coz if this feature was not there ppl would complain so i think who ever wrote this should shut the hell up.. and go look for his friends to play a game with.

2.6 - Quieter is a good thing...
I for one love the new party system, but that's because of how I game. When I'm online, I'm almost always playing co-op or a small versus mode with friends of mine from around the country. This is how we socialize when we're all in different states. I'm a hardcore gamer, but when it comes to playing online, I'm much more casual - I'm there to have fun.

In regards to co-op, with Left 4 Dead in particular, party chat is a great way to still converse with your peeps even while the game's loading. A lot of co-op experiences experience loss of signal while loading: Halo, Gears, Rainbow, GRAW, L4D, etc. This way my cohorts and I don't have to suffer through the blackout.

And in regards to multiplayer, most of the time, I'd rather just hear my friends - the people I know aren't going to call me untoward names unnecessarily. Bottom line, I'm playing to have fun and socialize with my friends. Winning's a distant 3rd to those two. I know, I know. What a terrible attitude for me to have...

I agree. Sorry the author doesnt like to talk to his friends. I do, & now I dont have to listen to jerks or little kids to do so. Party chat is possibly the best feature of NXE. Lol, we are to busy laughing & have fun to use it as a "cheating tool". LMAO

Let me explain the article in simpler and shorter words for those that only read the tittle. -The guy is not whining because he's an anti-social person, he's angry because you can cheat in games using the Cross-game chat.

Example from the article: "When playing certain modes in CoD4 for instance, there are gametypes (Search & Destroy) where the dead could not converse with the living, and for good reasons. When you are dead in the game, you get to view the living teammates screens. A neat feature, nothing new to a lot of gamers, but the point is, you wouldn’t be able to alert others of that enemy disabling that bomb or etc.

Gears of War 2 takes it to a whole other level by having a ghost cam while you are dead. So while in a party chat, you can give specific directions on where the other team is. Where is the challenge and fun?"

9.1 - Great Clarification but do you blame the Game for allowing Ghost Mode or NXE?
What if all these guys knew each other enough and were using their cells phones to cheat in the same manner would you blame cellphones as well?

10 - When PSN gets chat
I know it will be the downfall of at least ONE game, SOCOM.

Just the other night, I was playing a clan of six, and only TWO people had mics. The only thing I can think is that they were all using skype, which is a major problem in this game. When you give people a method to cheat, there will be cheaters

13.2 - Glad to hear there's an alternative now.
I stopped playing on XBL over a year ago just after Halo 3 was released because I just couldn't take all the racist little kids. I'd consider going back to XBL now knowing that the party chat improves things, but I'm used to gaming on PSN now, and all my friends bought PS3's this last year so there's no sense in going back now. Saves me $50. Not huge, but 50 bucks is 50 bucks. I don't see any reason whatsoever to ever go back to XBL.

13.5 - I'm sorry, what on earth are you talking about?
@ Mitch_Cumstein. First off, no one was talking about Home. That's just the ole fanboy bait and switch. Can't win an argument? Just scream "Bu-but look over there!" and distract. Fanboys on both sides do it all the time, it's just funny when you see it in action.

Anyone that's tried the two services knows, and it's well documented in the gaming media, racist 12 year olds are a real problem on XBL. It's fine to say "But just play with your friends, or make friends and it'll be fine" but that doesn't actually address the issue. It just makes it so you don't have to deal with it. The funny thing is, on the PSN, I haven't had to go that route. Where I was muting 4-5 guys at the beginning of every single match of Halo 3, I have to mute some annoyance maybe once every 4-5 matches of COD on the PSN. Say it's overblown all you want - you certainly won't convince me because I've experienced it first hand and I'm sorry to say that my experience trumps you're assurances that it's not a problem.

Either way I feel that you protest too much. What I was saying was it's good that people on XBL have more options now, the party chat thing sounds like a great idea. If they had it a year ago I may not have canceled my XBL gold. Just because I don't bow to the almighty Microsoft doesn't mean I don't enjoy the hell outta my 360. Believe it or not, there's 360 owners out there that choose not to game online with their 360. Didn't mean to rock your world with that little factoid.

Here's another shock for you. Are you sitting down? Some gamers have both the PS3 and 360 ... AND PLAY BOTH! I know, crazy! It's like dogs sleeping with cats, but both consoles can coexist.

13.7 - Unfortunately
People saying screwed up sh!t has been a part of online gaming long before XBL and PSN. Some people are just looking to start sh!t. It sucks but basically you either need to grow a pair or get off the internet. Everyone on the internet is subject to being insulted. Idiocy is an equal opportunity employer. As an online gamer you have to be able to shrug it off and/or look as it as an invitation for some fun sh!t talk, when you're in the mood.
